Abstract

This  correlational  study investigates the  effect  of  study  abroad  of two  exchange  students (SA) from  Indonesia  in  public  schools  in the United  States  on  their  grammatical  accuracy as  compared  to the oral and written performance of two first year college students through  formal  instruction (FI) in  Indonesia  never  experiencing living  in  L2  environment.  Speech  samples  were  elicited  through interview via-Skype, while writing samples were obtained through writing task. The result of this study shows that in oral and written performance, SA participants used more accurate grammar than FI participants.  However,  SA  participants  were  more  accurate  in using  the  three  tenses  in  writing (90%) than  in  speaking  (87%), while FI participants showed different result, i.e. their grammatical accuracy of speaking (78%) was higher than that of writing (76%).Studi  korelasional  ini  meneliti  efek  studi  di  luar negeri  untuk dua siswa  Indonesia  program  pertukaran (SA) di  sekolah  negeri Amerika Serikat  dalam  hal  ketepatan  gramatikal  yang dibandingkan dengan ketrampilan lesan dan tulis mahasiswa tahun pertama  melalui  instruksi  formal  (FI) di  Indonesia  yang  belum pernah  tinggal  di  lingkungan  bahasa  kedua. Sampel  ketrampilan lesan dikumpulkan lewat wawancara via Skype, sedangkan sampel ketrampilan tulis  diperoleh  melalui  tugas  mengarang.

Abstract

The paper aims to explore the effectiveness of Semantic Field Theory in polysemy teaching by conducting action research. The objective is to cultivate students’ concept of metaphor and semantic fields in order to achieve systematic vocabulary retention on the one hand, and to prove that teaching vocabulary through Semantic Field Theory is more effective than traditional methods on the other hand. An experiment is given to sophomores in Asia University, with a pretest, in-class lesson, and posttest. The result shows that the students in the experimental group perform better in the posttest even though their performance in the pretest is worse, which furtherly proves that learning English polysemy through semantic fields is much more effective than traditional teaching methods.

Abstract

Translation can be defined as the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL). The term ‘textual’ means that the input for the translation process is ‘text’, rather than individual sentences. A text is a unit of language in use. It best regarded as a semantic unit, which is encoded in sentences. The encoding involves a planned activity that involves seven aspects (called ‘segi’ in this article). The aspects have been used to compare the original text or SL text (TSu) and its translated versions or TL texts (TSa). The findings indicate that the textual changes affect the identity of the text to some degree, in particular aspects of ‘informativity’ and ‘relevance’ embodied in the text identity.

Abstract

In the society, various studies suggest that the way men and women speak is different. Women are considered to be more polite than men and many assumptions arise to support this idea. By looking at that phenomenon, the reseacher attempts to establish evidences and verification about women’s linguistic behavior in which women are theoretically more polite than men are and to discover more information about the characteristics of men and women by investigating the linguistic features between men and women’s speech act, especially in speech act of complaining. The present study investigates the differences of complaining realizations between Indonesian EFL men and women learners. The subjects were selected from the English Department of the Indonesian University of Education, involving 20 advanced male and female students. Data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire in the form of a Discourse Completion Task and a semi-structured interview. The responses were analyzed based on Trosborg’s (1994) complaint strategies as the main analyzer and Rinnert and Nogami’s (2006) taxonomy of the speech act as a supporting device. The study reveals that there is a difference between men and women in proposing the complaining speech act. The findings revealed that men were the highest users of Direct Accusations while women used Indirect Accusations the most. This present study also found that the use of complaining strategies was more frequently employed by women than by men. Gender as the main focus of this research has been proven to have an influence on the choice of complaining strategies: how the gender of a complainer and a complainee plays a role in deciding the strategy of complaining act. This research has supported previous studies on the subject and contributed to the establishment of the knowledge structures of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, cross cultural understanding and English linguistics in general

Abstract

Studies concerning the use of a language in media have atracted many social scientists because the studies are considered multi-disclipine studies covering linguistics, social sciences, and a communication science. This study discusses the way media practitioners manipulate a language to represent a flood phenomenon using a critical discourse analysis approach. The data are utterances in a hard news text taken from Suara Merdeka, February, 5, 2014. Using three steps of analysis, those are description, interpretation, and explanation, I come to the finding that in representing the phenomenon, the media practitioners conducted complex discourse practices. The lexicogrammar used implies the social practice happening to the society.
