Abstract

It is desirable that education will result not only intelligence, but also noble character in students’ personality. This desire should first have its base on strong philosophical answer for the question of why, i.e. why must we educate at all. We then must examine deeply our vision of education which will determine the course of our educational method and action. Charlotte Mason provides us with the concept of magnanimity as the desirable end result of character education. This concept embraces holistic aspects of education: the academic, the practical, the philosophical, and the spiritual. High thinking balanced with lowly living, wide interests on different kinds of subjects, a lifelong-lasting desire to learn are her some criteria of that desirable end result. She insists that educators should hold grand vision and aim as highest as possible, not merely limited by materialistic or utilitarian scheme of success. Education then will become more than a system, but a method, i.e. a flexible attempts to achieve substantially clear educational goal. Keywords: magnanimity, education, Charlotte Mason

Abstract

Interjections are widely applied in Javanese dialect and they characterize particular functions, especially in spoken communication. However, with the growth of economic, urbanization, and associated area depopulation, dialect anomaly will lead to two ways: first, a community will be vulnerable as dynamic urbanization occurs; second, its linguistic characteristic will lead to “linguistic salad-bowl” as the result of “linguistic melting-pots”. Therefore, it is important to study dialects before they disappear in certain areas. In addition, there is relatively little research that has been done on Semarangan Javanese in the area of interjections, as supported by Jovanović (2004), who claims that “Interjections, as one of the marginal and perhaps least discussed upon classes of words”. Semarangan Javanese has some distinct characteristics in its spoken form, especially in its lexical divergence. Consequently, different interjections appear. This research aims to discuss Semarangan Javanese interjections, in terms of the sociopragmatic function applied by Semarangan Javanese speakers in a certain communication context. The researchers applied Jovanović’s interjections classification as the basis of this research. Field research method was used to gather the data by conducting direct observation to research participants. Semarangan Javanese interjections can be explored into three components, namely form, position, and meaning. Based on the findings, the form of Semarangan Javanese interjections are realized from phonological, morphological, and semantic occurrences. These interjections are also recognized in the initial, final, and independent positions. Such variety of meanings from the interjections can be indicated through several contexts that take place in the communication.

Abstract

The animality of man we can fairly grasp, but perplexities arise when we try to define the humanity of man. Contemporary, modern human knowledge tends to describe the essence of man as a kin of animal or a type of machine. Those descriptions elude the essential modes of man which are preciousness, uniqueness, opportunity, nonfinality, process and events, solitude and solidarity, reciprocity, and sanctity. Through further elaboration on the essence of humanity as a being between animality and divinity, in Heschel’s concept of man we may find a remedy to dehumanization as the contemporary human’s plight and problems, especially as it emerges in our country as violent cases against humanity.   Keywords: humanity, humanization, dehumanization, modern human, essential modes of man
