Abstract

Abstract Flood happened in most of Indonesian areas is basically because of the condition of nature and human conduct. As any other cities in Indonesia, Semarang is a city that never free from flood and it is getting worse and worse each year. Ten to sixteen sub-districts are flooded increasingly each year, among others Northern, Eastern and Western Semarang. Histotically, Semarang is never free from flood. Through forced labour, in 1850 and 1896 Dutch colonizer built two big cannals, called East Banjirkanal (Banjirkanal Timur) and West Banjirkanal (Banjirkanal Barat) anticipating flood in Northern Semarang that becomes business center in Semarang harbour. East Banjirkanal was built to anticipate flood in East Semarang and  the development area of Semarang harbour. Originally those cannals built to flow water from the upper part of Semarang (area of Semarang district on the foot of Ungaran hill). Flood problem should be handled  not only by structural method, such as building infrastructure, but also by non-structure method namely social and socio cultural aspects. To overcome flood in Semarang, wholy and integratedly starting from planning phase, execution, reconstruction, evaluation and revitalization should be carried out. In planning activities, synoptic comprehensive and transactive or social learning are applied. Synoptic comprehensive planning is  applied to study technical problems  and policies related to execute the technical execution. Administered synoptic comprehensive is comprehensively, inter-sectors and administration. Transactive or social learning is stressed on social participation related to awereness, objective and education related to culture that  nurture the environment maintenance. Abstract

This article discusses about philosophy of science according to Karl R. Popper and Thomas S. Kuhn. There are similarities and differences between their views about how progress and what function of science.Apparently both Popper and Kuhn agree that science does not proceed by induction. However Kuhn disagrees with the view that science progresses by falsifiability through conjectures and refutations, but occurance by paradigm shift. Popper and Kuhn’s disagreement amounted to a distinction between two functions within the practice of science, one of criticism (Popper) and one of puzzle solving (Kuhn).Science education implies the teaching and learning of science interesting and fruitful in one hand, and teachers should be role models to students in the other hand

Abstract

In this era, English is established as the world language of research and publication. This makes the English language significant for students and professionals. Tangkiengsirisin (2010, 1) states that text flow through a sequence of sentences is a main criterion for advanced writing. This research is aimed at finding out the flows of ideas of the English Arguments of Indonesian writers. This research applies topical, paradigmatic analysis. It involves identifying topics and sequences of topics/ ideas. After the topical analysis is done, the investigator contemplates the ideas development pattern of the entire essay. After analyzing fourteen English Arguments of Indonesian writers, it is found out that English Arguments of Indonesian writers are mostly developed linearly. It contradicts with Kaplan’s explanation (1966) that oriental groups express their ideas mostly in indirect ways. It means that at present Kaplan’s theory is partly valid. Even though the English Arguments of Indonesian writers are mostly developed linearly, it doesn’t mean that the teachers can ignore it in teaching Advanced Writing. Flow of ideas should become one of the materials of Advanced Writing to Indonesian learners, but it doesn’t need more teaching time allotment. Abstract

ABSTRACT In Ancient Greek, human being is termed Homo ludens, a game-player animal. In Wittgenstein’s perspective, politics may then be defined as a game which needs a language game as a means of communication. All political systems practiced throughout the world use language games, and the democratic system is the one most dependent to its language game. Through the game, political institutions gain vote and collect sympathy from the people. By practicing language game one persuades others in order to have same opinion or idea. Therefore, one should be careful and critical in weighing political statements, questioning what meanings lie behind them, within the democratic system.
