Abstract

This research explores the phenomenon of a Malay language shift in Duri City, Bengkalis Regency, within a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. This shift is driven not only by demographic changes, such as the large-scale migration of Minangkabau, Batak, and Javanese communities, but also by ideological dynamics embedded in the language itself. Once a symbol of Malay-Islamic culture and civilization, the Malay language has increasingly become associated with specific religious identities. This exclusivist framing led to resistance from non-Muslim groups. Using a qualitative-descriptive method and critical sociolinguistic approach, this study demonstrates that the Malay language has lost its inclusive communicative function. Instead, it has evolved into a symbolic marker that generates social boundaries and constructs identity. Drawing on theories of language ideology (Irvine & Gal, 2000) and linguistic capital (Bourdieu), this research finds that language choice in Duri’s public space is no longer merely pragmatic. It functions as a means of representing and symbolizing resistance to perceived cultural domination. This study recommends a reorientation of language ideology and the implementation of policies to revitalize the Malay language as a symbol of inclusive culture—one that transcends religious and ethnic divides.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the forms of indigenous knowledge embedded in Banyuwangi's traditional cuisine, as presented in Kompas TV culinary programs uploaded to YouTube. Using a qualitative approach and textual analysis of selected video content, the findings revealed that Banyuwangi cuisine contains various forms of local health-related knowledge. This includes the use of plants such as Marsilea crenata (water clover), guava leaves, Sesbania grandiflora (hummingbird tree flowers), and lemongrass, which have been scientifically proven to contain active compounds beneficial to health. Local communities also demonstrate expertise in food fermentation, such as tofu, soy-based sweet soy sauce, and nata de soya, as well as in the processing of coffee beans and leaves into health drinks. This study identifies the traditional use of wadung leaves and fruit as culinary spices, which, despite the lack of existing scientific studies, offers potential for further research in the health and chemistry fields. These findings highlight that indigenous knowledge not only preserves tradition and supports health but also contributes significantly to the creative economy. Banyuwangi's local gastronomy, when packaged in digital media content, has strong potential to become part of a sustainable and inclusive cultural and creative industry.

Abstract

Language change is a dynamic phenomenon that evolves along with societal development. One contributing factor is technological advancement, which facilitates interaction between communities and individuals with diverse linguistic backgrounds. This interaction can lead to new understandings within a language, ultimately driving language changes. One form of language change in Japanese is gairaigo, or loanwords from foreign languages adapted to suit speakers’ communicative needs. This study aimed to expand the discussion on the morphological forms of gairaigo, particularly in the context of daily life usage in digital media. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, using a video from the CrazyMagnet YouTube channel titled 「仲良し3姉妹がチート爆食い中になぜか動物の森迷い込んで癒されすぎてヤバい」 (Nakayoshi 3 shimai ga chiito baku kui naka ni nazeka Doubutsu no Mori mayoikonde iyasare sugite yabai) as the data source. The analysis identified 18 instances of gairaigo in the video. Three types of morphological processes were identified: compounding (4 cases), clipping (2 cases), and borrowing (12 cases). The results indicate that gairaigo in digital media functions not only as a lexical supplement, but also as a marker of linguistic style and cultural identity among Japanese youth. This study emphasizes the role of gairaigo in ongoing linguistic dynamics, particularly in relation to digital platforms, such as YouTube, which are integral to popular culture. While previous studies have often focused on thematic contexts, such as beauty or cuisines, the use of gairaigo in everyday contexts remains underexplored. This study seeks to address this gap by providing insights into the morphological characteristics of gairaigo in daily life content on YouTube

Abstract

Romanticism in social life has become a human instinct that is impossible to eliminate. The various expressions that humans express make life colorful. Just like the romanticism shown in the novel “Maa Laa Nabuuhu Bih” by Sandra Siraj makes the reader carried away with the story of the complexity of romanticism between the characters in it. This research aims to explain the forms of Russel Noyes' romanticism in the novel “Maa Laa Nabuuhu Bih” by Sandra Siraj. The method used was descriptive–qualitative. The primary data source was the novel “Maa Laa Nabuuhu Bih, ” by Sandra Siraj published by Daar Dawen in 2018, totaling 174 pages. Secondary data sources come from studies relevant to the discussion of this research. The data collection technique used reading and note-taking methods. The data were then analyzed by detecting, understanding, and revealing messages from several novel excerpts. The results of this study found 14 forms of Russel Noyes' romanticism: two return to nature, three melancholia, two sentimentalism, three exoticism, two primitivism, and two individualism. Based on these research results, it can be concluded that melancholy and sentimentalism often occur in social life. Melancholy is caused by longing and sentimentalism is a form of overflow of feelings to convince a partner. Similar to the stories and events described in the novel “Maa Laa Nabuuhu Bih’ by Sandra Siraj. The researcher hopes that this research will not only be useful for the academic world but also add insight into social life

Abstract

This article aims to examine the role of supporting characters in the novel Kafka on the Shore in shaping the identity of the main character, Kafka, which has not been actively discussed in previous studies. This article classifies some supporting characters into characters who were removed from the shaping of Kafka’s identity, along with the reasons why their roles had to be eliminated, and characters who contributed to Kafka’s growth process along with the roles they played. This article uses the concept of the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, developed by David Keirsey. Moreover, to explain the relationship between Kafka and his father, as well as the older woman he loves, Miss Saeki, this article uses concept from psychoanalytic theory, namely Oedipus Complex by Sigmund Freud and Object Relations by Melanie Klein. Character whose role was removed from Kafka’s identity shaping is Johnnie Walker, or Tamura, Kafka’s father. Characters who support Kafka’s identity shaping are Crow and Oshima as the Idealist, Nakata as the Guardian, Sakura as the Artisan, and Miss Saeki as the Rational. The removal of Johnnie Walker indicates the importance of compromise in facing the dilemma between Westernization and maintaining Japanese tradition. Westernization is inevitable to some extent. However, in describing his identity as a Japanese, novelist Haruki Murakami through Kafka shows his intention to look back into traditional Japanese beliefs rather than emphasizing Westernization as the primary concept

Abstract

This research aims to elaborate on the main character's resistance to conflict in the movie Ḥilm al-Zaytūn from the perspective of Georg Simmel's theory and to express the impact of that resistance on the circulation of conflict in movies. The data in this research were collected by watching a movie as the main material for data collection, listening to dialogue, character expressions, storylines, and note-taking elements related to the research objectives. The data were analyzed using data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The results show that the main character's resistance to various conflicts according to Georg Simmel contained in movie Ḥilm al-Zaytūn is calmness, nobility, firmness of attitude, and courage. According to Georg Simmel, the forms of conflict found in movies are intimate relationship, antagonistic, and importance conflicts. The impact of resistance toward intimate relationship conflict is a compromise between the individuals involved in the conflict. The impact of resistance toward antagonistic conflict is the recognition of the end of conflict by outsiders. The impact of resistance toward important conflict is the elimination of conflict bases and victory over the acceptance of defeat by outsiders. The social interaction between groups or individuals will become stronger through the resistance of groups or individuals toward conflict.

Abstract

Research related to the ethics of care in climate change and moral responsibility towards future generations aims to explore the role of ethics of care in climate change and moral responsibility towards future generations. The method used in this research is descriptively qualitative and was obtained through data collection from online news media and article reviews. The analysis in this study is descriptively interpretative. The study was carried out in three stages: reduction, data presentation, and verification. The results showed that the ethics of care play an important role in life and can be used as a guide for human behavior to respect and preserve nature, as nature has provided human life support. Humans and nature cannot be separated, so they are interrelated. Humans have a moral responsibility towards nature because they will impact the sustainability of human life. The current climate problem is a serious problem that needs to be solved immediately, namely by building awareness of the application of the ethics of care, as humans care for fellow humans as well as the universe. The phenomenon of climate change is rooted in human activities that are less wise in managing nature. Thus, human moral responsibility is not only carried out individually but also becomes a collective responsibility involving individuals, governments, companies, NGOs, and other groups involved in managing nature. Therefore, there needs to be conscious collaboration in managing nature because this awareness has an impact on the lives of future generations.

Abstract

Readers play a crucial role in interpreting literary works, as each individual brings their own background and knowledge to the construction of meaning. Online platforms such as Goodreads.com and Bookmeter.com provide a space for diverse responses in the literature. This study aims to analyze reader responses to the themes in Tenki no Ko by Makoto Shinkai through a qualitative descriptive approach within the framework of Reception Theory, particularly Hans Robert Jauss's Horizon of Expectations. Data were collected from reviews of 60 online readers. The findings indicate that readers' expectations regarding three main themes–identity and freedom, love and sacrifice, and the relationship between weather and humanity–were largely fulfilled. These results highlight the connection between readers’ personal experiences and the thematic structure of the novel, offering insights into contemporary literary reception in digital environments.

Abstract

This article examines how Gudang Garam Filter International advertisements construct myths of masculinity, power, and success using visual and narrative elements. Using Roland Barthes’s semiotic approach, which conceptualizes myth not as falsehood but as a culturally constructed narrative that gives ideological meaning to signs, this study analyzes symbols such as dark colors, luxury cars, formal clothing, and dominant activities that create the image of a strong and sophisticated man. The analysis shows that these elements build a narrative of a successful man who dominates his social environment despite contradicting government health warnings. Ethical implications are also discussed considering how such advertisements may create cognitive dissonance among consumers. Furthermore, although consumers are generally aware of the dangers of smoking, factors such as addiction, identity seeking among teenagers, and the tobacco industry's contribution to the national economy highlight the complexity of the issue. This study emphasizes the need for critical awareness in interpreting advertising narratives in broader social and public health realities.
