Abstract

Islamic Education in Indonesia has long been trapped in a dichotomy between religious sciences and secular sciences, coupled with a technocratic tendency that reduces its spiritual dimension and liberative Islamic values. This article presents a philosophical inquiry into the paradigm of transformative Islamic education, drawing on the thought of Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur). Employing a qualitative approach —comprising library research and interpretative philosophical analysis — this study elaborates on the ontological, epistemological, and axiological foundations of Gus Dur’s transformative education. The findings reveal that Gus Dur situates religious rationality as the epistemological basis that integrates reason, revelation, and historical experience. Education, in his perspective, is not merely the transmission of information but an emancipatory praxis that harmoniously cultivates intellectual, moral, and spiritual dimensions—leading to the formation of human beings who are humanistic, inclusive, and committed to social justice. This article further presents curricular, pedagogical, and policy implications for implementing a transformative model within the contexts of pesantren, madrasah, and Islamic higher education.

Abstract

This study delves into the complex relationship between natural and cultural elements in shaping the meanings of village names in Banyumas Regency. By using a qualitative approach that involves archival research and interviews with local residents, the research uncovers how these elements work together to maintain the region’s ecological and cultural identity. Through the analysis of the region's toponymy, the study identifies two main factors influencing village names: physical and non-physical nature. The physical nature includes geographical features such as hydrology, morphology, and biodiversity, while the non-physical nature encompasses intangible factors like climate and cultural heritage. The findings reveal that village names often mirror the local environment, historical events, and cultural stories, offering valuable insights into the community’s bond with their natural surroundings. This research adds to the understanding of how place names act as a repository of cultural and ecological knowledge, highlighting the significance of safeguarding the intangible heritage embedded within the toponymy of Banyumas Regency.

Abstract

The phenomenon of doom spending among adolescents has emerged as an emotional response to anxiety, social-digital pressures, and economic uncertainty, exacerbated by easy financial access and doomscrolling culture. This study aims to analyze how emotional, social, and digital processes shape doom spending behavior and to formulate preventive interventions to mitigate it. Utilizing Schachter–Singer’s two-factor theory of emotion and the concept of emotional regulation, this research employs a qualitative phenomenological method based on a literature study through thematic and conceptual analysis. The findings indicate that doom spending is a maladaptive coping mechanism where physiological stress from exposure to negative content is cognitively mislabeled, leading to shopping being perceived as an instant solution for dopamine release. Adolescents are the most vulnerable group due to immature self-control and external pressures such as FOMO, the YOLO norm, flexing culture, and social media algorithms. This behavior is characterized by impulsive purchases that often result in post-consumption regret. To address this phenomenon, strategic interventions are required, including emotional education through mindfulness techniques, enhanced digital financial literacy, and the reinforcement of spiritual values and simple living. By integrating emotional control and a clear distinction between needs and wants, adolescents can build stronger emotional resilience and healthier consumption patterns amidst the uncertainties of the digital era.

Abstract

The function of language in popular media such as web series is not only as a means of communication, but also as a representation of social, cultural, and inter-character realities. Losmen Bu Broto: The Series depicts the interaction between family members, employees, and guests in the contemporary Javanese society that is increasingly open to the influence of modernization. This study aims to find lexical variations in the speech of the characters of the series using a social dialectology approach. This type of research is qualitative with data in the form of dialogue excerpts containing lexical variations obtained from eight serial episodes, which are collected through observation and recording. Data analysis was carried out with the theory of language variation from Chaer and Agustina (2010) and the theory of social class from Wardhaugh and Fuller (2015). The results of the study found four categories of lexical variations, namely Javanese, professional and modern, slang and expressive, and greeting. These results show that in addition to being a means of communication between characters, the lexical variations in Losmen Bu Broto: The Series also function as a representation of social class and Javanese cultural dynamics in modern society.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to determine how women’s bodies are commodified through analysing the use of visual and verbal elements in the French Bio yoghurt advertisement. The analysis was conducted using Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s multimodal theory as well as Firouzeh Nahavandi’s theory of body commodification to examine how women’s bodies become commodities in the media context. Research data in the form of a video clip of advertisements was taken from the official website of Institut national de l’audiovisuel. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods. The results indicate two forms of  commodication of women’s bodies in Bio yoghurt advertisements, consisting of commodification of women bodies through sensuality and through youthful body. Women’s bodies as an important part of the marketing strategy for Bio yoghurt products. The combination of visual elements, such as the gestures and actions performed by the actors in the advertisement, eye contact, camera focus on certain parts, shooting techniques, lighting direction, colours, and verbal elements, such as narration, shows that women’s bodies are commodified to create appeal so that the audience is interested in watching the advertisement, which then leads them to buy and consume Bio yoghurt products. This finding confirms that women’s bodies are used as capitalist values, that sensual, happy, young and healthy bodies are bodies that can be shaped and maintained through product consumption.
