Abstract

Islamic Education in Indonesia has long been trapped in a dichotomy between religious sciences and secular sciences, coupled with a technocratic tendency that reduces its spiritual dimension and liberative Islamic values. This article presents a philosophical inquiry into the paradigm of transformative Islamic education, drawing on the thought of Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur). Employing a qualitative approach —comprising library research and interpretative philosophical analysis — this study elaborates on the ontological, epistemological, and axiological foundations of Gus Dur’s transformative education. The findings reveal that Gus Dur situates religious rationality as the epistemological basis that integrates reason, revelation, and historical experience. Education, in his perspective, is not merely the transmission of information but an emancipatory praxis that harmoniously cultivates intellectual, moral, and spiritual dimensions—leading to the formation of human beings who are humanistic, inclusive, and committed to social justice. This article further presents curricular, pedagogical, and policy implications for implementing a transformative model within the contexts of pesantren, madrasah, and Islamic higher education.

Abstract

This study delves into the complex relationship between natural and cultural elements in shaping the meanings of village names in Banyumas Regency. By using a qualitative approach that involves archival research and interviews with local residents, the research uncovers how these elements work together to maintain the region’s ecological and cultural identity. Through the analysis of the region's toponymy, the study identifies two main factors influencing village names: physical and non-physical nature. The physical nature includes geographical features such as hydrology, morphology, and biodiversity, while the non-physical nature encompasses intangible factors like climate and cultural heritage. The findings reveal that village names often mirror the local environment, historical events, and cultural stories, offering valuable insights into the community’s bond with their natural surroundings. This research adds to the understanding of how place names act as a repository of cultural and ecological knowledge, highlighting the significance of safeguarding the intangible heritage embedded within the toponymy of Banyumas Regency.

Abstract

The phenomenon of doom spending among adolescents has emerged as an emotional response to anxiety, social-digital pressures, and economic uncertainty, exacerbated by easy financial access and doomscrolling culture. This study aims to analyze how emotional, social, and digital processes shape doom spending behavior and to formulate preventive interventions to mitigate it. Utilizing Schachter–Singer’s two-factor theory of emotion and the concept of emotional regulation, this research employs a qualitative phenomenological method based on a literature study through thematic and conceptual analysis. The findings indicate that doom spending is a maladaptive coping mechanism where physiological stress from exposure to negative content is cognitively mislabeled, leading to shopping being perceived as an instant solution for dopamine release. Adolescents are the most vulnerable group due to immature self-control and external pressures such as FOMO, the YOLO norm, flexing culture, and social media algorithms. This behavior is characterized by impulsive purchases that often result in post-consumption regret. To address this phenomenon, strategic interventions are required, including emotional education through mindfulness techniques, enhanced digital financial literacy, and the reinforcement of spiritual values and simple living. By integrating emotional control and a clear distinction between needs and wants, adolescents can build stronger emotional resilience and healthier consumption patterns amidst the uncertainties of the digital era.

Abstract

The function of language in popular media such as web series is not only as a means of communication, but also as a representation of social, cultural, and inter-character realities. Losmen Bu Broto: The Series depicts the interaction between family members, employees, and guests in the contemporary Javanese society that is increasingly open to the influence of modernization. This study aims to find lexical variations in the speech of the characters of the series using a social dialectology approach. This type of research is qualitative with data in the form of dialogue excerpts containing lexical variations obtained from eight serial episodes, which are collected through observation and recording. Data analysis was carried out with the theory of language variation from Chaer and Agustina (2010) and the theory of social class from Wardhaugh and Fuller (2015). The results of the study found four categories of lexical variations, namely Javanese, professional and modern, slang and expressive, and greeting. These results show that in addition to being a means of communication between characters, the lexical variations in Losmen Bu Broto: The Series also function as a representation of social class and Javanese cultural dynamics in modern society.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to determine how women’s bodies are commodified through analysing the use of visual and verbal elements in the French Bio yoghurt advertisement. The analysis was conducted using Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s multimodal theory as well as Firouzeh Nahavandi’s theory of body commodification to examine how women’s bodies become commodities in the media context. Research data in the form of a video clip of advertisements was taken from the official website of Institut national de l’audiovisuel. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods. The results indicate two forms of  commodication of women’s bodies in Bio yoghurt advertisements, consisting of commodification of women bodies through sensuality and through youthful body. Women’s bodies as an important part of the marketing strategy for Bio yoghurt products. The combination of visual elements, such as the gestures and actions performed by the actors in the advertisement, eye contact, camera focus on certain parts, shooting techniques, lighting direction, colours, and verbal elements, such as narration, shows that women’s bodies are commodified to create appeal so that the audience is interested in watching the advertisement, which then leads them to buy and consume Bio yoghurt products. This finding confirms that women’s bodies are used as capitalist values, that sensual, happy, young and healthy bodies are bodies that can be shaped and maintained through product consumption.

Abstract

This article examines forms of resistance enacted by a disabled woman protagonist in Ichikawa Saō’s novel Hunchback (2023). The novel portrays a female character with congenital myopathy who lives in close relation to medical technology and institutional care. Employing a qualitative interpretive approach through close reading, this study draws on Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s feminist disability theory to analyze how the disabled body is represented and negotiated within structures of power. The findings reveal three major forms of resistance: (1) resistance against the desexualization of disabled bodies through the assertion of sexual desire and embodied experience; (2) resistance against the stigma of unproductivity through narrative production and authorship; and (3) resistance against the politics of staring through the strategic use of digital technology as a medium of subject formation. The study argues that disability in the novel is not merely portrayed as a biological condition, but as a socially constructed category that can be contested through narrative articulation. This research contributes to contemporary Japanese literary studies by centering disability as a primary analytical lens and by expanding discussions of women’s resistance within frameworks of ableism and normate femininity.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the bias of the Algerian media Tout Sur l'Algérie and the French media Le Figaro in framing the position of Nahel Merzouk, a black Algerian descendant who was killed by traffic police in Nanterre, France, in news articles published by both media outlets. Nahel was a minor at the time of the incident and was driving a vehicle with foreign license plates. Therefore, legally, Nahel was in a disadvantageous position. On the other hand, Nahel was of Algerian descent, which meant that he also belonged to a minority group in France. The media served as a conduit for shaping information about Nahel in order to gain public sympathy. This study was conducted using qualitative techniques, and the research data was analyzed using Entman's framing theory. With further analysis using Entman's elements, this study successfully dissected Nahel's position in the view of both media outlets. For Tout Sur l'Algérie, which tends to have a left-wing political view, defending Nahel Merzouk as a victim is an important aspect that needs to be highlighted. In its reporting, this media outlet also often protects Nahel's family, who are of Algerian descent, with straightforward diplomatic messages. Meanwhile, Le Figaro voiced more about defending the state and public order, which was discussed through Éric Ciotti's statements. The aspect of controlling the situation in France became the focus of the media's reporting. In other words, Le Figaro tended to have a right-wing political view in its reporting.

Abstract

This article examines how focalization employed to shape what and how events, perceptions, and private thoughts are disclosed to the narratee. The object of this study is Orbital by Samantha Harvey that surrounds the six astronauts living in the International Space Station. The analysis applies Mieke Bal’s focalization framework to selected passages, identifying focalizers, focalized objects, and shifts among external-bound, character-bound, and embedded focalization. The analysis also uses close reading focusing on how the narrator’s selective knowledge, through panoramic framing, direct address, and interruptions of personal thoughts creates interpretive gaps that require narratee participation. The study advances the argument that Orbital leveraging the narrator functioning not only as a storyteller but as a philosophically oriented, phenomenological focalizer who repeatedly reorients attention from the events depicted to the manner in which experience is given.  The findings indicate that external-bound focalization constructs shared horizons of perception, while character-bound focalization concentrates ethical urgency and interpretive uncertainty.  Embedded focalization further intensifies the text’s reflective structure by staging layered access. The conclusion of this studyis that focalization functions as the novel’s main philosophical approach sustaining inquiry rather than closure, and directing narratee toward the constitution of meaning across shifting perspectives. This study posits that focalization can be read as a phenomenologically inflected narrative practice. Keywords: focalization; narratology; phenomenology; Orbital; Samantha Harvey

Abstract

Pamali is often found in Javanese society, for example, pamali related to women sitting in front of doors. This expression is advice for women, but it also regulates women's lives. This article aims to examine the role of pamali in prohibiting women from sitting on doorsteps as an unwritten rule governing the domestic behavior of Javanese women. This study focuses on the symbolic meaning of this prohibition and the function of doorsteps as boundaries between women's private and public spaces. This study uses a literature review method, analyzing various relevant literature on pamali culture, the symbolism of doors in Javanese households, and the social values contained therein. The results of the discussion show that pamali functions as a form of persuasive social control, conveyed through advice and oral traditions passed down from generation to generation. The prohibition against women sitting in front of the door is not a meaningless prohibition, but rather reflects the Javanese cultural perception of women as guardians of family honor and modesty. In the Javanese cultural context, doors have symbolic meaning not only as physical entrances and exits, but also as social boundaries that separate the world of men (public space) from the world of women (private space). As a result, this pamali serves as a means of moral education that reinforces the position of women in the social and cultural structure. Although some people have begun to view this pamali as merely a traditional legacy, it functions not only as an unwritten rule but also as a reflection of the social system and views of Javanese society, which prioritizes harmony, ethics, and balance in communal life.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the phonological development of Banyumasan Javanese in children aged 6–8 years through exposure to the traditional performance Wayang Bebek Banyumas. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a psycholinguistic approach. The subjects were 5 first-grade students of SD Muhammadiyah Cipete. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and audio-video recordings of children’s pronunciations of Banyumasan Javanese vocabulary before and after watching the Wayang Bebek Banyumas performance entitled Balapan Renang. The data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model by comparing phonetic transcriptions across the two conditions. The results show a clear improvement in children’s phonological abilities after the performance, indicated by increased accuracy and consistency in pronunciation, particularly in producing Banyumasan-specific sounds such as vowels, nasal consonants, and glottal stops. Children also demonstrated better imitation of onomatopoeic sounds relevant to the cultural context. These findings suggest that Wayang Bebek Banyumas serves as an effective linguistic stimulus that supports children’s phonological development while contributing to the preservation of Banyumasan Javanese as a regional language.
