Abstract

This research aims to find out personality and describe the hierarchy of human needs in Pippa Midgley as a minor character in the novel The Silkworm (2018) by Robert Galbraith. This research is a qualitative content analysis because the data obtained in this study is descriptive data collected from a novel. For the data collection, the writer determined the type of data, took notes, and managed the data. The writer used the theory of the Big Five model by McCrae & Costa (1992) to find out the personality of Pippa Midgley. Further, the writer used the idea of the hierarchy of human needs by Maslow (1943) to describe Pippa Midgley’s needs. Before describing Pippa Midgley’s needs, the writer analyzed the personality traits of Pippa Midgley based on the category. This research showed that Pippa Midgley has a high personality of neuroticism, which consists of anxiety, vulnerability, and angry hostility. After that, the writer found out that the needs of Pippa Midgley follow the hierarchy of needs by Maslow which are psychology, safety, belongingness and love, esteem, and self-actualization needs. In addition, the high level of neuroticism in Pippa Midgley made her experienced obstacle in fulfilling the needs of self-actualization. This was because Pippa Midgley's neuroticism personality made her vulnerable, so she could not appreciate her potential.

Abstract

This paper deals with Ahmad Tohari’s English-translated novel entitled The Red Bekisar. The focus is on the effects of the changing locus on the female protagonist’s hybridity. To support the analysis, several concepts are used, namely, the concepts of hybridity, mimicry, and cultural identity in postcolonial literature. Using feminist literary criticism as the frame of analysis, the general research method used is qualitative research, supported by library research. For the literary analysis, the contextual research method is applied, in which, by considering the character, conflict, and setting, the focus is on the female protagonist’s hybridity and how her hybridity is regarded by people from different loci. The results show that the female character, Lasi, has a different life because of her Javanese-Japanese mixed blood. In the remote village of Karangsoga, her hybridity is scorned, but in the big city of Jakarta, her hybridity is highly appreciated. However, she is treated like an object, a valuable doll that can be transferred to different owners. Her resistance indicates that her agency as a human being emerges when she is cornered.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the youth releasing their feelings to receive a sense of comfort by listening to sad songs cannot be separated from the rising mental health issue, which is in accordance with the increasing amount of sad songs produced by the music industry. Taylor Swift's songs are popular among the youth, especially Indonesian college students who are going through profound and complex emotional journeys relating to identity crises, love, and other unpleasant events, because the lyrics, the melody, and the story present the youth’s experiences. The popularity of Swift's songs among young people is intriguing to study through a psychological lens. Indonesian college students listen to Taylor Swift’s Anti-Hero as an unconscious response to avoid a feeling that they are unable to handle because the song is characterized by its haunting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. This study aims to examine defense mechanisms in Taylor Swift’s selected song, Anti-Hero, with Indonesian college students. The quantitative-descriptive method is used in this research to assist in describing, showing, or summarizing data constructively, referring to a statistical diagram. This method is used to understand the details of the data by summarizing and finding patterns in certain data samples so that the basic characteristics of the data can be understood and more accurate conclusions can be drawn about the phenomenon being observed.  The results obtained are defense mechanisms identified in the response of the targeted respondent, an Indonesian college student, which are repression, denial, displacement, projection, sublimation, and avoidance. As the expression of feeling and emotion, anti-heroism is a form of personal defense based on unconscious acts.

Abstract

This study discusses kakujoshi ni, de, e, and o as markers of location in Japanese sentences. How does the semantic difference of the particle as a locative marker, whether the particles can replace each other in their use, and what is the meaning of the sentence if there is a dropping of the locative marker case particles. This research uses descriptive-qualitative methodology and a note-taking technique. The conclusion from this research is that although the particles ni, de, e, and o are locative markers in sentences, their meaning is different. The particle ni is marker of existence, purpose, and direction, and the verbs that follow are henka doushi and joutai doushi. “De” particle as a locative marker for the activities carried out, mostly followed by dousa doushi. The particle “e” is a marker of purpose and direction and is followed by henka doushi. Particle “o” as a marker of starting point and place that is passed and followed by henka doushi and dousa doushi. There are some particles that substitute one another, such as “ni” and "e,” if they have a meaning of direction or purpose. There are “ni” and “de” particles that can substitute each other depending on the context; some cannot substitute because they have different meanings. “Ni” and “o” particles can substitute each other, but the meaning that will appear is different, and the sentence afterwards will be different. “De” and “o” particles can substitute for one another if all activities are carried out there. Particles of cases that experience direction and purpose often experience impregnation. In addition, locative marker cases, which have the meaning of existence, can be eliminated, but there is a sign ", (comma)" instead of particles of the case. Particles of starting point markers can also be obscured because the meaning of the whole sentence can be known from the meanings of nouns and verbs that contain the case particles.
