Abstract

This research was a study which attempted to explain how effective the use of Instagram in improving students’ skill of writing procedure texts is, and to explain the factors that make Instagram improves students’ skill of writing procedure texts. This study used quasi-experimental. The subjects of the study were the 53 batch students of 4th semester of Technical Department of Politeknik Bumi Akpelni. There were two groups in this study, TB as the control group and TC as the experimental group, in each group there was 24 students. The control group was taught by using conventional method, while the experimental group was taught by using Instagram as a medium. The resultanalysis of the quantitative data shows that the mean scores of the experimental group increases from 64.13 to 82.45. The result indicates that the working hypothesis is accepted. It means that the there is significant difference between students who were taught by using Instagram and those who were taught by using conventional method. In addition, the analysis of the questionnaire shows that 51.61% of the students agree that the implementation of Instagram assists their writing. Therefore, the analysis reveals that Instagram is effective in teaching writing procedure text.

Abstract

As future teachers they need some methods to help learners to improve and increase their vocabulary. Besides currently future teachers will face 21st century learners. It deals with today we live in modern era. Through using of technology it could help learners on learning process. This paper studies on future teachers’ perception in order to use technology in learning process. The technology that will use is word of the day on dictionary.com application. By using the methodlearners will get new words every day.

Abstract

Teaching English has its own challenges, especially teaching collage students who lack enthusiasm in learning English Subject.  Short responses show that they have less attention and do not really interest on the material. Another reason are because English is not their mother tongue but an international language which is not commonly used in their daily conversations. Teaching students with a variety of backgrounds understanding in English will make lecturer have to struggle so that the material can be immediately understood. The various problems  arise during  teaching and learning process including the material itself, the way lecturers teaching in class, teaching methodology, lack of motivation, fear to speak English and  feeling bored with the textbook. To overcome the arising problems that appear in  teaching and learning process some inovation must be carried out considering the technological sophistication has been so rapid. Animated video  were chosen in teaching speaking subjects on the topic “job interview“. The implementation of the study was carried out by an experimental method involving 4 classes, 2 classes as an experimental class and 2 other classes as a control class. Implementation is conducted for one semester. The results obtained that 85% of students are very interested in the material presented, do not feel bored and monotonous, the class is more interactive because it does not seem awkwardly. The results of the tests  included the acquisition of vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and pronunciation. So it can be concluded that the class is more interactive and has improved after it has been applied using Animated Video.

Abstract

The research studied a teaching and learning process on assessment of  courses in curriculum 2013. An assessment is a process intended to figure out whether the process and the results of an activity program have been consistent with the predetermined goals or criteria. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehend how the transformation or change of assessment in 21st Century learning actually is. This assessment is done in an integrated manner with the teaching and learning process continuously. Here, the competence consists of three competence domains, namely (1) affect (attitude which deals with emotion), (2) psychomotor (having something to do with physical movement and use motor skill), and (3) cognitive domains (related to knowledge and intellectual ability development). The achivement of national education quality never be separated from the 8 national education standards, that are (1) standard of competence, (2) standard of content, (3) standar d of process, (4) standard of educator and education staff, (5) stnandard of facility and infrastructure, (6) management, (7) financing, and (8) educational assessment. The results showed that a teacher or educator should have ideally standar of teaching and learning process and aware to the teaching and learning goals.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the EFL teachers’ beliefs about teaching writing and their practices in Vocational School and to reveal problems and solutions in teaching writing. The research design used a case study. The subjects were four writing teachers who have been teaching in Vocational School. The data collecting technique used semi-structured interview, observation, and document analysis. Then, the data were analyzed using Flow Model Analysis. To ensure the credibility of data, it used data triangulation and methodological triangulation. The findings showed that the EFL teachers had positive beliefs which covered the nature of teaching writing and its objectives, teachers’ roles, teaching approaches, and writing assessment. There was a relationship between teachers’ belief and practices in teaching writing. The teachers also concerned about the problems: vocabulary, language use, organization, and students’ motivation in teaching writing.

Abstract

Learning English using song is one of fun way that has been replaced into the school syllabus at Junior High School and Senior High School for 2013 curriculum. This study aimed to approach and reinforce grammar using song of Maher Zain in title Number One for Me by analysing the terms of grammar from its lyric. The focus of this study is about grammar which include: present tense, past tense, future tense, phrasal verb, noun phrase, gerund and the grammatical errors. Engaging lessons with model song will motivate students to learn grammar interestingly. The researcher conclude, if the terms of grammar in Maher Zain’s song has different kind and it is interesting to be learn. His songs always contain deep advices and this song tells about the love of mothers to their children and the children feel to their mothers.

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to investigate the influences of informal digital learning of English (IDLE) speaking practices which emerge the boundaries between countries. The researcher used questionnaire, interview, document analysis, and observation as data collection. For analyzing qualitative data, the researcher used narrative inquiry model including data collection, data transcription and reporting the narrative study. The participant were two female undergraduate students of English department in Indonesia. The result explained that IDLE speaking practices influence their self-confidence, motivation, and communication competence. This research also reveald that their language learning strategy through IDLE speaking practice widen their social and culture understanding. This new language learning strategy in informal context helps digital natives in this era to enjoy their learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to (1) find out how the availability of the internet application in schools as resource of learning. (2) The effect of internet availability on students' independence learning in English lesson. The population in this study were eighth grade students of SMP N 9 Yogyakarta in 2019 as many as 36 students. Samples were taken with saturated techniques. This study used quantitative method with ex post facto research types. Data collection was carried out by interview techniques and questionnaires as data on the availability of the internet in schools as learning resources and the impact of the availability of the internet on students' independence learning in English lesson. Analysis of the data used Likert scale or called scale five. The results of this study indicate that: (1) the availability of the internet at school as a learning resource is good enough in its use and management. (2) There is a positive impact on the availability of the internet in the school as a learning resource for students' independence learning in English lesson.

Abstract

21st century skills necessitate the abilities that students’ need for their career development in the current era. The utilization of Mobile Application in teaching and learning process as the integration of Information and Communication Technology in 21st century learning demands the teacher to get used of it. Hence, this study aims to investigate teacher’s belief on integrating Mobile Application in EFL classroom. To reach the objective, a case study on an individual teacher used in this research. The participant was purposively selected because she was considered as the informant who could give sufficient information to answer the research questions. The finding of this study was teacher believes that utilizing Mobile Application is very important as Mobile Application has ability to make transformation of educational aspects by making use of it to reach instructional objectives then the quality of teaching and learning will improve.

Abstract

Learning a language is not only about learning its language aspects and four Language skills but also about its culture. A new language cannot be achieved entirely unless the students have achieved the cultural context of that language. This articles discusses; relation of language and culture, culture in foreign language teaching, language teaching methods view on culture, applying culture in EFL/ESL classroom. Introducing culture is suggested to foreign language learners focusing more on communicative ability with the target language. Language and culture are closely related. Most of language teaching methods view that language and culture are inseparable. Introducing culture has an important role in EFL/ESL. It can reduce misunderstanding, culture shock, and stereotype. Cultural teaching must be integrated with four language skills in language learning. Cultural materials that are good in language learning are authentic text such as literature, newspapers, film, vlogging, table manner practice, proverbs, folklore and the native speakers.
