Abstract

This article discusses about the accuracy and readability on the translations of onomatopoeia in The Maze Runner novel translated by Yunita Candra in order to evaluate the translation quality. All onomatopoeia both from English or translated novel were collected and then looked for the meaning in Cambridge Dictionary, Oxford Dictionary, Indonesian Dictionary ( KBBI), and in some sources such as books, internet, or cross checking from native or experts, then compared and determined the accuracy and readability level using Translation Accuracy Assessment Instrument and Translation Readability Assessment Instrument [1]. The result showed that accuracy and readability related to each other. Onomatopoeia translated accurately tended to have low readability level and there were onomatopoeia intentionally translated inaccurately to obtain high readability level. Nevertheless, there were also the translations of onomatopoeia with high accuracy level and readability level.

Abstract

Religious terms are the terms and expressions whose source is obtained anddominated by the book of one religion or more. This research aims at exploring the religious terms and expressions found in the book of "Islam: A Short History", their types, meanings, and examples of religious term and expression. This article is qualitative research in which the researcher explains the types and examples of the religious terms found in the book. There are 14 religious terms (10 from Newmark, 1 from Alghamdy, and 3 from Yulianita) that have been found in previous studies, but those (14) above have not covered all the religious terms in the book. After researching the book of Islam: A Short History, the researcher found 1 (one) new term needed to be included in order to accommodate all religious expressions, so it’s 15 after all. This 1 new religious term (owner of the religion) is the split from the previous term (supernatural being). It is separated because of the mismatch between the type and example. Moreover, after the research, religious terms are classified into two, namely Arabic and non-Arabic. They are classified based on how much impact of the Arabic gives to the religious term.

Abstract

In this era globalization era, translation is one of inevitable activities. As time goes by, visual verbal translation began to be in demand. One form of visual verbal translation is the translation of subtitle. It cannot be denied that the translation of subtitle sometimes resulted distorted products. It caused by the complicated differences in bridging the source language (SL) and target language (TL). This paper aims to examine the strategy used and the pragmatics equivalence of the subtitle in Netflix's TV series site entitled "13 Reasons Why".  The data obtained is focused on the negative face acts threatening uttered by the characters. The method used is descriptive comparative. The research shows that the strategies implemented by translator are in the high rate of pragmatic equivalence which lead the translation considered successful.

Abstract

Translation is a process of transfering the meaning from the source text into the target text reader. The translator competencies in source language and target language are needed in order to reproduce the closest equivalence in target text.  This study aimed to determine interference in students’ Indonesian-English translation result. The study raised the question: How Indonesian, as the students’ first language,  interferenced their translation in  English when translating texts from Indonesian into English? To answer the question, the researchers analyzed students' mistakes in their Indonesian-English translation products. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method.  The data source was 18 documents of students’ Indonesian–English translation results. The finding showed that the problems arised from interference was the diference of syntactical construction of Indonesian and English. The results showed that interference occurred because of students' lack of knowledge and awareness of the source and target languages.

Abstract

This study discusses the important role and what are influences the overall reading ability of Indonesian students and their effect on electability competencies that impact PISA reading index, especially in the ability of reading English texts. Indonesian students generally only have a cumulative literacy index of 397 in 2015 which rose only one point from the cumulative literacy index in 2012 which is still relatively low among countries that follow the PISA assessment. This reflects the electability of students literacy who have not reached expectations yet. The literacy skills of Indonesian students in English with the relationship to the PISA index isinfluenced by several factors such as the state of reading, level of reading interest, intelligence or intellectual ability, social background, economic and reader culture, reading abilities and habits and ability to absorb new reading. These factors creates continuity in the important role of building electability literacy, namely to create an objective culture, critical and open mind comprehensively in its application in various realms of activity. Knowing that anything which affects literacy skills also needs to be considered that impedes literacy skills such as no language and code similarity between the writer and reader, communication failure, disruption to speech tools, the system of educational institutions that lack sufficient opportunities for reading traditions and socio-economic factors. And nowadays when the 'borderless world' paradigm globalizes society, there must be language alignment tools in literacy, namely English, so thatthe ability of English language literacy should be obeyed, especially students to understand the importance of English electability in positioning Indonesian students to compete with other countries in literacy skills.

Abstract

This article investigates the existence of Wattpad as a cyber-platform to produce literary works through socio-cultural paradigm. By adopting Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework, the discussion is intended to further elaborate whether such a story-sharing website – firstly launched in 2006 – has some typical natures as the field of literary production. The objective of this study is to explore how currently the influence of technological reformation is toward the practice of literary production. Eventually, from the exploration conducted to Wattpad, it is found that there are some typical characteristics that bring consideration to see it as a field of literary production. However, those characteristics must be seen contextually for it is conditioned in cyber space, yet the logic of conventional practice is carried over into it.

Abstract

By means of the innovations in Information and Communication Technology, people are able to rapidly learn and transfer information.. Keeping up with those innovations, the integration of ICT in education is the demand of time at present as ICT is being used in many other sectors all over the world. It urges the teachers to be skillful in operating ICT during their teaching.  However, there are some barriers for the teachers that prevent them to use ICT in the classroom. This paper is intended to explore the challenges of English teachers in integrating ICT into their teaching. To gain an in-depth result, this case study focuses on the interview of some English teachers in a certain school in Surakarta. The analysis of the data revealed that the barriers of English teachers in integrating ICT are lack of: ICT integration training, competence, equipment, and appropriate software and materials.

Abstract

Teaching English literature through drama makes students aware that “English is not just words, structures and idioms, but it is a lively, dramatic and versatile means of communication (Case and Wilson, 2003: 4). Learning English Literature by only reading and comprehending the content can causes boredom for most learners. Based on this situation , dialogue or drama performances has been a favourite technique or an alternative way in teaching English Literature. The dialogues of drama are selected from the plays of well known author or the students create their own plays based on the form of drama. For examples; Pantomime, Costume Drama, Melodrama and Comedy. The objectives of the study are to desribe the implementation of drama and dramatic activities in English Literature teaching, and to find out the students’opinion on the implementation of drama as a technique to teach English Literature. The study employs descriptive qualitative method by which data were collected through academic literature review, document analysis, observation, and questionnaire. From the study it is found that drama was the best alternative to facilitate learner to experience autonomous learning and give students more opportunity to learn Literature and perform their ability in front of the audience.

Abstract

Nowadays translators are challenged not only to be able conveying the message from source language (SL) totarget language (TL) but also they are demanded to bridge cultural differences through language. That is why translator needs to choose the best diction in order to maintain meaning and expression from SL to TL without forgetting the aesthetic. Losing the meaning of word due to the translators lack ability might give bad impression. In Asian context, English is a foreign language, so translating English to TL is totally difficult. Using song lyrics as one of translating strategy, especially to deal with figurative language could be one of the alternative way in maintaining the meaning and expression in translation. Students face song lyrics in their daily life so they are learning while having fun.This study is about using song lyrics to help students understanding in translating figurative language from SL to TL, and to help them grasp the meaning from figurative language with their own cultural background. Using song lyrics for translating figurative language as the base reference also help them to be more sensitive about the meaning and improve their analysing skill because figurative language consists of many types of word which their meanings are different with the literal interpretation. Moreover, translating in the 21st century needs great innovation to face the challenges in learning English as a foreign language.

Abstract

This paper explores teachers’ beliefs in English teaching for young learners based on International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programe (IB PYP) and examines the interplay their beliefs on instructional practices. The researchers utilize a qualitative method and case study as a research design. Three English teachers at elementary school that implementing IB PYP in Surakarta participated in the study. Data is drawn from semi-structured interviews, observation and document analysis. For analyzing data, the researchers use an interactive model by Miles and Hubberman. The finding data indicates that most of teachers beliefs consistence with their instructional practices namely beliefs on learning objective, syllabus, classroom methods, instructional material and sources, media and assessment even thought the researcher find discrepancies namely teachers’ beliefs on lesson plan and classroom procedure.
