This paper explores teachers’ beliefs in English teaching for young learners based on International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programe (IB PYP) and examines the interplay their beliefs on instructional practices. The researchers utilize a qualitative method and case study as a research design. Three English teachers at elementary school that implementing IB PYP in Surakarta participated in the study. Data is drawn from semi-structured interviews, observation and document analysis. For analyzing data, the researchers use an interactive model by Miles and Hubberman. The finding data indicates that most of teachers beliefs consistence with their instructional practices namely beliefs on learning objective, syllabus, classroom methods, instructional material and sources, media and assessment even thought the researcher find discrepancies namely teachers’ beliefs on lesson plan and classroom procedure. Choosing good methods or techniques in teaching English is paramount for a language teacher. He/she has to exert efforts to make his/her students enjoy their class and motivated to learn the delivered material. To do so, Content-Based Instruction (CBI) can be one of the techniques to teach English as a foreign language. With its strengths, hopefully, this technique can raise the students’ motivation in learning English. However, the instructor needs to make the environment of learning conducive so that the students feel secured and motivated to learn the target language. To some degree, Content-Based Instruction may give a room to the instructor to create such a conducive environment. This paper deals with the use of CBI to raise the motivation of Animation Design Study Program students at Yogyakarta Polytechnic of Arts. It will be concerned with the steps of delivering the material, the problems and ways out of applying the technique, the atmosphere when the process of learning was going on, and the impression of the students toward the application of the technique. In a nutshell, CBI could be used as an alternative to raise the students’ motivation in learning English because motivation plays an important role in learning the target language.

This research is aimed to get a detailed description and analysis about the representation of lexical cohesion in the background of research in undergraduate thesis from English Language Education students at Madako University. The researchers employed quantitative model to analyze the frequency and percentage of lexical cohesion which is used by the students in their writing. The data in this research were obtained from English Language Education undergraduate thesis of students at Madako University. The data collection which is used by the researchers is note taking. The data of this research were analyzed by using categorization of cohesion namely lexical cohesion. The result of this research indicates that the repetition component becomes the most dominant from the three components; the percentage of repetition is 93%, followed by synonym, collocation and superordinate with their percentage 4%, 2%, and 1% respectively.

The main goal of this study was to investigate about lecturer’s role in teaching speaking for enhancing students’ communication ability. The researcher employed descriptive quantitative method which was to know the students’ perception on lecturers’ roles to achieve students’ communication ability. Then, the researcher chose three lecturers of speaking subject to know about students’ perception on lecturers’ roles in enhancing EFL learners’ communication ability as the purpose of teaching speaking skill. The result shows that the majority of students’ perception was in positive category when the lecturers play the various roles in assisting students to improve their communication ability. However, Lecturer “A” still need to be more maximize his role as need analyst and Lecturer “B” also need to consider his role as manager in teaching speaking, because both of lecturers got neutral perception. Thus, the lecturers’ role is crucial for improving students’ communication ability.

An abstract has important role in summarizing and promoting its research article. Because of the important role, abstracts contain discourse patterns that have communicative purposes. This study aims at investigating discourse patterns and its linguistic characteristics of applied linguistics article abstracts in English. The research corpus consisted of 30 research article abstracts in English written by English native speakers and published in Applied Linguistics journal and Journal of English for Academic Purposes in 2016-2018. The data were analyzed by using five-move abstract pattern proposed by Pho (2013). The results showed that the common patterns of the abstracts were the patterns which contained five moves and four moves. Furthermore, the abstracts tended to use present tense and active voice. It can be concluded the results provide new findings among study of discourse patterns of English research article abstracts written by English native speakers, especially in applied linguistics.

Hedging devices are often used to express opinion rather than a fact of a proposition. Hedging devices are also expressing speaker uncertainty. What will happen when hedging devices are translated into the target language? Based on that question writer try to find out on how hedging devices are translated into target language using modulation technique. By using modulation technique, translator tries to understand the meaning of the hedging devices with different point of view. This study used qualitative methods in analyzing the data. The source data of this study is a novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, entitled Sherlock Holmes and its translation. Hedging devices found in this study were 96 data. Those data were translated using modulation technique. 96 data were divided into four such as, adaptors 66 data, rounders 6 data, plausibility shields 17 data and attribution shields 7 data. By using modulation technique translator translate those hedging devices with different hedging devices in the target language, but the function of the hedging devices are similar with the hedging devices of the source language.

This paper will discuss about compound verbs (V + V) that have perfective aspect meaning. The compound verbs are ~ owaru, ~ oeru, and ~ yamu. The compound verbs will be attached to other verbs which are located in front of it. The aim of this paper is to find out the types of verb that are attached to the compound verbs that have the aspect meaning. Thus, it can be seen the types of verb, do the types include activity, retinal, static, or stative verb. From the structure, it can be seen the differences in the use of the three verbs, and whether they can replace each other. Based on the results and data analysis, it can be concluded that owaru and oeru can be attached to activity verb and those can replace each other. Whereas, yamu verb is only attached to static and negative verb which are natural phenomenon and human emotional verb that cannot replace owaru and oeru verb in a sentence because those are not acceptable.

This articel is written to explain the indicator in determining the quality of a translation. Translation cannot be separated from culture; therefore, a translator must have sufficient knowledge about the culture of the language that is going to be translated. This knowledge will help the translator to determine the most suitable equivalent of any text containing cultural elements. Euphemism is one of the texts. Euphemism is used to replace an expression that considered threatening the face of the speaker, the audience or some third party when it is uttered. Sex is the topic that will offend people when it is talked about openly. People in every culture tend to use euphemism when they talk about sex. However, different culture will see sex with different point of view. This study aims to find out the differences through the translation of English sexual euphemistic expression into Indonesian. It will describe how those expressions are translated into Indonesian. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The source of the data is an English novel by Eloisa James entitled Desperate Duchesses and its Indonesian version Memikat Kekasih. The result shows that English sexual euphemistic expressions in the novel are translated into Indonesian euphemisms, Indonesian dysphemisms, literal meaning, and description.

The objective of this study was to find out the differences and similarities of using passive voice in Source Text (ST) and translated them into Target Text (TT). The difference and similarity itself was found by comparing two sentences in two languages, between Indonesian and English which focused on using the passive voice sentences. Besides that, a descriptive qualitative method and contrastive analysis technique were used in analyzing 20% of data. The main results of the study were: the data that used active sentence in source language, and transfer it into active sentence (AA) was about 244 data (82 %). Next, the data from active sentence in source language and transfer it into passive sentences (AP) in target language was 45 (15 %). Moreover, the data from source language in the form of passive sentence and translated it into passive sentence (PP) in target language was 10 (3%). However, 0 (0%) data was in passive sentence and translated it into active sentence (PA).
