Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the course module used in EAP teaching at Pharmacy Academy of Surabaya. The coursebook was evaluated in terms of its subject matter, structure and capability to meet students‘ need. Two instruments were employed to draw potential strengths and weaknesses of the coursebook. Firstly, an evaluation checklist adapted from several literatures was designed to serve teachers’ perspective about the coursebook. Secondly, a set of questions was constructed to observe students‘ feedback. Surprisingly, the result of the study shows that eight chapters presented in the module are, considerably, more appropriate for EGAP class rather than ESAP class. Besides, it was found that each chapter is less-defined as every of them is organized differently. Furthermore, the whole aspects conclude that a lot of room remains for improvement for the materials in order to meet the students‘ need.

Abstract

This paper explores swearing utterances in English language use, the hearers referred to, and the functions the utterances imply.  Accounts on the issue are taken from the English-language-affiliated Websites in the Internet. This research is a literature review with interpretative techniques and employs a coding analysis with three proposed premises. As the findings, swearing utterances belong to informal English with notorious, casual, heteregeneous, inconsistent, irregular, and speaker-dependent aspects. Swearing utterances have elaborated literal meaning and creative meaning to various contexts, which are personal and private. Swearing utterances to others are rude, offensive, profane, or obscene, as expressions of anger; however, when adjusted to the context of hearer, the meanings or functions vary. Swearing utterances to others create rude and offensive situations. However, swearing utterances to close people through jokes and possitive connotations may instill solidarity or confirm camaraderie. Swearing utterances concerning internal expressions or expletives function to intensify the messages.

Abstract

Errors are very natural and even become an important part of learning (Davies, 2000:105). Therefore, there are many scientists who analyze errors to achieve better understanding on how students learn language. Based on the importance of conducting error analysis, this research is developed to analyze errors in the usage of English prepositions as there are still limited number of people who analyze this topic. The data used are utterances produced by third year college students majoring in English. All of the students’ utterances are obtained through interview. The data obtained was then transcribed and analyzed by applying a theory of preposition stated by Collins (1991). The results show that there are 15 prepositions which are used incorrectly in the students’ untterances such as about, among, as, at, because of, by, during, for, from, in, of, on, through, to, and with.

Abstract

Following that of Ädel’s approach namely reflexive metadiscourse, this paper investigates the use of metadiscourse in computer mediated communication, specifically those review videos which has been gaining popularity lately as source of information. Metadiscourse is generally seen as commentaries towards the language that is employed to construct the discourse. Reflexive approach emerges as an attempt to challenge previous theories which (unlike the conventional ones) only include references inside the current discourse involving current addresser, addressee(s), and current discourse. The study found 4 metadiscourse classifications and 21 discourse functions performed by speakers in three selected video. Furthermore, as there are tendencies in researching academic written discourse, I wish to explore the spoken non-academic one to provide a fresh contribution regarding the topic. I discover that the markers employed in CMC are less formal than those of the previous studies concern to both written and spoken academic metadiscourse.
