Abstract

This article aims to examine the dynamics of nyai life in the Priangan Residency during the Dutch colonial period between 1870 and 1900. The practice of concubinage involving native women and European men reflected gender inequality, economic pressure, and patriarchal colonial power. The term nyai is often associated with issues of morality and social stigma, but in reality they played an important role as a liaison between native and colonial society. This article also explores the legal regulations regarding mixed marriages and the fate of children from concubinage who often experienced social and legal discrimination. This phenomenon illustrates the dilemma of colonial authorities in regulating public morality amidst economic interests and power. This research uses a historical method that includes the stages of heuristics (collecting sources), source criticism (external and internal), interpretation (interpretation of historical meaning), and historiography (writing history). The sources used come from colonial archives, newspapers, Staatsblad, and documentation from institutions such as KITLV and Delpher. Through this approach, the article presents a critical analysis of the role and position of nyai in the socio-economic structure of the colonial Dutch East Indies.

Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of climate on the formation of social character in Indonesian society based on Ibn Khaldun’s theory. In the Muqaddimah, Khaldun argues that hot and warm climates foster collectivism through environmental adaptation. This research employs a philosophical approach and literature analysis to examine the relevance of this theory within the context of Indonesia’s tropical climate. The findings indicate that the collectivist character of Indonesian society, as seen in practices such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation), reflects an enduring adaptation to ecological challenges. The study also highlights how Indonesia’s agrarian traditions and communal resilience are rooted in climatic necessity. However, the growing impact of globalization and modernity is contributing to a shift toward individualism, disrupting traditional communal patterns. This dynamic tension between collectivist values and individualist tendencies presents new socio-cultural challenges. Ultimately, this study underscores the continued relevance of Ibn Khaldun’s environmental theory for interpreting Indonesia’s socio-cultural transformations and opens avenues for future interdisciplinary research that bridges philosophy, sociology, and climate studies.

Abstract

The Javanese Islamic calendar is a cultural heritage passed down from our ancestors that continues to be preserved today. Some communities still use it in their daily lives. However, not everyone pays close attention to the correction system required for its proper use. Ranggawarsita, a prominent figure of the royal court, wrote a manuscript titled Serat Widyapradhana, which offers a detailed explanation of the application of the Javanese Islamic calendar, including how corrections should be made. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to explain how Raden Ranggawarsita addressed the correction system within the Javanese Islamic calendar. Data was collected through library research, using the Serat Widyapradhana manuscript as the main source. A philological approach was applied to help the researcher better understand the text. The study found, first, that the Javanese Islamic calendar was already in use before the reign of Sultan Agung, particularly by Sunan Giri II. Second, Ranggawarsita explained in his writings how corrections should be made to the calendar, especially regarding the 2400-year kurup cycle, to prevent the calendar from falling out of sync. These corrections are essential to maintain harmony between the Islamic Hijri calendar and the Javanese calendar. This research highlights the need for greater awareness and understanding among users of the Javanese Islamic calendar, encouraging deeper engagement with the system and contributing to the broader field of Islamic astronomy, particularly in the study of calendar variations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the Tsaqifa method on the Qur'anic reading ability of elderly learners at TPQ Masjid Arofah. The Tsaqifa method is a learning approach designed to enhance fluency and comprehension in reading the Qur'an, particularly among elderly students who may face challenges in learning due to age-related factors. This research employs a quantitative approach using an experimental method. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 16 elderly students as respondents. Data were collected through Qur'anic reading tests and analyzed using validity, reliability, and normality tests, as well as Pearson Product Moment correlation with the aid of SPSS 25.0 software. The results indicate that the research instrument is valid and reliable, with a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.863. The data distribution is normal, with a significance value of 0.067 (>0.05). The assessment of the Tsaqifa method shows that 56.25% of students fall into the high category, 31.25% in the moderate category, and 12.5% in the low category. The Qur'anic reading ability of students is also categorized as moderate to high, with a correlation value of r = 0.690, which is higher than the r table value. This confirms a positive and significant effect of the Tsaqifa method on improving the Qur'anic reading skills of elderly learners. The implications of this study suggest that the Tsaqifa method can be used as an effective strategy in Qur'anic learning at TPQ. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for educators in selecting more innovative and effective teaching methods for elderly learners.

The Tahlili interpretive approach is employed for data analysis. Comparative analysis is the data analysis method used in this study. The results of this study indicate that QS. Al-Hujurat: 11-13 contains basic moral education principles for humans, namely respecting and honoring others, avoiding mockery, having good intentions, and not gossiping. These are basic moral education principles and can be applied to fellow Muslims or people of other faiths. Universally, this verse emphasizes the importance of guarding one's speech and actions toward everyone.

Abstract

This study explores the process of gambling legalization in the city of Semarang during the period from 1970 to 1993. The background of the research lies in the contradiction between the moral and legal prohibition of gambling and the reality of government policies that legalized such practices in the form of prize lotteries. The aim of this study is to understand the socio-political dynamics behind the legalization of gambling and its impact on urban society in Semarang. The research adopts a historical method, which includes the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Primary sources consist of local newspapers and legislative regulations. The findings reveal that the legalization of gambling was a state strategy to raise public funds for development while simultaneously attempting to control illegal gambling activities. On the other hand, the policy also illustrates how the state compromised social norms in pursuit of economic interests and political stability. The conclusion of this study is that the legalization of gambling in Semarang was not merely a response to fiscal needs, but also a reflection of the power relations between the state and society during the new order era.

Abstract

Taufan of Nuh caused the entire surface of the earth to be destroyed, except for Nuh’s three sons, their wives and Nuh. The Qur'an only informs us that the descendants of Nuh continued his lineage but does not explain the spread of their civilizations. This article aims to discuss the civilization spread of Nuh’s three sons to three continents and their dominance in the central region (Arab). Using qualitative methods (library research) with a descriptive-analysis approach. Data sources were obtained through observations in divine books, especially the Al-Qur’an, tafsir books and books and journals that fit the theme. From the data that has been collected, it was found that all the nations in the world, namely on the first three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe) came from the descendants of Nuh, namely Sam, Ham and Yafits. Yafits has 7 children, most of whose descendants inhabited the European continent. Ham has 4 children, his descendants inhabited the African continent. Meanwhile, Sam has 5 children, among whom were the prophets and messengers such as Ismail, Ishaq and the Prophet Muhammad, as well as great nations, including the Arabs, who created extraordinary civilization, science and art.
