Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to analyze how has the halal industry evolved and grown in non-Muslim countries, with a specific focus on Thailand as a case study. This study uses a qualitative research method whose unit of analysis is the Thai government with the object of research being Thailand’s policy in promoting itself as a country that is friendly to Muslim tourists as an effort of public diplomacy. According to the findings, the halal industry, which involves producing and distributing goods and services permissible under Islamic law, is regulated in Muslim-majority countries and is growing in non-Muslim countries. Thailand, a non-Muslim country, has successfully developed its halal industry and is now one of the largest exporters. To overcome barriers, Thailand can promote awareness, encourage community involvement, and improve product quality and diversification. Economically, it can provide financial incentives and support for certification, while ensuring a halal-compliant supply chain. Politically, it can strengthen diplomatic relations and develop consistent halal standards. Addressing political and social unrest can create a stable environment for the halal industry. Keywords: Halal industry, non-Muslim countries, Thailand.

Abstract

Abstract: This article delves into the political biography and thought of Lord Henry Stanley, a member of British House of Lords, who embraced Islam in the mid-19th century. Through a global history perspective, this article’s analysis draws on Stanley’s personal writing, historical records, and parliamentary debates to trace his trajectory and analyze his political thought. By locating Stanley amidst the context of 19th-century international politics, Stanley’s biography and political thought challenged the dominant narrative portraying European officers merely as colonialist and imperialist. It also complicates the conventional narrative between Islam and the Christian West dominantly depicted as always an antithesis. Throughout his career in the British House of Lords, Henry Stanley consistently pinpointed the values of justice, which he believed were deeply rooted in the Islamic political system, amidst the increasing racialization of Muslims both in Britain and within the increasingly Eurocentric international community. Although Stanley did not challenge British imperialism in Asia and Africa, he did challenge several British policies in India and the Straits of Malacca, which he thought was the result of British arrogant attitude toward non-European political order. Keywords: Lord Stanley, European empire, Islam, modern, international politics

Abstract

Abstract: On November 9, 2019, the Supreme Court of India issued a ruling allowing for the construction of a temple dedicated to the Hindu deity Ram on the site of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttara Pradesh. Similarly, on July 10, 2020, the State of Council, the highest administrative court in Turkey, issued an order to convert the status of Istanbul's Hagia Sophia from a museum back into a mosque. The court's decision in both nations has been regarded as a transformative political development within their respective contexts. This decision has garnered praise from certain individuals, while also attracting criticism from others, both domestically and internationally. This article is thematically based, library-focused, and qualitative. The article examines and evaluates both cases based on the existing evidence pertaining to the historical structures, and endeavours to propose the most persuasive perspective to adopt in such situations. The study's findings suggest that the judicial decision under scrutiny exhibits a greater inclination towards political considerations rather than rational ones. Keywords: Hagia Sophia, Babri Mosque, Judicial Rulings, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Narendra Modi

Abstract

Abstract: A corpus of poetry by Rukun Nasution (1928-1998) found in 2018 has not been introduced or studied academically. This study is an initial survey that aimed to introduce the poet called Rukun Nasution and map the corpus of his poetry. Biographical writing methods combined with philology and social history found that Rukun Nasution only received formal education from the People's School (Sekolah Rakyat) for three years. He obtained knowledge mainly through religious non-formal learning forums (majlis ta'lim) and independent reading. Rukun Nasution identified available learning potentials around him and maximized it to advance his education. His poetry's creative dimension was manifested using the aa-aa rhyme, with general Islamic themes. This corpus includes three types: 1) his orinigal compositions; 2) translations from Malay to vernacular Mandailing language; and 3) translation of poetries written in Malay script into Latin script. Rukun Nasution's creativity could be considered unique and extraordinary based on his limited education and external environment. Therefore, his corpus of poetry needs further investigation from philological, linguistic, and historical perspectives and an analysis of its content. Keywords: Islamic poetry, Malay literature, vernacular literature, Rukun Nasution

Abstract

This article is an attempt to respond the following two questions; what is the nature of peusijeuk and how it is related to human well-being, and how peusijeuk works as a therapy. Grounded on a critical view upon mainstream theories of psychology, this work accordingly advocate indigenous psychology by majorly comparing it to behaviourist and psycho-analysis theories and, more importantly, presents an alternative therapy for well-being, namely; Peusijeuk therapy.  Quasi-experiments is the main method used to measure the work of peusijeuk as an alternative therapy, while in-depth interview procedure also employed for unearthing therapeutical competences of peusijeut and its philosophical justification.  Finally, the article brings about materials used for Peusijuek and the philosophical signification, steps, and mechanisms of Peusijeuk therapy performance. Grounded in the experiment of five participants and enlightened by Islamic mysticism, such as Ibn Arabi’s teachings, I argue that many elements of nature, e.g., scent, water, soil, rice, salt, tree leaves, and trunks, have baraka, so humans can spiritually benefit from the environment, by way of performing Peusijuek ritual procedures. By doing so, they are able to attain their power/energy, which bring them happiness and improve human mental well-being.

Abstract

This study explores the complexities of Islam in Cyprus, focusing on the interplay between local and transnational Islamic identities within modern Muslim societies. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, the research draws on secondary data from academic sources to analyze how these identities influence religious practices among Muslim communities in Cyprus. The thematic analysis reveals significant patterns in the historical evolution of Islam on the island, highlighting the diversity within its Muslim population and the impact of both textual and contextual factors on their practices. Findings indicate a dynamic interaction between local traditions, particularly Ottoman customs, and global Islamic influences, including transnational movements. This synthesis results in a unique Islamic identity that integrates historical continuity with contemporary adaptations. The insights gained contribute to a deeper understanding of how Muslim societies navigate their religious practices amidst local and global contexts, thereby enriching contemporary Islamic studies and discussions on religious integration in secular states. Keywords: Islam in Cyprus, modern Muslim societies, transnational context, Islamic identity, religious integration

Abstract

This study explores religious moderation within the halaqah education system in West Sumatra, emphasizing the integration of tolerance, harmony, and local wisdom into its curriculum and teaching methods. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research investigates how halaqah education shapes the character of santri and upholds moderate Islamic traditions in the community. The findings reveal that halaqah education remains highly relevant in West Sumatran society due to its ability to adapt to contemporary developments while preserving traditional values. This system has proven effective in fostering religious moderation, promoting tolerance, and nurturing respect for diversity. Consequently, halaqah education serves not only as a platform for transmitting religious knowledge but also as a tool for developing the character of santri to be moderate and open-minded. The study concludes that halaqah-based education significantly contributes to sustaining moderate Islamic traditions, addressing the challenges of modernity, and enhancing social cohesion in a multicultural context. Keywords: Halaqah, religious moderation, local wisdom, West Sumatra

Abstract

Abstract: This study investigates factors contributing to the decontextualisation of dayah as an Islamic educational institution in Aceh. Qualitative research methods, including observation, interviews, and document review, were used to collect data and gain insights into this phenomenon. This study highlights three findings: first, an authoritarian relationship between teungku (Islamic scholars) and students hinders meaningful connection and engagement; second, the use of hierarchical teaching methods further reinforces this disconnection, limiting opportunities for collaboration and active learning; third, outdated facilities present challenges in modernising and adapting dayah institutions. By addressing these factors, dayah institutions can effectively restore their connection with Acehnese youth and foster a comprehensive and contemporary Islamic education. It is recommended that teungku in Aceh integrate technology into their teaching methods, ensuring relevance and appeal to the young generation. This study also shows the need for dayah institutions in Aceh to adapt to the evolving educational landscape and embrace technological advancements. This research contributes to the discourse on educational transformation in Aceh by providing insights into the challenges and potential strategies for revitalizing dayah institutions in the face of a changing educational milieu. Keywords: decontextualization, Islamic traditional learning, dayah, Aceh’s millineal

Abstract

Abstract: This article investigates the role of the Al Jam‘iyatul Washliyah, one of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organizations, in developing hadith studies in the country. This study is based on library research and employs a historical approach. The findings indicate that hadith has been introduced and taught across all Al Washliyah educational institutions from the Dutch colonial period to the present. Several Al Washliyah scholars have published works on hadith studies in both Arabic and Indonesian. Furthermore, the Al Washliyah Fatwa Council, as the organization’s religious authority, acknowledges hadith as the second source of Islamic law. However, it is noted that some fatwas issued by the Council do not heavily rely on the apparent meaning of hadith as a legal reference, but rather refer to established rulings within the Shâfi‘î madhhab.
