Abstract

This research aims to analyze the dialectal differences between two areas in Pesisir Selatan Regency, namely Air Haji and Lumpo. The main focus of this research is to identify phoneme, lexical, and morphological variations that occur in the daily communication of native speakers. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a dialectological approach (Chambers and Trudgill, 2004) and a phonemic framework (Roach, 2009). Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four informants, two from Air Haji and two from Lumpo, as well as using a basic Morriswadesh vocabulary list and other semantic categories. The findings reveal 35 primary data points reflecting dialectal variation between the two areas: 15 phonological variations, 11 lexical variations, and 9 morphological variations. Phonological differences include the deletion and addition of phonemes, assimilation, vowel changes, syllable structure simplification, and lexical equivalence. Lexical differences are reflected in the use of different vocabulary to express the same meaning, while morphological differences involve variations in word forms and grammatical structures. These findings indicate that, although Air Haji and Lumpo are located within the same regency, geographical differences and local cultural factors contribute significantly to language variation

Abstract

This research is titled "Idiomatic Expressions Used in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Movie: A Pragmatics Analysis." This study discusses the form, type, and pragmatic function of idiomatic expressions used by the characters in the film. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with O'Dell and Michael's (2010) theory of idioms and Miles and Huberman's (1994) data analysis model. Data was obtained thru observation and documentation techniques, namely by watching the movie repeatedly, recording dialogs containing idioms, and verifying them with the film script. Based on the research findings, 61 idiomatic data were found, consisting of equations, binomials, trinomials, proverbs, clichés, and fixed statements. The most dominant type of idiom was fixed statements (42.62%), followed by clichés (32.79%), and similes (16.39%), while trinomials were the least frequently found (1.64%). From a pragmatic function perspective, idioms serve to provide emphasis, make language sound more natural, describe social and cultural relationships, convey meaning implicitly, show the speaker's attitude or emotions, and act as a cohesive tool in narratives. This shows that idioms in the film Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children not only embellish the language but also enrich the cultural, emotional, and communicative

Abstract

This research is motivated by the personality of the songwriter performed by Celine Dion. The purpose of this research is to analyze the personality of the songwriter, the forms of loss experienced by the songwriter, and the strength of love experienced by the songwriter in the songs performed by Celine Dion. The  method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data in this song are quotes, sentences related to personality, forms of loss, and the strength of love experienced by the songwriter which are reflected in the songs performed by Celine Dion. The data collection technique in this research is reading, marking data, recording and distinguishing the collected data based on the personality, forms of loss, and the strength of love of the songwriter which are reflected in the songs performed by Celine Dion. The results of this research indicate that in the songs performed by Celine Dion the form of the songswiriter personality consists of Id, Ego, and Super Ego, this is caused by feelings of love for someone, the form of loss experienced is losing oneself and losing love, and the strength of love felt is the strength of love for a partner or loved one and also the strength of self-love.

Abstract

This reseach examines the "Trauma of violence in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz. Through Psychological analysis using the theory of Archetypes, shadow, and Collective unconcious developed by Carl Jung. With a qualitative text analysis approach, the researcher wants to explore how the violent experiences of the characters in the novel, especially Oscar Wao and his family, affect the deep psychological impact. The main focus of the reseach was on identifying the violence experienced by the characters, how individuals reacted to the shadows and how the history of family trauma experiences affected emotional actions and relationships within the family. The findings show that the violence experienced by the characters not only affects their personal lives, but also reflects broader collective trauma in the context of Dominican history and culture under the rule of Rafael Trujillo's regime. This research contributes to the understanding of how literature can reflect and reveal complex psychological experiences towards the development of characters' emotional actions in living their lives.

Abstract

This research examines the psychological struggle of Michael Oher, the central figure in The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis, through the lens of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory published in 1923. The research aims to analyze how Oher’s personality develops in response to both internal desires and external forces, particularly focusing on the conflict between unconscious drives and societal expectations. Freud’s structural theory of the psyche divided into the id, ego, and superego serves as the main theoretical framework for this analysis. The purpose of the research is to understand how Michael Oher’s traumatic past and complex environment shape his identity and behavior. The study also seeks to explore the role of family, education, and social support in transforming Oher from a silent, emotionally distant boy into a successful athlete and functioning adult. To accomplish this, the research applies a qualitative descriptive method, using close reading as the primary technique for data collection. Selected quotations and scenes from the novel are analyzed to identify patterns that reflect Freud’s psychological concepts. The findings indicate that Oher’s life struggle is heavily influenced by unresolved childhood trauma, represented by the dominance of the id in his early life. Over time, with the intervention of the Tuohy family and exposure to structured environments, his ego and superego gradually develop, allowing him to navigate social expectations and personal goals more effectively. This transformation illustrates how external forces can support psychological development and how Freudian theory can deepen our understanding of character growth in literature
