Abstract

This research entitled the Comparison Between Lubuk Gadang and Pasir Talang Dialects in South Solok. The main objective of this research is to compare the dialects of Lubuk Gadang and Pasir Talang, both of which originate from the South Solok region. The research focuses on lexical similarities, lexical differences, and word formation processes within the two dialects. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through direct interviews, observation, note-taking, and audio recordings. This research is grounded in lexical theory, dialectology, and morphological theory. These frameworks were used to analyze the vocabulary of both dialects in order to identify similarities and differences, as well as to understand the word formation processes involved. The results of the analysis revealed that there are 692 lexical items that share similarities between the two dialects, while 92 lexical items exhibit form differences. Additionally, 73 vocabulary items were identified as having different forms but the same meanings. In terms of word formation, several morphological processes were found in both dialects, including borrowing 13 items, compounding 21 items, clipping 3 items, acronym 1 item, and derivation 12 items. These findings highlight the linguistic diversity and complexity within regional dialects in South Solok.

Abstract

The research entitled FBI Criminal Investigation Procedures on Finding a Missing Person in Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl examines how the novel depicts the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s methods in solving Amy Dunne’s disappearance. The study explores how the narrative reflects real investigative practices, particularly regarding criminal evidence, missing person procedures, and underlying motives. The background emphasizes the role of crime fiction in shaping public views of law enforcement, while the purpose is to analyze the representation of FBI methods and assess their effectiveness in uncovering the mystery. This study uses a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach, with Gone Girl as the primary text. Theories of criminal investigation, criminology, and narrative analysis support the interpretation. Data analysis involves categorizing textual evidence, identifying investigative patterns, and interpreting them through forensic and motive-based perspectives. The findings show that the novel illustrates the complexity of FBI missing person cases, highlighting physical and psychological evidence, systematic investigative steps, and the impact of hidden motives. Flynn blends authentic procedures with fictional exaggeration, enhancing narrative tension while emphasizing motive as central to crime. The portrayal reveals both the strengths and limitations of law enforcement in handling such cases.

Abstract

This research analyzes the concept of "fragmented self" in Laurie Halse Anderson's novel Wintergirls, focusing on Lia Overbrook's struggles with anorexia nervosa and bulimia. This issue significantly reflects contemporary mental health challenges exacerbated by social pressures and internal conflicts. The concept of the fragmented self here refers to the disunity or incoherence encompassing an individual's identity, thoughts, and emotions, often manifesting through dissociative conditions, eating disorders, self-harming behaviors, or severe anxiety. The objective of this research is to conduct an in-depth psychological analysis to uncover Lia's self-fragmentation, identify its underlying causes, and understand the psychological consequences she experiences. In this analysis, the researcher utilizes the Freudian psychoanalytic theoretical framework, specifically the concepts of Id, Ego, and Superego. Through applying a descriptive qualitative method by careful textual analysis and literature review, the researcher found that anorexia nervosa is the root of Lia's problems, triggering severe internal conflicts, and this is also reflected in the fragmented writing style of the novel. This research is expected not only to enrich the understanding of psychological concepts within literary contexts but also to raise awareness and empathy towards adolescent mental health issues. Through highlighting Lia's journey, the researcher aims to explain the widespread issue of fragmented identity in contemporary society, providing insights into the psychological basis of such struggles and advocating for greater understanding and support for those facing similar challenges.

Abstract

This research is titled "The Identity Crisis of the Clown in Dazai Osamu's No Longer Human Using Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Theory." This study aims to identify the causes of the identity crisis and alienation experienced by Oba Yozo in the novel No Longer Human, using the psychosocial development stage theory developed by Erik Erikson, with a focus on the fifth stage, "Identity vs. Role Confusion." The method used in this research is qualitative, with the novel No Longer Human as the data source. The research was conducted using data collection techniques such as reading and noting important parts of the novel, and by recording and quoting text from the novel. The research results show that Oba Yozo experienced alienation and confusion from a young age in determining his role in life, both for himself and for society. This led Oba Yozo to create a "mask" to defend himself from the outside world. The alienation, confusion, and the "mask" he created exacerbated Yozo's identity crisis, making him feel like he had failed to be human. This research shows that Yōzō's identity crisis was not only caused by internal factors, but was also influenced by a lack of family and social support. This highlights the importance of affection, support, and healthy social interaction in helping individuals build a complete sense of self and preventing them from feeling alienated from themselves and society.

Abstract

The title of this research is “Narrative Transportation and Propaganda Language on Nike’s YouTube Channel: a Discourse Analysis.” This research aims to analyzed narrative transportation, propaganda language, and cohesion-coherence contained in Nike advertisement. The research method used is the descriptive qualitative discourse analysis. The research data consists of 17 advertisement videos uploaded on Nike's official YouTube platform during the period July 2024 to February 2025. The analysis was conducted using three theories: Transportation Imagery Model theory by Green & Brock, Appraisal theory by Martin & White, and Cohesion-coherence theory by Halliday & Hasan. The findings shows that Nike advertisement use more narratives that tell the character stories of iconic athletes. The storyline consistently features narratives of struggle, self-doubt, and difficult situations athletes face. The language of propaganda is found through a short theme or tagline that appears at the end of the advertisement video. The theme or tagline is explained through the narrator's expression so that it forms the audience's perception of the values offered by Nike. Cohesion and coherence of the narrative are formed through lexical links, the use of conjunctions, and logical storylines so that the advertisement message can be understood and accepted intact by the audience.

Abstract

This research examines the forms of violence against women in Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles through the perspective of radical feminism as proposed by Rosemarie Tong (2009). The focus of the research is directed toward the depiction of Tess’s experiences as the main character who encounters physical, sexual, emotional, and verbal violence, while also exploring how the patriarchal social system influences the course of her life and destiny. The purpose of this research is to analyze how patriarchal power, as reflected through male characters and social institutions such as family, religion, and marriage, shapes Tess’s position as a woman who becomes a victim in a society biased against women, as well as to identify the various forms of violence experienced by Tess Durbeyfield in Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles. The approach applied is descriptive qualitative with the method of content analysis, in which the data are taken from narrative quotations, dialogues, and character interactions that portray practices of gender-based injustice. The findings reveal that Tess’s suffering is not merely the result of individual actions but is rooted in gender inequality institutionalized through cultural traditions, rigid social norms, and male dominance. Although Tess attempts to assert self-awareness, resilience, and courage to resist, her struggle often ends in defeat due to the strong grip of patriarchal values. In conclusion, Tess of the d’Urbervilles not only presents the tragic story of a woman’s life but also serves as a sharp social critique of gender-based power imbalances in the Victorian era, while remaining relevant in addressing discussions on gender equality and violence against women today.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of implicature contained in the Enola Holmes film, as well as explain the meaning contained in it based on Grice's theory of implicature. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach with documentation method. The data were collected from the dialogues between characters in Enola Holmes movie that contain implied meanings, and analyzed based on the theory of implicature which includes conventional implicature and conversational implicature. The results showed that out of 36 data collected, 12 data were categorized as conventional implicature. Meanwhile, the other 24 data are conversational implicatures, consisting of 4 General Conversational Implicature (GCI ) data and 20 Particular Conversational Implicature (PCI)  data. Conventional implicature in this film is characterized by the use of certain expressions that have additional meanings without requiring extensive context. In contrast, conversational implicature arises from the violation of Grice's maxims of cooperation, such as the maxims of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. These findings suggest that implicature is used effectively to strengthen communication in movies, both in message delivery and character development.
