Abstract

In the past, using a conventional media was basic ways to transfer information from the teacher to students. In the era of technology, it is needed to teach using digital media. Therefore, PowToon was implemented as teaching media and it aimed to know the students’ response as well. This research was focused on the implementation and evaluation of the developed PowToon. The data were collected through interview, observation and questionnaire. The result was, developed PowToon could be used to teach English for third-grade students. The media was categorized good based on the result of teacher interview. In relation with the rating of the media combined with the observation checklist, it was found that the implementation could help the teacher in teaching process. From the students’ questionnaire, it was found that the animation video could attract the students’ attention, and it also motivated the student during teaching and learning process.

Abstract

The 21st century requires teachers to be able to integrate 21st century skills into the teaching learning process. A study on analyzing teachers’ readiness in conducting the teaching learning process based on 21st century skills in Bali has not been conducted yet. Hence, this study aimed at analyzing the Elementary English teachers’ readiness in conducting teaching learning process based on 21st century skills. This study which was done at SDK Marsudirini Negara School in Jembrana Regency used sequential embedded mixed-method as the design. The subject were one of the school principals and the English teacher. The data were obtained through questionnaires, observations, document analysis, and interview then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The respondents perceived themselves as ready in conducting teaching learning process based on 21st century skills. However, the 21st century skills were not entirely inserted into the teaching learning process and the teachers are expected to be aware of the changes in the education field.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there was a significant effect of REAP strategy on reading comprehension of the eight grade students in SMP Negeri 3 Tabanan. The design of this study is quasi experiment of post – test only control group design involving 61 students as the sample. The samples were chosen by using random sampling technique. The data was collected through post – test by using multiple choice test. Independent sample test was used to test the hypothesis. The result showed that the main score of experimental group (74.9) was higher than control group (67.3). Inferential statistical analysis’s result (t = .679, df = 59, p<0.05 (0.01)) indicated that there was a significant effect of REAP strategy of students’ reading comprehension of the eight grade students in SMP Negeri 3 Tabanan academic year 201802019. According to Eta Squared formula, the effect size of this research was 0.11 which was considered as moderate effect based on Cohen’s effect size guideline.

Abstract

This research aimed at observing the set-up of the seating arrangement during the instructions and identifying the students' reasons for having seating preferences. This study was conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Banjar, and the subjects were 32 students in 8F class. Two methods were applied in this study, namely observation and interview. Therefore, observation checklist and interview guide were used as the instruments. The results revealed that the set-up of the seating arrangement supported them in terms of comfort, flexibility in doing activities, doing tasks, spaciousness, and collaboration with the students. Meanwhile, it did not support them in terms of concentration, participation in class discussion, and collaboration with the teacher. Regarding their reasons for having particular seats, there were 14 reasons mentioned during the interview. Best friends and leaning on the wall were the factors that had the most and the least effect on the students in choosing their seats.

Abstract

This research was aimed to investigate learners’ perception and practices of understanding teachers’ teaching objectives and requirements related to autonomous language learning, setting up their objectives and study plans to autonomous language learning, and find out learners perceive in learning English autonomously. To gain a deep understanding and utilizing the objectives, the researcher employed descriptive qualitative research. The research findings were extracted through both an online questionnaire and interview. Some constraints were reported in this research, but more positive responses were still shown by the learners. They positively disposed to the notion of learner autonomy. The learners specifically showed positive attitudes toward instructors’ teaching objectives and requirements, setting up their objectives and study plans, and their practices in learning English autonomously. Further researchers, thus, need to research in various universities with a large number to gain a deeper and wider understanding about learners perceive in autonomous language learning.

Abstract

The general objective pursued is to describe and to relate the students’ reading anxiety, reading self-efficacy to their reading competency in the Vocational High School in Singaraja. The design applied is a quantitative research. There were 90 students recruited using cluster quota sampling. The data were gathered using scales and reading test. The obtained data were analyzed in two phases: descriptively and inferentially. Whereas inferentially, the data were analyzed using pair-wise correlation and multiple correlation technique. The findings show that: 1) the students’ reading anxiety is at high level while reading self-efficacy and reading competency are at the low levels; 2) the relations pair-wisely are negative and positive significantly correlated; and 3) the simultaneous or multiple relationships of the reading anxiety and reading self-efficacy to the students’ reading competency is proven to be significant (  =0.81; α =0.01).

Abstract

In The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, Allison Nelson was characterized as an inspiring woman who fought for her dreams. Meanwhile, Noah Calhoun was described as a loving man that respected Allison as a woman. This novel contained traits of rich liberal feminism. The purpose of the present research was to find out the traits of Noah Calhoun and Allison Nelson as the main characters that represented liberal feminism in the novel. The method of this research was textual analysis to analyze the traits. Data collection was linguistics unit corpora recorded in written forms. The finding of this research can be stated that Noah Calhoun and Allison Nelson were categorized as liberal feminists. Their traits were a combination of positive feminine and masculine traits. The traits of the main characters as liberal feminists were appreciative, forceful, strong, devoted, firm, sensitive, confident, patient, carefree, responsible, and independent.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding the type and the function of code-switching that is used by an English teacher in SMA Lab Undiksha. The data were collected through observation and interview. This study used the theory of Soewito, Poplack, and Hoffman to find the type of code-switching. This study use the theory of Mattson and Berenhult combined with Hall and Cook’s theory to find the function of code switching. The result of the study showed that four types of code switching were usually used by the teacher. There are 35 of Inter-sentential switching, 83 of intra-sentential switching, 29 of tag switching and 8 of internal code-switching. The functions for the use of code switching were 5 of topic switching, 23 of affective function and 127 of repetitive function.

Abstract

The current research objectives were to describe and to relate the students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy to their reading competency in the Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri 8 Singaraja. The subject were the students in the eight-grade students. This research was designed a quantitative research. The data were gathered using reading interest scale, reading self-efficacy scale, and objective reading competency test. The obtained data were analyzed in two phases, namely: descriptively, that is the description consisted of central tendency and inferentially, that is the data were analyzed using pair-wise correlation and multiple correlation technique. The findings show that: 1) the students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy, and reading competency on high-order-items are at the moderate levels;2) the relations pair-wisely between the students’ reading interest and reading self-efficacy, students reading interest and reading competency, the students’ reading self-efficacy and reading competency on high-order-items are positively and significantly correlated; and 3) the simultaneous or multiple relationships of the reading interest and reading self-efficacy to the students’ reading competency is proven to be significant.

Abstract

Nowadays elementary school students need learning media to help them learn more effectively. Therefore, this research aimed at implementing and evaluating PowToon as developed media for teaching English in the second grade. The present research employed descriptive qualitative method. There are 6 types of videos used during implementation, namely (1) Fruits, (2) School Uniform, (3) Birthday Party, (4) Parts of Face, (5) Pets, and (6) Parts of the Tree. The instruments were an interview guide and a questionnaire that were used to determine the teacher’s and students’ responses in the evaluation. It was found that PowToon could be used to teach the second graders English. The questionnaire showed that the animation video could attract the students' attention and motivate them. In addition, the results of teacher’s interview showed that this media could assist the teachers in teaching. Therefore, it is recommended for teachers to use PowToon video animation when teaching.
