Abstract

The development of 21st century affects all sectors including the education field. The importance for preparing students with knowledge and skills affects the learning process in this era. Life skills and balanced assessment are the demands in 21st century era. These demands need to be prepared by the teachers since primary education. Therefore, it is important to analyze primary English teachers’ readiness in inserting 21st century skills in terms of lesson planning, teaching and learning process and assessing students’ learning as the important aspect on learning process. This study used embedded mixed method using qualitative description and supported with descriptive quantitative analysis. The subjects of the research were 11 primary English teachers in Denpasar. A questionnaire was used to measure the readiness of the teachers in inserting the skills in the aspects of learning process. The data obtained were calculated and classified into its level of teachers’ readiness. It was found that the teachers perceived themselves as ready in inserting the 21st century skills. This is indicated by 1) their positive responses toward the knowledge about the 21st century skills, 2) they were confident in perceiving their implementation toward 21st century skills, and 3) they were ready in inserting 21st century skills in terms of lesson planning, teaching and learning process and assessing their students’ learning activities. It is expected that the teachers sustain their readiness in inserting the 21st century skills in teaching English for their students at schools.

Abstract

The current research objectives were to analyse the eleventh grade students’ textbook in the Senior Vocational High School publishes by the Indonesian Ministry of National Education based on the 2013 Curriculum. The research problems were focused on the speech acts’ social functions, linguistic features, and language elements. The research was designed in a qualitative approach. Data were collected through document analysis method. Data were analysed descriptively by classifying the speech acts’ social functions, linguistic features, and language elements. The research was delimited on the verbal acts or speech acts, focusing on their social functions, linguistic structures, and language features as outlined in the 2013 Curriculum (Kemdikbud 2016). The three verbal learning focus assisted students in improving their communicative competence in English. The research findings are, firstly, there were four speech act types found, namely directive, assertive, expressive, and commissive acts. The speech acts’ social functions were ordering, asking, telling, advising, praying, stating, explaining, welcoming, thanking, apologizing, offering and refusing. Secondly, the speech acts’ linguistic features designed were imperative, interrogative, and declarative sentences. Thirdly, the speech acts’ language elements specifically grammatical rules used were simple present tense, simple past tense, present continuous tense, present perfect tense, and past continuous tense.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out teaching strategies used by English teachers in an online learning. The subject of this study is English teachers at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja. This study was qualitative research which uses a case study research design. The methods of data collection were observation and interview. This study used three instruments such as observation checklist, questionnaire, and interview guide. The findings showed that English teachers at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja used learning by doing and learning by reflection in the online learning. Four English teachers were considering about aspects of learning by doing and learning by reflection. Besides, during the online learning, it was found five obstacles. The English teachers were also provided the solutions for the obstacles.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyzethe types and functions of code switching used by the actors and actress in Indonesian movie entitled “Bridezilla”. This study used descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, this study used document analysis method with checklist analysis form and taking a note as the instruments used. There 5 were steps done in order tocollect the data, such as watching movie, giving mark in the checklist analysis form, taking a note, giving explanation and conclusion based on the results of analysis. It was found that in “Bridezilia” movie consisted ofcode switching in 35 dialogs, there were three types of code switching, such as Tag-Switching13 dialogs, Inter-Sentential 10 dialogs and Intra-Sentential Switching in 12 dialogs. Meanwhile, there were 2 functions of code switching existed in the movie. It can be concluded that the existence of code switching in Indonesian movie indicating that the other language has big impact toward the first language.

Abstract

The focus of this research was to analyze the teacher's perception of self-directed learning, to observe activities assigned by the teacher in implementing self-directed learning, and to identify self-directed learning components from the activities assigned by the teacher. The embedded mixed-method was used as a design in which the more dominant was qualitative data rather than quantitative data. SMA Negeri 4 Singaraja was chosen as the research setting and one English teacher who teaches in the tenth-grade at this school was chosen as the subject in this study. The researcher, self-rated questionnaire, observation table, and identification table were used as instruments in this research. The self-rated questionnaire showed that the teacher-rated himself to have high knowledge of self-directed learning but in fact, the observation shows that the teacher was not able to implement well that knowledge into online learning. The data showed the mismatch between teacher perception and activities of self-directed learning assigned to students in online learning.

Abstract

This study is focusing on the mapping of word shoot meanings. The collected data was qualitatively analyzed, it was starting by reading some sources, finding a word to be analyzed, reading carefully the source text and the target text, taking note, analyzed the text by NSM approach by Wierzbicka (1999). The data in this writing was taken from Colour Magazine Garuda Indonesia and used one of the prevalent comic series of Tintin entitled The Adventures of Tintin: Tintin in America and Tintin the shooting star. The technique of this study were three steps, they are finding the word which want to analyzed, read the text carefully, finding the word with its translation which want to discuss, directly noted the word which was according to the topic. The result of this study showed that the findings of three meanings of one word shoot. Some of the translation could convey the meaning therefore the reader in target language is easily read and understood.

Abstract

People can learn human characterization by reading a novel since all characters reflect real-life human characteristics. The study aimed to describe the characterization of Amanda Collier as the female main character in Nicholas Sparks’ The Best of Me (2011). By employing qualitative data analysis from Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, the present study incorporated the data collection, data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing into a simultaneous, interactive process that was conducted repeatedly to build the research’s trustworthiness. It was revealed that as the main character, Amanda Collier was mainly described as a pretty school girl that made her popular at her school. When she grew up, was also described as a beautiful woman. Amanda Collier was rich and had a college education. Amanda Collier had strong curiosity and she was brave and impulsive. Furthermore, she was also described as generous because she made time to volunteer in a hospital to take care of children with cancer. From this study, it is implied that while enjoying the romance, readers of Nicholas Sparks’ The Best of Me can also learn various good characters reflected in Amanda Collier’s characterizations.

Abstract

People's thoughts on a particular topic were represented through language style. This study aimed at investigating kinds and functions of language style that students use when giving presentations on YouTube. There were a total of 15 students who took part in the study. A descriptive qualitative design was used in this study. The observation sheet and table classification of the types of language styles were used as research instruments. The findings revealed that concrete word (14%), abstract word (32%), general word (4%), specific word (4%), and scientific word (10%) were used in the language style based on diction. Meanwhile, antithesis (10%), repetition (10%), climax (12%), and anticlimax (4%) were among the language style based on sentence structure. Abstract word and climax made prominent appearances in both classifications, according to both data. The functions of the language style were expressive (18%), directive (43%), referential (17%), metalinguistic (7%), and phatic (15%). It suggested that directive had the most prominent expressions.

Abstract

Students who has special needs, need to be taught with special education. The fact is students with special education cannot put in the class with students in general school especially in the learning activity. One of the students with SEN that needs more attention during the classroom activity is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In this case, using kinds of reinforcements as a strategy to manage student’s behavior and also catch student’s attention during the learning process is needed. Therefore, this study aims to identify types of reinforcement usually used by the English teacher at SLB Negeri 1 Denpasar, in order to reveal what kind of reinforcement that usually used by the English Teacher for students with ASD and how the implementation of the reinforcement used. This research utilized a qualitative approach and descriptive method. The subject of this study was one English teacher at Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB) Negeri 1 Denpasar. The data collection using reinforcement checklist, interview guide, and audio recording. This research showed, there are 3 types of reinforcement the teacher usually used, such positive verbal reinforcement, positive non-verbal reinforcement, and tangible reinforcement. The Implementation was looking at the students need such: attract students’ interest, appreciation and control students’ behavior.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the improvement in English learning achievement of students of class XI IBB 2, SMA Negeri 1 Sukasada in the 2019/2020 Academic Year in the "English" subject through the application of the Jigsaw Cooperative Learning model.This research design uses classroom action research design. This study consisted of two cycles and each cycle consisted of two meetings, consisting of four stages namely planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. Matters related to student assessment in cycle I and cycle II of the teacher use the Jigsaw Cooperative learning model with mastery learning adapted to the KKM which has become a school agreement, which is 78. The application of the Jigsaw Cooperative learning model, students get ample opportunities to practice skills and also give extensive time to learn movement both individually and in groups, the atmosphere of student learning during learning activities appear to be free, cheerful, passionate, and conducive. The author also documents all learning activities both in cycle I and cycle I.The results showed that English Language Learning Achievement in Class XI IBB 2 of SMA Negeri 1 Sukasada in Academic Year 2019/2020. Proven in English learning outcomes in accordance with data analysis in the first cycle and second cycle, the percentage of mastery learning classical in the first cycle of 74.8% which is in the category of not good. The percentage of mastery learning classically in the second cycle is 85.81% which is in the good category. Thus the percentage of completeness in English Learning Achievement increased by 11.01% from cycle I to cycle II, so it can be concluded that through the application of the Jigsaw Cooperative learning model in English material can be increased in class XI IBB 2 students of SMA Negeri 1 Sukasada Academic Year 2019/2020.
