Abstract

Muslims are obliged to follow Shariah Laws which require them to consume the Halal food and products. One of the ways to authenticate the Halalness of food is through the Halal certification. This certification system can guide Muslims in making decision for certain products and services without hesitation. Because of the demand for halal products and services is very promising, more and more companies are starting to certify their products and services. This demand is also true to one of the largest Malaysias contributors to the national economy - hotel industry. The Halal certified food can give an extra edge to the industry in luring not only the local tourists but also the international tourists as well. Despite the increase in demand for certification, the statistics released by JAKIM in 2017 showed that there were only 442 certified Halal hotel out of 4661 hotels in Malaysia. This could be due to numerous challenges faced by companies in obtaining the certification. One of the main challenges of obtaining the certification is due to the lack of understanding of the Halal certification process itself. Hence, this paper attempts to introduce a determinant success factors framework of Halal certification supply chain related to the hotel industry. A quantitative study was adopted to achieve the objective. The findings revealed the determinants factors. This framework can be used for hotels to improve their understanding as well as their initiatives in obtaining the Halal certification.

Abstract

Construction materials play significant role in construction industry which therefore requires fully attention when creating project plan. Materials form a large part in total cost of construction project. The absence of materials when needed is one of the main causes of loss of productivity in a worksite. Current materials management practices in the construction industry are performed on fragmented basis with many problems faced when managing material supply chain, especially during pre-construction phases. These problems are the main root that causing performance-related problems such as delay in material ordering and receiving, low productivity, cost and time overrun, conflict and disputes. Thus, this paper reviews and discusses the activities and problems faced in material supply chain management during pre-construction phases. It also reasons out on the potential of SCM to be the way forward for improving problems of construction industry (i.e. material supply chain management). A series of in-depth literature review was conducted towards digging the relevant points towards achieving the aims of this paper. In the end, it was clear that material supply chain practices at pre-construction phases are still at below optimum level and that SCM literatures strongly support of it being the potential saviour.

Abstract

This paper is about studied the conflicts within the Production Department where ship repair works are carried out without proper establishment and full utilization of Production Friendly Drawing (PFD) produced by the Engineering Department. In order to resolve this problem, the qualitative study method was conducted in the shipyard to propose the best solution to overcome this issue. Production need to utilize the PFD to ensure ship repair works perform in accordance with best engineering practice while designer in Engineering Department must ensure the production drawing produced is friendly enough and accurate. PFD as one of the conflict resolution is chosen to overcome this issue while qualitative as a method being deploying to engage the production and designer intervention to come out with more efficient and effective solution for this problem. There are two findings have been discussed and compared in which the conclusion of the result was very significant.

Abstract

This study compares the paddy production efficiency and farmers environmental awareness using both stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA), the primary data collected from paddy farmer organizations known as Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan (PPK) under Muda Agricultural Development Authority, Kedah, Malaysia. From the results, the coefficients of area and wage are observed significant and positive impact on paddy production while the effect of overall cost, cost on seed and fertilizer are found negative but the cost on fertilizer is recorded significant. The knowledge on environment and contract with agricultural officers are two exogenous factors that has positive significant impact while the education of the farmer factor has a negative significant impact. All the PPKs performance considered is observed on an average but they have the opportunity to increase more than 50% of their production by using same amount of inputs. The performance of Kerpan PPK is found higher than that of other PPKs when the effects of exogenous factors are considered in SFA. The performance of Kubang Pasu PPK is found minimum comparing to the other PPKs using DEA which is observed similar with SFA with exogenous factors. Again, the Kepala Batas PPK is recorded higher relative performance.

Abstract

This study intends to explore the impact of an industry-specific dimension of service quality in automotive after-sales service and how it influences the level of customer loyalty towards Malaysian national carmakers. Each service industry carries different characteristics of consumer behavior and thus, an industry-specific measure of service quality to capture the uniqueness of different service setting is required. In relation to that, this study has evaluated service quality in automotive after-sales service as a second-order construct which allows for identification of the relative importance of each dimension in influencing the level of customer loyalty. Aside from that, the fierce competition from the non-national brands in Malaysian automotive market and the attractive offers made by the alternative workshops for car service maintenance and repair have motivated this study to empirically examines the competition factor of alternative attractiveness and its influences on customer loyalty. The data collected through the technique of intercept survey in systematic sampling from 312 respondents were analyzed using PLS-SEM. The findings revealed that customer service was the most important dimension of service quality that contributes to the positive relationship with customer loyalty. Meanwhile, support service was found as the impotent element of service quality dimension, however, the positive significant relationship of service quality with customer loyalty showed that support service is still important to capture a higher level of customer loyalty. Aside from that, the finding also showed that the competition variable of alternative attractiveness was not a significant contributor to influence the level of customer loyalty. Further, this study benefited the Malaysian national carmakers as it provides empirical evidence on the relative importance of service quality dimension. The role of competitors also revealed to help in strategic decision-making in which may allow the national carmakers to sustain as a market leader in the local automotive arena.

Abstract

Smart Tailor is an architecture that integrates various stakeholders such as tailors, designers, and customers in a garment industry. The architecture provides the ability to promote, manage and fulfill supply and demands of their product via electronic ways. Currently, the implementation of the related transaction processes is done manually which may cause time consuming and inefficiency in fulfilling the supply and demands of the garment products. Therefore, this paper aims to construct a conceptual model of Smart Tailor Architecture. This study adopted the first phase of the Rational Unified Process approach, Inception, by identifying the goal of the conceptual model and the verified requirements of the Smart Tailor architecture. Then, the verified requirements were transformed into the Smart Tailor components using the Unified Modeling Language approach. Finally, the verified components by experts become a conceptual model of the Smart Tailor Architecture. The model may contribute to the garment industry stakeholders as well as researchers, decision makers, and software developers.

Abstract

Agricultural production process typically produces two types of outputs which are economic desirable as well as environmentally undesirable outputs (such as greenhouse gas emission, nitrate leaching, effects to human and organisms and water pollution). In efficiency analysis, these undesirable outputs cannot be ignored and need to be included in order to obtain the actual estimation of firms efficiency. There are several approaches that has been proposed in DEA literature to account for undesirable outputs. Many researchers have pointed that directional distance function (DDF) approach is the best as it allows for simultaneous increase in desirable outputs and reduction of undesirable outputs. Additionally, slack based DEA approaches considers the output shortfalls and input excess in determining efficiency. The proposed model uses an enhanced DEA model which is based on DDF approach and incorporates slack based measure to determine efficiency in the presence of undesirable factors. Later the proposed increase in desirable outputs and reduction in undesirable outputs can be found for inefficient farmers. The developed model is used to determine rice farmers efficiency form Kepala Batas, Kedah. The study found 13 out of 30 farmers are CRS efficient and 17 out of 30 farmers are VRS efficient. From the basic DEA model, higher number of efficient farmers are identified due to the fact that the effect of undesirable outputs is not included in the model. Generally, DEA models which considers the effects of undesirable outputs produces more robust results.

Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze the concept of localization and its relationship with the psychological performance of zakat. It argued that localization could produce development opportunities from the management decentralization of supply chain in zakat institution. In this study, localization is treated as the mediator, while property rights of zakat and asset specificity performed as the independent factors in determining the performance of zakat. Data from 428 samples of zakat payers reveal that localization was performed as the complementary partial mediation toward the performance of zakat. This is due to the property rights of zakat and the asset specificity have the direct impact on the psychological performance. Hence, further exploration of the innovation in supply chain management, especially on the aspect of decentralization of zakat is needed. This study suggested that development opportunities could be met by applying the concept of localization in the zakat institution.
