Abstract

Within the fourth stage of industrialization, artificial intelligence and in particular the multi-agent systems paradigm is highly adopted. Within the agent approach, the industrial resources are defined as intelligent agents that negotiate with each other to implement dynamic reconfiguration and reach agility and higher customer satisfaction. In this paper a smart configuration of the agent-based system for multi-product dyadic supplier selection is proposed. The objective is to select suppliers for multiple products simultaneously in a vertical collaboration context while involving the customer of the purchasing company and considering its preferences. Negotiation experiments are conducted for initial validation of the proposed conceptual architecture.

Abstract

Closed-loop supply chain has gained a significant attention during the recent decades since there is an increased awareness toward sustainable development. However, the implementation of closed-loop supply chain is confronted with numerous barriers and challenges due to uncertainties in input as well as in process. In contrast to manufacturing process where the input is mostly homogeneous raw material, the reverse chains input comes from products end-of-use or end-of-life; therefore the timing, quality and quantity are uncertain. The recovery process also brings other challenges due to various quality grades of the product returns and various recovery options. On the other hand, information technology has been studied extensively in relation to supply chain management. Most of the works show that the use of information technology could enhance supply chain performance. However, the study on the importance of information technology in closed-loop supply chain is still limited. In this paper, we discuss the role of information technology and then propose a conceptual framework of decision making in adopting IT in closed-loop supply chain management.

Abstract

Strategies to control the Bullwhip effect in supply chains have been the focus of a substantial amount of research in the last few decades. Some strategies were based on the implementation of information sharing and collaboration with retailers. Other strategies suggested the use of the vendor-managed inventory (VMI) approach. VMI however, requires significant implementation challenges to gain the trust and acceptance of the retailers as it gives the full control of the retailers inventory to the supplier. New type of strategies has been recently suggested where the supplier can control retailers orders with replenishment decisions that can decrease the effect of the bullwhip phenomenon by controlling the replenishment orders to a pool of retailers and ended up with preference discrimination among the retailers. This paper proposes a strategy that controls the fulfillment quantities to individual retailers orders, independently of other retailers, in a way that conserves the expected mean of these orders while reducing their variance. This will lead to reducing the impact of the bullwhip effect on the supplier side. Fortunately, this proposed strategy eventually improves the service level on the retailer side.

Abstract

The textile industry is Pakistans largest and one of the oldest manufacturing industries. Widely available local cotton and continuous public support have been important factors in the growth of the textile industry. However, the garment sector in Pakistan is trapped at a low-equilibrium in a high value-added categoryproducing low-price items for mass retailers. The objective of this paper is to identify the main reasons for the relative stagnation and lack of competitiveness of Pakistans garments sector in light of survey data collected form 234 garments manufacturers. We use Global Value Chain (GVC) framework to analyze Pakistans garment industry. To come out of low-equilibrium and move up the garments value chain, the sector requires continual investment in state of the art technology, a trained workforce, and agglomeration economies or intra-cluster spill-overs.

Abstract

Risk has penetrated in every aspect of life; no one can escape from it. It can disrupt not only the organization but whole system. It has become essential to mitigate the risks from each and every part of the system. Financial risks are considered more dangerous for the organization. This research aims to highlight the most important accounting knowledge that is forming the key of the auditing process, and how the auditors can modernize this knowledge. In order to access these objectives, the researcher conducted a telephone survey with 64 Jordanian auditors. The main results of this research revealed that; accounting knowledge is very important for the auditing process because it helps the auditor to discover any fraud in the financial transactions and statements, therefore modernizing the accounting knowledge becomes from the priorities of attention of the auditor and disclosure of financial statements that reflect validity and credibility increases stakeholder's satisfaction. According to these results, the researcher recommends that training courses that allow them to exchange their experiences, auditors should focus on manipulation through accruals and allowances and auditors should discuss their observations with the internal audit committee in the company. This study is conducted to only limit industry with few interviews only, to generalize the findings of this study, it is recommended to conduct the quantitative research with more respondents.

Abstract

The mechanism of how transparency can help to enhance the performance of humanitarian logistics (HL) following disaster relief operation (RO) needs to be explored. Thus, the main purposes of this paper are to systematically review the barriers to and benefits of transparency in the field of HL in order to improve the performance of HL, and also to highlight the role and unique attributes of transparency in the field of HL. A systematic literature review using the CIMO (context, intervention, mechanism, and outcomes) logic approach was adopted to perform the systematic analysis of the previous investigations relevant to the performance enhancement of HL. Most such previous research investigated transparency in the context of HL, with little examination of the outcomes of transparency in HL. Based upon this process, disaster risk can be reduced and managed through efficient HL. So far, the efficiency and performance of HL has been improved through coordination, collaboration and partnership. In the present study, recent developments corresponding to performance enhancement of HL through transparency are reviewed systematically, with a particular focus on the importance of transparency, what organizations can do to become more transparent and the challenges and potential benefits of transparency. The authors provide an in-depth understanding of the barriers and challenges to transparency faced in this field. Furthermore, the challenges in comparing with recent research are also discussed, along with future directions to improve the performance enhancement of HL through transparency. However, the poor performance of HL is one of the challenging issues associated with disaster risk management. This review article will be fruitful for novice researchers and practitioners in managing disaster risk through efficient HL and further advancement in the field of HL. Furthermore this article raises the awareness of the importance of carefully evaluating decisions related to the fair distribution of relief items.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the global expansion of UBER in Asia. The perspective is based on the context of internationalization process of ICT companies, especially the ride-hailing developer firms. The expansion of Uber was aggressive using a standard business model in every market that they get into. They focused on scale economy rather than localization of their services. The case analysis suggests that UBER is unsuccessful in its global expansion due to a number of factors especially the host economy context and local competition. Eventually, the company retreated in Asia and refocused its efforts in their home market. The case shows that the global expansion of ride-hailing firms is not as easy as the born global perspective would predict, as there are still a lot of frictions in the global market.
