Abstract

Sociolinguistics factors influence the level of English Language proficiency among Malaysian students. Thereare three contextual factors involved which are the participants, the environment and culture. Participants refer to the students who come from different backgrounds with diverse needs and goals of learning the language. Language distance, native language proficiency, prior knowledge of the second language, dialect and register language status and attitudes play a crucial role in this factor. Besides that, the participants’ integrative and instrumental motivations are also contributing factors to the different level of proficiency in second language acquisition. The second factors is the environment which includes home support, the school environment and the community. Home support is concerned with atmosphere that parents create at home regarding language use, the school environment refers to peer groups, teachers and the learningprocess, whereas the community deals with the society that the students interact with. Finally cultural factors such as cultural differences and settings also have brought the different levels of proficiency among students in Malaysia.

Abstract

This research is based on the needs to investigate the students’ ability in writing a research proposalfor the fourth year students at English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and EducationUniversity of Lancang Kuning. This research aims at analyzing the students’ ability of the fourth year students at English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and Education University of Lancang Kuning in writing a research proposal. The method employed in this research is qualitative method with survey research design. The total number of population in this research were 132 students. The sample elected were 20 students. Based on the data which have been collected and analyzed, it were found that the students’ ability in writing a research proposal categorized into “middle”. The average score achieved was 67.1. It was categorized into middle. Based on the research finding above, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in writing a research proposal is categorized into middle. This result is in line with the analysis of writing a research proposal using scoring rubric available in this research.

Abstract

This present study is designed to analyze a discourse of recent job vacancies in media. It aims tohelp and gives a perspective regarding of the opportunity offered by media on their job vacancy pages. The data of this study based its collection of 4.973 job vacancy ads in 2 largest newspapers in Riau Province from March to April 2015. Using Content analysis in discourse analysis area as the framework this study tries to answer a question in alumni’s mind “Where do we go after graduate?”. The analysis of this study reveals that the alumni must see the opportunities offered both in non-teaching and the teaching category after they graduated from university. This study shows that teaching category offers 149 (3%) positions and non-teaching category offers more opportunities 1.668 (44%) positions from the total collections of 4.973 JV ads. The data also found the 10 most frequently jobs and the requirements posted in newspaper either in teaching or non-teaching category.

Abstract

The Purpose of this research was to find out students’ ability in reading texts in Test of English for the Foreign Language (TOEFL) at English Education Department of Lancang Kuning University. Design of this research was survey design. Sample of the research was 23 students at the Seventh semester Students of English Education Department of Lancang Kuning University. The researcher used test as instrument that was reading texts in TOEFL in term of multiple choice. Test was analyzed by using ‘descriptive statistics’. The result of analyzing data showed that the students’ scores was 1214, mode was 46, median was 52, variance was 157.35 and standard deviation was 12.54. Mean was 52.78 Thus, researcher concluded that students’ ability in reading texts in TOEFL was categorized into weak

Abstract

This research is concerned about students’ ability in identifying types of supporting ideas of text (Example and Illustration, Reason, Facts Statistics, and Description). The aim of this research is to increase their knowledge about types of supporting detail so they are not only read a text but also know about types of supporting detail. This research used descriptive quantitative, the writer taken the data used test; the test consists of ten items. After analyzing the data, writer concluded that the English students at the fourth semester in identifying types of supporting ideas were categorized into good level. The writer found that there were some of students have low proficiency in identifying types of supporting detailsand most of students have a good proficiency.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out wheter Interactive Video Multimedia can better improve thestudents’ vocabulary mastery at the grade II A students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 2 Pekanbaru, and to find out factors that influence it. In collecting the data, the researcher used vocabulary test, observation checklist, filed notes, and interview. This classroom action reasearch consisted of three cycles and three meetings of each cycle.Based on the findings, the use of interactive Video Multimedia could better improve students’ ability in vocabulary mastery at the Grade II A students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 2 Pekanbaru. The improvement was shown by the increasing of the students’ ability in vocabulary mastery. Finally, the classroom action research by using Interactive Video Multimedia could improve the vocabulary mastery by Grade II A students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 2 Pekanbaru.

Abstract

In this research, researcher found that students had low in reading comprehension of recount text.Where, the students’ average score of reading comprehension in recount text was 60. It can not pass the standard minimum of school. This research is classroom action research. And the researcher used listen Read Discuss strategy to solve the students’ problem. The purpose of this research was to solve students’ problem in reading comprehension of recount text. This research was done in two cycle, and the result of analysis showed that the average score of the students based score was 60. The average score of the students in cycle I was 77, although the students’ average have been improved, the researcher conducted cycle II. It because there is one indicator that could not pass the passing grade. And students’ average in cycle II was 83. It had improvement 23 points from based score to cycle II. And the researcher concluded that applying Listen Read Discuss strategy could better to solve students’ reading comprehension problem in recount text.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out and explain the using of power point presentation in improvingstudents’ reading comprehension of short functional texts and to find out and explain the factors that influences the changes of students’ reading comprehension of short functional texts. Design of this research was classroom action research. The researcher used test as instrument that was reading texts. The result of analyzing data showed that the students’ scores could increase the students’ reading comprehension of short functional text. This improvement is influenced by several factors. The first factor is material. The choice of material which can invite the students’ interaction is very important. The material of reading short functional text should be new, various and relevant with the students’ reality life. Thus, it can make them interested in watching the material.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menemukan 17 afiksasi pada wacana Ngenal Lagu-lagu Lampung. metodepengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif. Langkah-langkah analisis data yang dilakukan yaitu menemukan topic, membaca data, membaca data sesuai dengan topic, mencari pola, menandai data sesuai pola identifikasi, mencari contoh lain dari pola yang hendak dipakai, mencari hubungan antara pola-pola yang sudah ditemukan, menuliskan pola yg sudah ditemukan menjadi satuan tulisan secara umum, dan menemukan kutipan untuk mendukung tulisan. Pada data tersebet ditemukan prefiks, sufiks, dan sirkumfiks. Afiksasi pada dialek A ditemukan tegh-, di-, be-, se-, -ni, -an, -i, nge-i,pe-an, ke-an, pegh-an, peng-an, mem-ko dan nge-k. Afiksasi pada dialek O ditemukan ter-, di-, se-, -no, -an, -i, nge-i, peran, ke-an, ke-an, peng-an, pe-an, mem-ken dan nge-ke. Pola dari pembentukan katanya yaitu: PREFIKS + KATA DASAR= KATA BARU, KATA DASAR + SUFIKS = KATA BARU, dan PREFIKS + KATA DASAR = KATA BARU.

Abstract

The problem of this research is based on students ability in writing recount text at the eighth grade ofSMPN 21 Pekanbaru. Most of students faced difficulties in the areas of tenses or structure masteries, lack ofvocabulary, mechanical skills, organization, and the content of the text. The purpose of this research was toimprove students’ writing ability especially in recount text by using imitation strategy. The design used in thisresearch was Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of two cycles. There was an improvement ofstudents’ skill in writing, it can be seen from base score was 41,37, cycle I was 63,18 and in cycle II there wasimprovement to be 83,14. It was caused by some factors, those are teacher and students have relationship. The students interested toward the imitation strategy and students’ were motivated, and fun learning. In conclusion, imitation strategy could improve students’ writing ability and could achieve the minimum level of achievement of writing ability especially in recount text.
