Abstract

Code-switching is a common phenomenon in a bilingual and multilingual society. People utilize codes in different forms of interactions for various reasons and functions. This paper investigates the types and functions of code-switching between English and Bahasa Indonesia that occur in lyrics. Fifteen Indonesian songs produced from 2009 to 2019 were examined. This analysis reveals that four types of code-switching occur in the lyrics of Indonesian popular songs: code-switching between sentences (intersentential), code-switching within sentences (intrasentential), code-switching involving changes of pronunciation, and emblematic code-switching. It further reveals that the functions of code-switching in the lyrics vary from discussing particular topics, lexical needs and availability, being emphatic, expressing group identity, simplifying words and expressions, and conveying a strong emotion/gaining attention.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to explore how continuous professional development is conducted, who conducts it, and the factors that influence it. According to the laws of the Republic of Indonesia, teaching is a professional job that requires certain educational and training qualifications so that teachers can become professional personnel. By seeing the importance of professionalism in this work and in order to see the picture of the CPD of teachers in East Kalimantan, this research is important to carry out. This research uses a qualitative case study method. The subjects of this study were teachers (n=10) from ten schools in Samarinda, Kutai Kartanegara, and Balikpapan. Data were collected using a CPD questionnaire and interviews. The data obtained were analysed and presented with descriptions and tables or charts. The data indicated that most of the teachers participated in the study are aware of the components of professional teacher indicated from the government laws. The study also reveals how the CPD is conducted by different stakeholders. Some suggestions are proposed based on the results of the study.

Abstract

An abstract is a brief overview of a research paper. Indonesian undergraduate students are often required to submit their thesis abstracts in Indonesian and English. Various studies related to rhetorical move and translation techniques of abstracts have been done previously, but not many analyzed undergraduate students’ thesis abstracts across languages. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the move-step of the abstracts, and to see translation techniques in different abstract moves. This study used 60 undergraduate thesis abstracts from English Language and Literature and Indonesian Language Literature study programs as the data. As the framework for the data analysis, this study employed Hyland’s (2000) five-move model and Molina & Albir’s (2002) translation techniques. The findings show that despite writing in different languages, both Indonesian and English abstracts were realized with similar rhetorical moves and steps. Move 3 and 4 were found in all of the abstracts, while Move 5 was only realized in small numbers across languages. In relation to translation techniques, it is found that Literal translation is used more frequently than other translation techniques. This study recommends a more extensive study that involves more data from different fields to expand the existing knowledge relating to rhetorical move and translation techniques in the academic field, especially in undergraduate students’ abstracts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the use of operational verbs based on Anderson’s taxonomic cognitive domain on test items of Indonesian language exams in the public vocational high school in Bengkulu, Indonesia. This is qualitative in nature employing descriptive method as the research design. The data were obtained from test items of Indonesian language school examinations in a public senior vocational school which delivered to twelve graders in the academic year of 2019 with 45 questions in total. The data were documented and analyzed qualitatively. This turned out that operational verbs of the cognitive realm based on Anderson’s taxonomy are two items of remembering, two items of classifying, an item of summarizing, four items of inferring, an item of predicting, three items of interpreting, an item of executing, six items of analyzing, twenty items of selecting, two items of assessing, an item of checking, and two items of formulating which accounted for 24 verbs in total. However, the shows that only 12 verbs on the 12 test items are considered high-level thinking skills which resulted in suggestions to consider

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the English components that need to be mastered for acquiring writing and reading. Writing needs various vocabularies to build different sentences. Reading needs understanding of different meaning of vocabularies based on the context in the sentence. Hence, vocabulary is important in English language learning to support writing and reading. Regarding the importance of vocabulary, writing, and reading, the aim of this research is to test the effect of vocabulary mastery towards writing ability in English. It is also to test moderating effect of reading ability in strengthening or weakening the relation. This study used moderated regression analysis (MRA). Then, this research used the test as research instrument. The instruments had been valid and also reliable. Classical assumption tests were used before the research analysis. The samples were Management students of semester four and six. Descriptive analysis towards each variable is used to know students’ ability in English. To analyze the effect of independent variables towards dependent variable, it used linear regression analysis. To analyze moderating effect, it used moderating regression analysis. From this research result, it was proved that vocabulary had positive significant effect towards writing skill. Reading skill moderated the relation of vocabulary towards writing skill. Further research can focus on experimental research of vocabulary, writing, and reading.

Abstract

This study aims to determine how the application of the TPS (Think-Pair-Share) type of cooperative learning model assisted by Google Hangout can improve the quality of learning in seventh semester students of the Indonesian Language Education Study Program, FKIP UNIB, in the Literary Expression course. The data analysis technique used in this study was a descriptive method that produced an overview of the extent to which the quality of learning has improved by using the TPS (Think-Pair-Share) type of cooperative learning model assisted by Google Hangouts for students who were the research samples. This classroom action research was carried out in two cycles, and each cycle used the main digital learning room, namely the Google Hangout application. Data collection techniques were carried out through non-test techniques at the beginning and end of cycles I and II using questionnaires and observation sheets. In the first cycle, the results obtained had not reached the expected target. The target required was reached in the second cycle. The learning outcomes of the second cycle of students obtained an A score of 13 people (36%), a B value of 18 people (50%), a C value of 5 people (14%), and a D value of 0 people (0%). These results indicate that the target achievement of 30% had been successfully achieved by applying the TPS learning model assisted by the Google Hangouts.

Abstract

The factors that led to the extinction of a regional language dialect are the absence of inputting the vocabulary into a dictionary, recording the phonological system to academic articles, and the absence of language enthusiasts or linguists who want to maintain the existence of a dialect in a community. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the phonological system in the Toboali dialect as the variant of the Malay language in the South Bangka Regency. The research is triggered by the decreasing use of regional languages in society and it purports to identify and describe the phonological system of the Toboali dialect. To do that, this study uses a qualitative method in which the researchers firstly collected data, then analyzed and classified the data, and finally drew a conclusion. The Swadesh list which consists of 250 vocabularies was utilized during the interview. The researchers obtained the Toboali dialect words by gesturing or pointing to objects and images so the informants were able to pronounce the words and then the phonetic transcription could be written. Thus, the data obtained are accurate because the language obtained was not delivered in Indonesian but is purely pronounced in the Toboali dialect. The results of this study indicate that there are 7 vowels: [?], [e], [o], [i], [?], [?], [a] and 19 consonants are found in the Toboali dialect: [b], [c], [d], [f], [g], [h], [j], [k], [l], [m], [n], [p], [r], [s], [t], [w], [y], [z], and [?].

Abstract

Multimodal inputs (both auditory and visual) in the forms of films and videos have long been used in teaching EFL listening comprehension. Previous studies have shown that listening while watching videos can significantly aid students’ comprehension. However, videos were rarely used as testing materials since they contained more than aural input so they did not ‘really’ test listening. This study explored the extent to which multimodal testing materials can be used in testing listening comprehension for EFL students and how the results would differ from that of mono modality testing materials. The participants were 100 students of the English Department, Bina Nusantara University (henceforth Binus) University Jakarta. The researchers gave them two kinds of tests: the video listening test (VLT) and audio listening test (ALT). The materials were two short videos from YouTube. The first test, ALT was given after the participants listened to the videos twice. On the contrary, VLT was administered after they watched the videos twice. To examine the differences in the effects of VLT or ALT on EFL students’ performance in listening comprehension, the data were analyzed quantitatively. The results indicate that students got better scores for VLT compared to ALT. The findings imply that students’ performance in listening comprehension is significantly improved with multimodal testing materials

Abstract

Translation results can be influenced by linguistic aspects. The objective of this study is to investigate several kinds of linguistic problems in the translation of Indonesian popular lyrics’ cover-songs from Indonesian into English. This study applies descriptive qualitative research. This research uses the document to collect data. The document used is cover songs from several popular singers and bands such as Andmesh Kamaleng, Anneth, Budi Doremi, Nineball, and Christian Bautista. There are seven popular lyrics’ cover songs that have been analyzed. The result analysis shows that translation songs activities cannot be separated from linguistic problems as in morphological, syntactical, phonological, and semantic. Morphologically, the problem is in the difference of the grammatical system related to singular and plural nouns. In phonological, the problem is in the differences between Indonesian and English syllables. As a result, the differences cause a different pronunciation and produce a different number of syllables. Syntactically, the problem is in constructing sentence elements. In a sentence, both in Indonesian and English at least will need a subject and a predicate orderly. Semantically, the problem is related to the meaning contained in a word or sentence, but equivalence may occur in translating to achieve an adequate degree of equivalence. When translating a song, a translator must pay close attention to the many components that contribute to the creation of a full product song. These components include song lyrics or text, as well as musical elements like melody and rhythm. In its formulation, the song lyric is a language that is not isolated from the musical principles such as the song's rhythm, melody, and harmony. In song translation, the sense and facts of the source texts are often changed. Therefore, the translator is faced with a choice of whether or not to translate such a lyric.

Abstract

The current study investigated a song lyric entitled “Lily” in terms of its generic structure to come up with the rhetorical strategies—how satanic tricks influence people through human greed. Lily belongs to a lyric considered a narrative poem. It is theorized that a narrative poem is a poem or possibly a lyric which consists of orientation, complication and resolution. In other words, a lyric is structured as such to produce rhetorical strategies (goals) which were analyzed employing Aristotle’s ethos, logos and pathos.  Meanwhile, in the complication analysis of Lily, not only did the study employ psychological theory but was also supported by social contexts to describe how satanic tricks were made use through human greed engineering in achieving the goal of negative thoughts generating. The findings indicate that human minds are in fact guided by both angels and satans. Angels guide any individual (Lily) to stay in track of the positive values while Satan whispers tricks to divert from the positive path toward the negative values by means of human greed. To confirm the findings, a survey was administered to 90 purposefully-selected teenagers in Semarang Municipality only to find that “Lily“ song lyrics failed to give any answer to the question whether or not she (Lily) can be saved despite her frequent calls for help.
