Abstract

Introduction: Acrylic denture in its use often results in fractures and one of the causes is due to poor mechanical resistance, especially to impact strength. Several methods to prevent broken acrylic, include the addition of fibers that function as reinforcement. There are 2 types of fibers, synthetic and natural fibers. Synthetic fibers are relatively expensive, so an alternative is needed, namely the use of natural fibers (Ramie and banana stem). This study purposed to determine the effect of adding ramie fiber and banana stem to impact and flexural strength of acrylic denture base. Methods: Experimental Laboratory, number of 60 samples consisted of 30 samples for flexural and impact tests. The sample was an acrylic plate; size 65x10x2.5 mm for Flexural Test and 80x10x4 mm (Flatwise impact method without notched) for Impact Test. The fiber concentration added was 1.6% of the sample weight. The sample consisted of 3 groups, namely control, the addition of ramie and banana stem fibers. Flexural test with UTM and Impact test with Charpy method. Results: Flexural and impact strength mean value of the ramie fiber group had the highest value (132.7459MPa; 7.9859 x 10-3Joule/mm2), followed by the control group (99.8499MPa; 4.2757 x 10-3Joule/mm2) and smallest value was in banana midrib fiber group (91.6865MPa; 3.0303 x 10-3Joule/mm2). The LSD test of significance(p) between each group in flexural and Impact Strength tests showed a significant difference (p<0.05). Pearson correlation test showed a significant positive correlation between the two tests. Conclusion: The addition of ramie fiber can increase the impact and flexural strength of denture acrylic, but it is different from the addition of banana midrib fiber because the presence of flavonoids (phenol compounds) it contains causes a decrease in the strength of denture acrylic.

Abstract

Introduction: Antibacterial effectiveness is the level of an antibacterial agent’s ability in controlling bacteria through growth-inhibiting or killing activities. A natural antibacterial agent that has the potential to be used as an alternative is beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) because it contains phenolic compounds, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and betalains. Antibacterial agents have been widely used as preventive for dental caries in children with the main causative bacteria being Streptococcus mutans. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness of beetroot extract against Streptococcus mutans. Methods: This study was in vitro experimental laboratory study with a post-test-only control group design. The maceration method used to obtain beetroot extract which will diluted into various concentrations, 12,500 μg/ml, 25,000 μg/ml, 50,000 μg/ml, and 100,000 μg/ml. Antibacterial effectiveness was tested by measuring the inhibition zone using disc diffusion, determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) using broth dilution, and the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) using agar dilution with 0,2% chlorhexidine gluconate as the positive control. Analysis of inhibition zone data was performed statistically using one-way ANOVA and Tukey Post Hoc. MIC and MBC tests were analyzed descriptively. Results: The results show all concentrations of beetroot extract were able to form an inhibition zone with the largest mean was 0.40 ± 0.05 mm, but still lower than the positive control. MIC and MBC of extract were 25,000 μg/ml and 50,000 μg/ml respectively. Conclusion: It can be concluded that beetroot extract has antibacterial effectiveness against Streptococcus mutans, therefore it can be used as a natural alternative for dental caries prevention.

Abstract

Introduction: Composite resin is a material that is often used to perform dental restorations, but it can cause a deficiency called polymerization shrinkage which can be overcome by preheating the composite material. In several studies, there are differences of opinion regarding using preheating techniques at 60oC to overcome polymerization shrinkage. Review: This article intends to analyze the level of microleakage on the restoration of adhesive indirectly as cementing materials with preheated composites. A total of 49 journals from PubMed, NCBI, BMC, Research gate, Z-library, EBSCO, Google Scholar, and other international journal websites were analyzed. Conclusion: The preheating method showed samples with heating of 60oC had statistically lower microleakage at cervical margins. However, preheating resulted in an increase in the contraction voltage of undesirable polymerization.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral cancer, also known as mouth cancer, is a malignancy that develops in any part of the oral cavity. Oral cancer can occur on the lips, tongue, gums, cheek, and mucosa of the palate. Oral cancer therapy includes chemotherapy and radiotherapy which can cause side effects, one of them is oral mucositis. Oral mucositis is one of the most common complications of cancer therapy. The main complaint of patients with mucositis is pain which is characterized by clinical features in the form of an erythema, bleeding, and ulceration. Mouthwash has been widely used as an antimicrobial compound and topical prophylactic agent against oral mucositis. The purpose of this literature is to explain the differences between mouthwashes used and the one that produce a better therapeutic effect. Review: Mouthwash used to treat mucositis in several studies in the literature is saline, 0.12% chlorhexidine and 5% bicarbonate, and propolis. The results showed that the use of saline only provided moisture to the ulcerative area but did not suppress any pain. While the combination of 0.12% chlorhexidine and 5% bicarbonate has a healing effect for five to seven days. The propolis mouthwash has a healing effect for 14 days but only for adult patients. Conclusion: The study of mouthwash had many advantages and disadvantages against oral mucositis, but the mouthwash with a combination of 0.12% chlorhexidine and 5% bicarbonate had a good analgesic effect for patient with oral cancer.

Abstract

Introduction: Mandibular condyle is the temporomandibular joint component that is most active and mainly receives loads when the mandible is functioning. The load received by the condyle can cause Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD). One of the etiology of TMD is the non-harmonious occlusion, as can be seen in Class I Angle Malocclusion which can affect the change in the condyle position from the center of the mandibular fossa. Panoramic radiographs examination can aid in the diagnosis of the condyle and measure the position in the condylar space. The purpose of this study was to determine the symmetries and the variations in positions of the mandibular condyles in Malocclusion Class I Angle patients and to determine their causes. Methods: This type of research is a quantitative, observational descriptive method, with a purposive sampling method. Samples were taken using the purposive sampling method from secondary data from patients with malocclusion who visit independent practice orthodontists from August 2017 - March 2020. Results: In the patient with Class I Angle Malocclusion, there were 14 (70%) with an asymmetric mandibular condyle position, 16 patients (80%) with right condyles anterior to the central fossa, and 15 patient (75%) with left condyles anterior to central fossa. Conclusion: Pathological occlusion in Class I malocclusion could also affect the mandibular condyle.
