Abstract

Research on da’wah has generally focused on sermons, communication strategies, and religious institutions, while the role of architecture as a medium of cultural da’wah has received relatively little conceptual and theoretical attention. This study aims to analyze how the architecture of the Cheng Ho Sriwijaya Mosque in Palembang functions as a symbolic medium in representing the acculturation of Islam within a multicultural society. This study is a qualitative research employing an experimental archaeology approach enriched by multidisciplinary perspectives, particularly studies in da’wah, architecture, and the semiotics of space. Data were collected through observations of architectural elements, analysis of documentation, and interviews with administrators and congregants. The results indicate that the mosque’s design represents da’wah communication through the integration of Chinese aesthetics, Malay cultural symbols, and Islamic spiritual values, manifested in the form of pagodas, color symbolism, and decorative motifs. These findings not only affirm the symbolic function of architecture as discussed in previous literature but also demonstrate that physical space operates as a non-verbal communication system that directly shapes the congregants’ religious experience. Theoretically, this study proposes the concept of cultural-architectural da’wah, a framework that positions architecture as an active medium in transmitting Islamic values through visual symbols and spatial experiences. Unlike cultural da’wah approaches that focus on social practices, this concept emphasizes the material-spatial dimension as an agent of religious communication. This study is expected to advance the development of da’wah studies, particularly in the field of culture-based da’wah communication, and to enrich the body of knowledge in Islamic architecture and cultural studies through the integration of spatial semiotics perspectives. These findings expand our understanding of Islamic acculturation by positioning architectural space as an active and communicative medium of da’wah; as a single case study, these findings are contextual in nature. Future research should test this framework comparatively across cultures to strengthen its conceptual validity.

Abstract

While Green Islam has attracted scholarly attention as a normative discourse, empirical research on how pesantren operationalize ecological resilience remains limited. This study examines the resilience processes of Pesantren Sirajul Huda and its surrounding community in Central Lombok in responding to climate-related challenges and post-pandemic socio-economic pressures. Employing an interpretive case study design and Kumpfer’s (1999) resilience framework, the study explores how resilience is constructed through the interaction of religious authority, social capital, ecological practices, and community participation. The findings reveal that resilience within the pesantren is not merely a technical response to environmental challenges but a religiously grounded social process. Religious authority, trust-based social relations embedded in the notion of barakah, and institutional participation function as key protective factors that mobilize collective action. Through ecological education, organic farming, and vocational programs, environmental stewardship is translated into practical adaptation strategies that support supplementary subsistence, livelihood diversification, and community well-being.The study extends Kumpfer’s framework by proposing the concept of charismatic resilience, defined as community resilience facilitated by the interaction of religious authority, trust-based social relationships, and institutional mechanisms of collective mobilization. These findings demonstrate how Islamic educational institutions can integrate religious values with climate adaptation practices to strengthen social well-being and adaptive capacity.

Abstract

This article reorganizes and strengthens the analysis of intercultural communication among Togale women in South Halmahera. The term Togale refers to a relational social category connecting Tobelo and Galela communities. It does not name a homogeneous ethnic block. The study examines how women negotiate gendered authority through adat, religion, kinship, livelihood, education, and post-conflict memory. The revised argument uses communication ethnography with a critical-postcolonial orientation. It also strengthens the discussion with recent literature on gender norms, women's empowerment, intercultural identity negotiation, indigenous relationality, religious communication, and peacebuilding. Field data came from interviews, participant observation, and documentation conducted in 2025. The analysis follows reflexive thematic analysis and uses Hymes's Speaking model, high-context communication, face negotiation theory, and communication accommodation theory. The findings show that Tobelo and Galela women share relational agency, but they use different symbolic resources. Tobelo women's public authority often grows through education, health work, church-related service, and family mediation. Galela women's public authority often grows through Islamic moral discourse, taklim participation, modesty norms, garden economy, and everyday da'wah. Adat practices such as salay, bobangu, sa'ali, and o dailako protect women's dignity while also regulating speech, mobility, and bodily conduct. The article develops the concept of indigenous gender negotiation to describe culturally grounded agency that works through tradition, religion, and relational ethics rather than outside them. This concept contributes to intercultural communication and multicultural da'wah studies by showing how women sustain moral identity, social coexistence, and practical authority in a post-conflict Muslim-Christian setting.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), has significantly transformed communication practices, including the field of da'wah. This study aims to examine the integration of Islamic communication ethics in the utilization of AI for da'wah in the digital era. This research employs a qualitative, sociological design to understand the social dynamics, communication patterns, and ethical implications of AI use in contemporary da'wah activities. The analysis is grounded in the perspectives of Islamic communication ethics and the sociology of communication, which emphasize the relationship among technological development, religious communication, and social values. Data were collected through a literature review of scholarly publications related to Islamic communication ethics, digital da'wah, and Artificial Intelligence. The findings indicate that AI offers significant opportunities to expand the reach, efficiency, interactivity, and personalization of da'wah messages. However, its implementation also raises sociological and ethical concerns, including the spread of misinformation, the distortion of religious messages, algorithmic bias, the weakening of religious authority, and the potential decline in humanistic interactions between da'i and mad'u. In this context, Islamic communication ethics, reflected in the principles of qaulan sadidan (truthfulness), qaulan layyinan (gentleness), qaulan balighan (effectiveness), and tabayyun (verification), offer an important normative framework for ensuring ethical and responsible AI-based da'wah practices. This study contributes to the field of Islamic Communication and Broadcasting by enriching the discourse on digital da'wah, communication ethics, and the sociological implications of emerging technologies in religious communication. The study concludes that integrating Islamic ethical values with technological innovation is essential for maintaining the effectiveness, credibility, and moral integrity of da'wah in the digital age, where AI serves as a supporting medium rather than a substitute for human religious guidance.

Abstract

This study discusses how the image of Muslim women who are commodified in television shows, namely Dua Hijab program on Trans 7. Dua Hijab are a show that provides information about fashion hijab references for Muslim women. This research is motivated by the media not only as a medium of communication and information, but also as a medium for ideological battles and also used as a power to regulate society. The community will tend to ignore the true meaning, the substantial meaning, and finally get caught up in the commodity fethism that makes people become consumptive. The problem in this study is how TRANS 7 forms commodification in the content of Dua Hijab television shows and How TRANS 7 shapes the image of women in the content of Dua Hijab television shows. In this study, researchers analyzed the Country Style episode of Dua Hijab shows using Roland Barthes' semiotics analysis. The results of this study indicate that Dua Hijab provides some fashion hijab references for Muslim women. Dua Hijab gives reference to fashion hijab in various fashion themes that are adapted to wearing the hijab and the smell of Islam. In this case, Dua Hijab portrayes Muslim women as being fashion sensitive and appearing stylish and fashionable. This is what Vincent Moscow has described as a commodification of content. Commodification prioritizes visible physical form, rather than substantially meaning. This causes the community to only be trapped in the apparent meaning of existence. The community will tend to ignore the true meaning, the substantial meaning, and finally get caught up in the commodity fethism that makes the society become consumptive

Abstract

Gafatar is a form of community upheaval in Indonesia in the current reformed era. Issues surrounding the ideology and the attempts of treason case became the problem that caused Gafatar to lose the masses of the public. Gafatar has the concept of food self-sufficiency that is then implemented in a peasant movement as its criticism of the government. To explain the dynamics of the Gafatar social movement, this work used McAdam et al theories about Political Opportunities, Mobilizing Structures, and Cultural Framings. The political opportunity arises from the distrust of government programs that have been offered to the people who are deemed ineffective. Mobilizing structures of Gafatar movement is manifested through the formation of the organization, forming a network of cooperation, and collective action. While cultural framing, created through the issues addressed to Gafatar causing the formation of negative stigma in society.

Abstract

Hanusz's interest in kretek was very large when he discovered that kretek was the most powerful commodity in Indonesia. His astonishment began when the economic crisis in 1998 struck Indonesia violently to overthrow the Suharto regime. However, the kretek industry remains upright and does not experience obscurity at all. In fact, it tends to continue to exist. Hanusz found that the strength of the kretek industry was because it was supported by strong socio-cultural conditions. Kretek became king in his own palace, namely Indonesia. Starting from raw materials, energy, technology and most importantly the market is in Indonesia itself. This condition triggers the kretek industry to survive for more than 100 years in Indonesia, and makes kretek appropriate to be labeled as the Indonesian heritage.

Abstract

This paper explores how Indonesian Muslim experience mobility in their life, particularly in Islamic da’wa aspect. Departs of theories of social mobility, this paper maps where, why, and how they manage that mobility, horizontally in geographical position or vertically in social identity. Among the earlier generation, in which Indonesia was under Dutch colonial government, that mobility was undoubtedly related to the existing colonialization influence. Mostly in this period, the mobility’s are in education, religion, economy, and military background. While in the later generation, post-1945, the mobility of Indonesia Muslim is going wider and higher. Though the background of their mobility is still not far from education, religion, and economy field, the reasons why do they mobile are more various. Nevertheless, both in “old” and “new” era, the mobility of Indonesian Muslim made a significant impact on spreading the teaching of Islam (da’wa) to where they migrated. References Baso, A. (2013).
