Abstract

Science teacher education, including biology, pays more attention to the development of teacher knowledge to improve classroom management and student learning. Research on PCK in biology education has been carried out. However, accurate evaluation and documentation of what PCK researchers have done in biology education and what future researchers can do to develop biology teachers’ PCK must be comprehensively informed. Therefore, through the literature review, this study aimed to investigate the role of the biology teachers’ PCK on the quality of learning. This study employed a qualitative approach with the literature review method. Activities in this study included identifying the literature criteria to be reviewed, carrying out the literature selection process, analyzing the contents of the literature, synthesizing, and extracting data from the literature. From this stage, 10 works of literature were obtained for review and synthesis. The results of the study conducted indicate that knowing biology content is important for biology teachers, but that is not enough to teach biology, PCK are needed to realize meaningful learning. Besides, it was found that research on vertical content knowledge in biology education is rarely conducted. This leads to opportunities for vertical content knowledge research in biology education to improve teachers’ PCK

Abstract

Several aspects of biology teaching affect teachers in carrying out their duties, such as their religious beliefs. This factor affects them in delivering lessons on controversial topics between science and religion. The cloning topic is one of the most controversial topics in terms of science and religion. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the religious aspect of cloning lessons in Islamic organizations-based school. A descriptive qualitative design was used to elaborate on three biology teachers by observing, documenting, and interviewing them. The observations were recorded with a video camera. Meanwhile, the interview with students, principals, and the teachers were used to triangulate the data, which were transcribed and descriptively analyzed. Therefore, the documentation was due to the gain in the lesson plan and school profile. The participants were three biology teachers of class XII in three high schools in South Tangerang, Banten Province, Indonesia. The results showed that the integration of religious values in the learning of cloning topics is not entirely determined by Islamic organizations, but the teachers' ability to understand and integrate the values in learning. This is a challenge for Islamic organization-based schools to evaluate the implementation of the school's vision and missions in the learning. Therefore, biology teachers need to be trained in Islamic schools to appropriately integrate the values of science and religion

Abstract

Studies on the implementation of the TPACK framework in the Embryology learning shows that, the wise integration of the elements contained in each component of TPACK can significantly enhance the Embryology concept mastery, but the best learning method to be applied has not been identified. The purpose of this study is to identify differences in the effectiveness of e-learning and blended-learning as an element in the TPK component of the TPACK framework toward the enhancement Embryology concept mastery of prospective Biology teachers. This study used Pre-experimental design of One-shot Case Study type, with subjects of 50 students. Changes in the Embryology concept mastery of the students in e-learning were determined through the calculation of difference in pretest and posttest-1 scores, whereas in blended learning were difference in pretest and posttest-2 scores. The significance of changes in the Embryology concept mastery was tested through the parametric z-test and the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test. The results shows that the enhancement of the Embyology concept mastery as the learning outcome using e-learning and blended learning was not significantly different. It can be concluded that Embryology learning within the TPACK framework can be implemented using e-learning method, and not necessarily using blended-learning
