Abstract

Managing dance movement elements is crucial for maintaining endurance and movement quality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of applying diaphragmatic breathing on dancer endurance. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory sequential design. The first phase, qualitative in nature, aimed to formulate hypotheses concerning the endurance issues faced by dancers in choreography courses. The second phase tested these hypotheses through experiments, incorporating control variables between two groups: Group 1, trained in dance movements using diaphragmatic breathing, and Group 2, solely trained in movements. The experiment took place at the Indonesian Institute of Cultural Arts in Aceh, with six female dancers enrolled in choreography classes randomly divided into two groups. None of the participants had prior experience with diaphragmatic breathing techniques while dancing. The study utilized a sphygmomanometer and oximetry for measurement. The endurance test involved dancing to a metronome for 5 minutes at tempos of 100, 110, and 120 without interruption. The results indicated that the respiratory frequency of dancers using diaphragmatic breathing was more stable compared to the group that did not employ this technique. These findings suggest that incorporating diaphragmatic breathing alternately while dancing can serve as a recommendation for maintaining dancers' endurance, particularly for students at the Indonesian Institute of Cultural Arts in Aceh.

Abstract

Cultural museums have always been considered guardians of culture, promoting the core concepts of cultural preservation and conservation. This paper delves into the challenges faced by two cultural museums from various perspectives and examines the transformation of museums in supporting Papuan culture through values centered on conservation and preservation, as gleaned from the experiences and views of the participants. This study is qualitative research that employs an interpretive strategy, with participants including museum personnel, cultural agencies in Papua Province, academics, and teachers from Cenderawasih University. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and literature studies. The study identified three themes: (1) Collection and space management, (2) Museum image, and (3) Capacity building and moral responsibility of human resources. To enhance cultural services, the study suggests that museums in Papua need to focus on strengthening collection management, enhancing visitor convenience, and providing increased staff support in the cultural field.

Abstract

The development of technology aligns with the evolution of information media, which is increasingly dynamic in contemporary times. Instagram serves as a social media platform employed by beauty influencers to disseminate information pertaining to beauty. Visual content showcasing diverse beauty reviews captivates a substantial female audience, resulting in millions of followers on Instagram. This study aims to interpret the conveyed meanings by Indonesian female beauty influencers, such as Tasya Farasya, Kesha Ratuliu, and Hanggini. The qualitative methodology employs social semiotic theory to extract meanings embedded in the text or discourse presented by each influencer, considering social and cultural perspectives. This research adopts a constructivist paradigm, emphasizing the production and exchange of meanings. The study analyzes the meaning behind the messages conveyed by each beauty influencer on social media. The images portrayed by Tasya Farasya, Kesha Ratuliu, and Hanggini exhibit distinct representations both interactively and compositionally. The interactive metaphoric function is evident in the endurance of their image, showcased through visually appealing content on Instagram photos. This results in the creation of a multimodal visual composition in the photos.

Abstract

Indonesia harbors diverse oral traditions, with a particular focus on Javanese traditions. Studies on oral traditions, especially those related to geguritan (poems), stories, and songs, often lean towards aesthetic analyses. However, there remains untapped potential for exploration, such as the exploration of local cultural elements underlying the contradictions in folklore. This article aims to elucidate these contradictions and delineate the paradigmatic concept of “anak polah bapa kepradhah” within the narrative of “Murwakala.” Conducted as a descriptive-qualitative study, this research employs Lévi-Strauss structuralism as a framework for interpreting, mapping and attributing meaning to empirical paradigms embedded in societal concepts. The objective is to address the contradictions and logical patterns inherent in society. Data for this study are derived from the observation of Javanese oral traditions related to wong sukerta. These observations are then juxtaposed with the narrative of “Murwakala,” as presented in the wayang performance of the ruwatan tradition, with a specific focus on the Javanese “anak polah bapa kepradhah” concept/value. The depth of meaning is further explored through the use of tables and diagrams. From a Lévi-Straussian perspective, it can be concluded that “Murwakala” and its associated value concept serve as logical tools capable of mapping paradigms, deciphering empirical contradictions (related to family relationships and power), and representing these dynamics in the cultural products and thoughts of Javanese society, both historically and in the contemporary context.

Abstract

Demping, as a tourist village located in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, has a variety of exciting tourism potential, both natural and religious. The lives of people who are predominantly Hindu still adhere to customs and various activities of religious traditions that are in synergy with their natural beauty. One thing that attracts attention is the public's trust in Sudamala's story. Sudamala tells the story of Durga, ugly and evil until she becomes the beautiful and kind Goddess Uma. Starting from this story, this research attempts to develop it into a children's theater performance by highlighting the values of the Sudamala story. The approach used is a deconstruction perspective from "sanggit" reinterpretation, namely, re-understanding the meanings contained in the story of the Sudamala text with a new meaning. Through this analysis, we can understand in depth the contents of Sudamala's literary works, which are then worked out skillfully in the theatrical work of Buta Grana Ireng children. In the end, the reinterpretation of sanggit in the theatrical performance of the Buta Grana Ireng children was generally able to increase the appreciation of the new theatrical work from the reinterpretation of the Sudamala story at the Sukuh temple and became a new performance work in the Demping Tourism Village.

Abstract

Sabrang village was once known for its one-of-a-kind rice variety, Rojolele Delanggu. Despite this cultural abundance, the communities are currently abandoning these villages because they are deemed uneconomically viable. This paper investigates the ways in which knowledge-sharing initiatives involving local governments, women farming associations that have historically led farming rituals, and students from diverse developing countries contribute to the restoration of the Rojolele rice planting pattern. The project invited 20 international students from various developing countries to participate in the In-Herit 2022 program. The program was launched to increase student and local interest in becoming village designers through a case study of the preservation of local Rojolele Delanggu rice in Sabrang Village. This activity was broken down into three sections: (1) learning from locals, (2) participatory learning and action, and (3) proposing ideas to locals. The outcomes of this three-day project were a mapping of opportunities, challenges, and resolutions pertaining to the Rojolele Delanggu preservation initiative. The majority of students were able to quickly fit in with the locals, apply PLA materials, and were paired with student mentors who knew about farming community development activities in Delanggu farming regions.

Abstract

Rejang Dayung is an ancient dance inherited from the ancestors, serving a ritualistic function at Pura Luhur Batukau. It is exclusively performed in Jaba Tengah or the media mandala (living room) during the Sinineban (closing) ceremony at Pura Luhur Batukau. Noteworthy for its straightforward expressions in movements, floor patterns, costumes, and accompaniment, this dance merits scholarly investigation. The objectives of this study are to elucidate the philosophical value of Rejang Dayung performance as an ancient dance inherited from Pura Luhur Batukau, examine the correlation between the philosophical value of Rejang Dayung and the societal beliefs of Pura Luhur Batukau, and expound upon the significance of Rejang Dayung's philosophical value based on the concepts of Satyam (truth), Shivam (holiness), and Sundaram (beauty). The authors employed a qualitative method, incorporating field observation and interview techniques to gather data and ascertain the initial presentation of Rejang Dayung. The study's findings unequivocally reveal the philosophical values of Rejang Dayung and the embodiment of the Tri Hita Karana teachings (Balinese concepts for creating harmony), which encompass harmonious relationships between humans and God, humans and fellow humans, and humans and the universe. The philosophical value of Rejang Dayung signifies a profound surrender to the magnificence of Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa, God the Greatest, manifested through the collective choreography in pairs, symbolizing the convergence of Shiva-Parwati energy. This convergence, perceived by the people of Pura Luhur Batukau as the guardian of harmony in the universe and its constituents, underscores the dance's cultural and spiritual significance.

Abstract

The development of storytelling motifs is enhanced through the Space-Time-Plane (STP) system, a drawing technique that integrates Image Way and Grammar principles. This system adeptly represents spatial and temporal dimensions, facilitating the creation of illustrative storytelling. Its application extends to translating images into meaning and vice versa, showcasing its impact on the textile sector. Notably, it drives the evolution of non-repetitive motif compositions embodying story concepts presented with flat design styling. Despite its successes, applying the STP system to motif development poses challenges, particularly when incorporating motifs into product patterns, leading to story truncation. Conversely, the non-repetitive motif composition using the STP system ensures the entire narrative is encapsulated in a single image, preventing any intersection of motifs. Motif development with the STP system draws inspiration mainly from modern sources despite its closer connection to traditional Indonesian art, particularly heroic stories like the epic La Galigo. While developments inspired by heroic narratives, including La Galigo, exist, their visualization remains confined to single-image models. The primary aim of this research is to generate an inspirational motif rooted in Indonesian traditional art, specifically the La Galigo epic. This is achieved through the utilization of the STP system, flat design styling, and repetitive composition or repeated illustration models. Employing an exploratory method, the research culminates in a repetitive motif composition, providing an alternative resolution to the issue of truncated motifs in non-repetitive composition models. The study aspires to contribute significantly to research focused on enriching the application of the STP system in visualizing stories through the manipulation of textile motif compositions.
