The problem of forest destruction really needs wise efforts of conservation. One of the efforts is to make use of society’s local wisdom. This study aims at examining the meaning, and values contained in the Manggarain Penti cultural ceremony in the context of forest conservation. To reach the objectives in question, interview, observation, and documentation were used to collect data which were subsequently interpreted following symbolic interaction theory. Findings revealed that aside from as a pillar of conservation, Penti also has several meanings, namely pillar of spiritual life (gratitude and request), forum for togetherness, a behavior controller, and as a means of self-recovery /repentance. Meanwhile, based on the meaning given, in addition to ecological value, Penti also has religious value and social value. Thus, penti is concerned with eco-socio- telogy Manggaraian conception toward the existence of nature.

Abstract

"Maduswara" is a new musical work whose creation is based on memoirs, or the journey of Peni Candra Rini's in interpreting the sounds she has encountered. The memoir in question is the composer's memory from childhood when he first knew the tembang macapat, which was later termed as wiji tembang. The song continues to develop into a sound journey when the artist grows up, enters a formal karawitan school, and becomes a tembang lecturer in the musical department at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Surakarta. The method of creation used is through several stages inspired by the composer's personal process, namely (1) reflection, (2) dialectics, (3) giving the tone of expression, (4) determining the form, (5) determining the medium, (6) compiling compositional musical notation, (7) transmedium, (8) practice, (9) improvisation. These steps of creation finally found a concept of nyarira lagu which was built on 5 indicators, namely; (1) language, (2) voice, (3) expression, (4) spirituality, and (5) improvisation

Abstract

The implementation of cultural events or festivals is part of efforts to revitalize the tourism sector in Surakarta City. The cultural event has succeeded in becoming a means of tourism development. The possibilities are present and have given birth to a performance program. The most significant event activities include Solo International Performing Arts (SIPA), Solo Batik  Carnival (SBC), and Solo Keroncong Festival (SKF). This research aims to know the governance principles for organizing a good festival or cultural event. Hopefully, understanding the principles of governance to make SIPA, SBC, and SKF become the flagship event in Surakarta city will serve as managerial knowledge useful in developing festivals and cultural events. It is important to study the management of SIPA, SBC, and SKF to find out the characteristics of leading event management so that they are included in the leading criteria. Research produces theoretical solutions, so that festival management has an adaptive and applicable management system for organizing events. The findings will be useful as a reference for other cultural events in the city of Solo. The research uses explanatory methods to find and create concepts that clarify SIPA, SBC, and SKF into three flagship events. Implementing this event is successful because it uses the combined governance between modern management and traditional management. For this reason, the results of this study have significant meaning because they can at least serve as a model in the organization of festivals and cultural events in other places

Abstract

The Bedhaya Sukma Raras dance by Hadawiyah Endah Utami,  presented at a gathering of choreographers, was inspired by the journey of human life as it moves towards death. The complementary forms of verbal and nonverbal components in Bedhaya Sukma Raras implicitly offer a concept encased in the aesthetic expression of the dance about human awareness of doing good throughout the transient life in this world, in order to welcome an afterlife that is immortal and full of joy. This research uses a qualitative methodology. The data collection strategies include a library study, interviews, a visual study of dance recordings, an audio study of music recordings, documentation and study of archives of verbal transcripts of literature about songs and vocabulary of dance movements. The results show that in principle human life must seek to preserve a balance between the world and the hereafter. This means that microcosmically, in fulfilling their daily needs, human beings must work hard, prioritize virtue, and pray for God’s guidance so that macrocosmically, in the afterlife their sins will be forgiven and they will enter the heaven of the Creator.

Abstract

This study discusses the Dramaturgy lecture process using a direct acting practice approach in a theater performance project where the city is positioned as object material, then interpreted and articulated by students through the process of creating theatrical performances. The creation process went through collaborative learning from research on cities, script writing, to creation of works, while Dramaturgy is placed as a theoretical approach in theater creation. This research is an effort to provide empirical experience to students in creating teamwork as a basis for film and television work patterns. This study uses a participatory action research method where the author is involved in all actions taken by film and television (FTV) students. This study found that through project: 1) students gain an understanding of dramaturgy as a science of analyzing drama with all kinds of derivatives related to it, 2) it is more effective to gain empirical experience as a real provision when creating film and Television works, 3) students can create works based on real cases. This research is expected to be able to strengthen KBK in FTV study program and become a treasure trove of intellectual property particularly in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and generally become a strategy for developing dramaturgy learning for Indonesia Society

Abstract

Batang Batik has unique motifs that originate from its historical background as part of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom, and its geographical area adjacent to the coastal batik center of Pekalongan. Batang Keratonan Batik is influenced by the Mataram Keraton Batik, while the Batang Pesisiran Batik is influenced by the Pekalongan Batik. The influence of the Mataram Keraton Batik can be seen from the use of sogan (brown) color, as well as geometric, and organic abstract motifs, while the influence of Pekalongan Batik in the use of bright colors and figurative organic motifs. Even though they have similar designs, there are also differences between the Batang Keratonan Batik and the Mataram Keraton Batik, as well as between the Batang Pesisiran Batik and the Pekalongan Batik. The similarities and differences in visual styles are interesting to study because they show the dominance of power over aesthetic tastes from Pierre Bourdieu's concept; and the phenomenon of mimicry from the STORM theory from the study of social psychology. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with purposive samples originating from the Pisan Bali motif on 2 pieces of Batang Keratonan Batik and 1 piece of Mataram Keraton Batik, as well as floral and bird motifs on 1 piece of Batang Pesisiran Batik, 1 piece of Rifa'iyah Batik, and Pekalongan Batik. To reveal the similarities and differences in batik designs, we conducted a visual content analysis of color, motifs, execution of forms, layout, and composition. Furthermore, the concept of Pierre Bourdieu and the STORM mimicry theory were used to reveal the causes of the similarities and differences in visual styles of the purposive samples. The results of the analysis show that the similarities in visual style are due to the influence of power domination on aesthetic tastes in a field, and mimicry is done to gain social advantage, while the differences come from heterodoxy which occurs due to changes in the constellation of power in the social field.
