Abstract

Managing dance movement elements is crucial for maintaining endurance and movement quality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of applying diaphragmatic breathing on dancer endurance. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory sequential design. The first phase, qualitative in nature, aimed to formulate hypotheses concerning the endurance issues faced by dancers in choreography courses. The second phase tested these hypotheses through experiments, incorporating control variables between two groups: Group 1, trained in dance movements using diaphragmatic breathing, and Group 2, solely trained in movements. The experiment took place at the Indonesian Institute of Cultural Arts in Aceh, with six female dancers enrolled in choreography classes randomly divided into two groups. None of the participants had prior experience with diaphragmatic breathing techniques while dancing. The study utilized a sphygmomanometer and oximetry for measurement. The endurance test involved dancing to a metronome for 5 minutes at tempos of 100, 110, and 120 without interruption. The results indicated that the respiratory frequency of dancers using diaphragmatic breathing was more stable compared to the group that did not employ this technique. These findings suggest that incorporating diaphragmatic breathing alternately while dancing can serve as a recommendation for maintaining dancers' endurance, particularly for students at the Indonesian Institute of Cultural Arts in Aceh.

Abstract

This paper discusses the aesthetics of virtual wayang performances by puppeteers. The problems studied are: (1) why puppeteers have a new tendency to perform virtual wayang; and (2) the aesthetic style of the virtual wayang performances. Data collection methods by interviews with puppeteers, literature studies about virtual wayang, and observations of wayang virtual performances by puppeteers were analyzed by aesthetic theory. The study results showed that puppeteers used digital platforms to maintain their profession's continuity and economic living conditions. The tendency of virtual wayang to give rise to an aesthetic style of digital puppets is known as aesthetics of taste, with the orientation of wayang performance to meet public tastes. The conclusion results state that the aesthetic style of the virtual wayang performance: (1) the camera as a representation of the audience's eyes; (2) puppeteers are required to be creative, innovative, and productive; (3) the audience has the freedom to determine their tastes; and (4) the importance of collaboration that must be carried out by the puppeteer.

Abstract

Surakarta, a city formerly under the rule of the New Mataram dynasty established by Paku Buwana II in 1746, inherited a wealth of arts which led to its designation as a cultural center. Jumenengan is a cultural legacy in the form of a ceremony, held annually in the Javanese month of Ruwah, on the day of Selasa Kliwon, or Anggara Kasih, to celebrate the anniversary of the coronation of the king of Kasunanan Surakarta. The main prerequisite of the Jumenengan ceremony is the performance of the Bedhaya Ketawang dance, which provides legitimacy for the ceremony. The position of the Bedhaya Ketawang dance in the Jumenengan ceremony is as an heirloom with magical, sacred, prestigious value. Its presence gives legitimacy and credibility to the continued power of the king. As a cultural legacy, the Bedhaya Ketawang dance contains life values that can be absorbed both implicitly and explicitly. These include spiritual values, values of love for the natural environment, ethical values, aesthetic values, and values of love, all of which are relevant to the life of society today. The relevance of these values provides encouragement and motivation to build and develop the character of the Indonesian nation today as a society of faith, devotion to God, noble character, healthy knowledge, skill, creativity, independence, democracy, and responsibility.

Abstract

This research is a case study of the performance of the offering dance at the ISI Surakarta 51st Dies Natalis Ceremony (held on July 15th, 2015) by seven dancers. The seven dancers previously acted as leaders of the Senate procession, after the members of the senate sat in their seats, they danced to express the character of Bima so that it could be said that the dance was part of the ceremonial event. The sesaji dance is an expression of Bima's character, which in Javanese collective knowledge is a complex system of symbols. This phenomenon is approached through the constructivism paradigm, especially from the point of view of interpretivism where the methodological mission is to elaborate a reflective events. The research question posed is what constitutes a gift or alms in the Sapta Cipta Rasa Tunggal – title of that dance — as offering dance considering that offerings lexico-etymologically means giving alms or charity. Triangulative data as objects of observation are videos of dance performances via the YouTube platform, interviews with source persons, and library data. The conclusions drawn are: 1) this sesaji dance is a form of mnemonic (kinetic mnemonic) in the form of motion as a tool for reflective memory; 2) offering dance and imitation of the imaginary character in the kind of the Bima containing doxa – knowledge that does not need to be verified – that the ethical attitudes that humans should have are teteg, tatag, teguh, tanggon, and tanggap.

Abstract

Cultural museums have always been considered guardians of culture, promoting the core concepts of cultural preservation and conservation. This paper delves into the challenges faced by two cultural museums from various perspectives and examines the transformation of museums in supporting Papuan culture through values centered on conservation and preservation, as gleaned from the experiences and views of the participants. This study is qualitative research that employs an interpretive strategy, with participants including museum personnel, cultural agencies in Papua Province, academics, and teachers from Cenderawasih University. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and literature studies. The study identified three themes: (1) Collection and space management, (2) Museum image, and (3) Capacity building and moral responsibility of human resources. To enhance cultural services, the study suggests that museums in Papua need to focus on strengthening collection management, enhancing visitor convenience, and providing increased staff support in the cultural field.

Abstract

The development of technology aligns with the evolution of information media, which is increasingly dynamic in contemporary times. Instagram serves as a social media platform employed by beauty influencers to disseminate information pertaining to beauty. Visual content showcasing diverse beauty reviews captivates a substantial female audience, resulting in millions of followers on Instagram. This study aims to interpret the conveyed meanings by Indonesian female beauty influencers, such as Tasya Farasya, Kesha Ratuliu, and Hanggini. The qualitative methodology employs social semiotic theory to extract meanings embedded in the text or discourse presented by each influencer, considering social and cultural perspectives. This research adopts a constructivist paradigm, emphasizing the production and exchange of meanings. The study analyzes the meaning behind the messages conveyed by each beauty influencer on social media. The images portrayed by Tasya Farasya, Kesha Ratuliu, and Hanggini exhibit distinct representations both interactively and compositionally. The interactive metaphoric function is evident in the endurance of their image, showcased through visually appealing content on Instagram photos. This results in the creation of a multimodal visual composition in the photos.

Abstract

Indonesia harbors diverse oral traditions, with a particular focus on Javanese traditions. Studies on oral traditions, especially those related to geguritan (poems), stories, and songs, often lean towards aesthetic analyses. However, there remains untapped potential for exploration, such as the exploration of local cultural elements underlying the contradictions in folklore. This article aims to elucidate these contradictions and delineate the paradigmatic concept of “anak polah bapa kepradhah” within the narrative of “Murwakala.” Conducted as a descriptive-qualitative study, this research employs Lévi-Strauss structuralism as a framework for interpreting, mapping and attributing meaning to empirical paradigms embedded in societal concepts. The objective is to address the contradictions and logical patterns inherent in society. Data for this study are derived from the observation of Javanese oral traditions related to wong sukerta. These observations are then juxtaposed with the narrative of “Murwakala,” as presented in the wayang performance of the ruwatan tradition, with a specific focus on the Javanese “anak polah bapa kepradhah” concept/value. The depth of meaning is further explored through the use of tables and diagrams. From a Lévi-Straussian perspective, it can be concluded that “Murwakala” and its associated value concept serve as logical tools capable of mapping paradigms, deciphering empirical contradictions (related to family relationships and power), and representing these dynamics in the cultural products and thoughts of Javanese society, both historically and in the contemporary context.
