Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has claimed hundreds of thousands of human lives in various parts of the world. As an authoritative body, the World Health Organization (henceforth WHO) has made efforts to prevent the Covid-19 outbreak by releasing appealing messages through posters. The study aims to to explore the types of linguistic elements used in the WHO posters and to uncover the meanings of the elements to express the messages. The study employed descriptive qualitative research using a semio-pragmatic analysis framework. The data were presented in the form of linguistic elements in posters themed #HealthyAtHome, taken from the World Health Organization’s official website. The study found two linguistic elements as poster-forming elements, namely visual and verbal elements. Through icons, indexes, and symbols, visual elements reinforce the meaning of the poster’s theme so that it is easily understood by readers. Meanwhile, verbal elements are realized by the directive speech to facilitate understanding of the intended message as well as indirective speech to consider politeness in delivering the messages. The implication of this study is to increase public knowledge and awareness on the best health practices that can be performed at home during the pandemic.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. Border area as a front line of a country needs special attention from the government of that country. Most of the domestic problems experienced by a country come from the border. Human and drugs trafficking, also illegal timber transactions are examples of problems that still occur in Indonesia nowadays especially located in Kepulauan Riau Province. This study aims to describe the Integrated Border Management based on European Commission carried out in Indonesia, especially at the country border in Kepulauan Riau Province, Indonesia. By using the post-positivistic paradigm, this study uses interviews and documentation as data collection techniques. Interviews were conducted to actors, both central and regional, such as the Deputy for Border Management (BNPP-RI), the Head of the BNPP Planning and Cooperation Bureau, the Head of the Riau Islands Province Government Bureau and his staff, the Head of Local Development Planning Agency of Batam City, Natuna Regency. The results showed that the state border managers at the central, provincial, and regency/city governments have different institutions which result in differences in personnel procedures, finances, and resource allocation. The concept of Integrated border management needs to be adjusted to the concept considering the geographical characteristics of Indonesia, which has sea and land borders.

Abstract

The media played a central role in communication between people, including religious matters. In religious tourism, there were scouting activities between the committee, ustadz, and congregation in the context of worship that was carried out well. The most prominent in this religious tourism was the pilgrimage and umrah. Thus, there were many Hajj and Umrah communities in a Muslim-majority country like Indonesia. This study aims to determine the role of social media in religious tourism guidance and marketing activities. This study used a micro-sociological analysis of qualitative data from activities at one of the Hajj and Umrah guidance centers in Bandung, Indonesia. Using social network analysis, it was found that social media’s role was essential to disseminate information between Hajj and Umrah guidance institutions and their congregations. The use of Facebook for the profile of the guidance institution was beneficial for pilgrims to understand the various opportunities and obstacles that exist in the Hajj/Umrah pilgrimage. WhatsApp was the most frequently used to communicate interactively with the congregation so the clerics and committees. Social media is quite helpful in marketing when the assembly connects with friends and family in telling their experiences when worshiping in Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.
