Abstract

'Creativity', i.e. the human ability and need to make new meaning, can help learners to destabilise, explore and transform their langrage, a desirable goal in language teaching. In this talk, I propose a 'creative' view of language as a tool for creating new ideas and meaning. In order to increase the learner's desire to explore and retrieve less accessible language within and beyond their Zone of Proximal Development, I will propose two conditions for creative language learning tasks: 1 creating the need to say something new and 2. setting up constraints in language learning tasks in order to encourage learners to explore and transform their language. Too much freedom can restrict possibilities for learners to explore and broaden their language repertoire as learners may retrieve safe options and make familiar choices.

Abstract

This research aims at discovering the patterns of mistakes made by his students in interpreting novels’ dialogues that lead to misinterpretation. Those patterns then are modified by discourse analysis. During his experience teaching critical reading class, moreover, they were still weak to comprehend the dialogues; therefore, their comprehension went wrong. Consequently, they could not connect information among sentences which are related to each other. Accordingly, the ability to link among ideas in dialogues is badly needed for students to support their arguments in analyzing text. For that reason, the researcher offers the study of discourse analysis as one of the alternative solution. The researcher takes students of critical reading class as its research object while he uses his students’ works as his research source of the data. The students’ works contain misinterpretation through novels’ dialogues. Then, those works are documented as the data source to observe.  As this study is qualitative, the researcher turns out to be the data instrument. The researcher himself determines how the data are accomplished to observe then to interpret. They were chosen based on research purpose; that is, modifying students’ misinterpretations using discourse analysis. It was carried out in order to make the analysis can be more meaningful since the researcher himself selected the data that are possible to support the research purpose; therefore, this research uses purposeful sampling. The data shows that the students do not use discourse context in their analysis such as reference, presupposition, implicature, and inference since dialogues in the novels consist of embedded aspects which is absolutely tied with context surrounding the sentences.  To overcome those problems, therefore, the researcher provides discourse analysis involving the discourse contexts that will make analysis more accurate. Moreover, discourse analysis helps students to be more critical. Thus, their reading comprehension improves significantly because they analyze from overall views.

Abstract

The real language condition in Indonesia is that most learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) have already had and communicated in their own mother tongues and bahasa Indonesia as the national language. For many reasons, the grammar instruction of EFL is essential to build grammatical competency, language awareness, and communicative ability. Therefore, the instructional processes of English grammar have an important role in order to provide the learners with sufficient grammatical competency and language awareness on English. The grammatical problems made by the students in written communication are not relatively allowed, then. The students’ grammatical problems in writing should be initially corrected and academically improved. This paper, developed based on a part of research results conducted in 2013/2014 academic year at the English Department of FKIP Universitas Bung Hatta, Padang, discusses the forms and types of students’ grammatical problems in writing simple paragraphs. In addition, the discussion continues to analyze whether the grammatical problems found in the learners’ simple paragraphs can be academically assigned as lack of grammatical competency and/or their own language carelessness. The data are students’ grammatical problems found in their written simple paragraphs. The data analysis may reasonably come to the conclusion that most of the grammatical problems belong to student’s lack of grammatical competency and the others to their language carelessness.

Abstract

The role of grammar cannot be ignored in the language use. The ungrammatical use of language may result in the misunderstanding betrween the speaker (also the writer) and the listener (also the reader) because grammar also determines the meaning of the language used. Considering its important role, the designers of the SMP and SMA curricula still include the grammar as one of the language features in the curricula. Unfortunately, from long observations in many Micro Teaching classes, it has been found that students still do several problems in teaching grammar deviating from the theory. It seems that it is difficult for the students to practice the theory suggested. This paper discusses the problems done by the Micro Teaching students in the Micro Teaching practice of teaching the grammar of English.
