Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to explain ‘irfâniy as a method for human beings to acquire knowledge through the intuition of conscience as did the Sufis through the path of Sufism in the teachings of Islam. Man as a battle creature given the highest degree by God, in addition to the sense and sense, also given the conscience to feel things that are not real in concrete and something that is outside the logic. ‘Irfâniy as a method of knowledge epistemology can lead man to a spiritual life close to God. The inner nature of the knowledge of ‘irfâniy has led man to an immaterial life which is sublime in the true life of the world. The path of Sufism’s life which is done by the ‘irfâniy method is able to place the life of ma‘rifat for man, that is, the highest level of life associated with a very close relationship with God. There are several steps that must be taken by humans to achieve ‘irfâniy knowledge, starting from the preparation stage, acceptance, formation and disclosure. Therefore, the subjective nature of ‘irfâniy knowledge, then the quality of knowledge depends on the human ability to perform by the mind. ‘Irfâniy as a form of human inner knowledge is influenced by the empirical and logical experience and spiritual life of the deity of man, so that knowledge ‘irfâniy is direct, whole, fixed and comprehensive. Humans with ‘irfâniy method can reach God truth that is absolute and essential.

Abstract

This article aims at promoting an appropriate term to depict the substantial meaning of Islamic civilization. Even though there are various terms in Arabic that refer to the meaning of civilization, such as hadârah, tsaqâfah, ‘umrân, the term that substantially compatible with Islam is tamaddun. From a linguistic perspective the root of tamaddun can be traced back to the word dîn, meaning religion. In this case the relation between civilization in the form of scientific movement and political authority with religion is considerably clearer and even provable with historical facts. From the time of the Prophet Muhammad, Umayyad Caliphate, Abbasid Caliphate, until the Ottoman Caliphate the relationship of religion and civilization was manifested. In Islamic history, when Islam entered to a region, the knowledge there will grow rapidly so as to bring prosperity and welfare. When Islam expanded its territory, it did three important stages: First, the expansion of political power dominated by military forces; second, the spreading of religion to the society such Islamic preaching and scientific activity based on al-Qur’an was dominated. Here, the people tried to integrate the teaching of al-Qur’an with the science that comes from other civilizations, especially Greek, Indian, and Persian; third is the spreading of Arabic language to become the official language of science and communication. These three stages proved that the widespread political power in Islamic history was always based on dîn and the development of science, which in turn, becomes civilization of science as well as religion, which defines tamaddun. Therefore, Islam accepted by any nation either non-Muslim or non-Arab for it departed from rational dîn which develops into tamaddun.

Abstract

Is there such a thing called “Islamic philosophy”? If there is one, what is it? What does it mean for philosophy to be Islamic? How does Islamic philosophy differ from non-Islamic one? Why do some Muslim scholars reject philosophy, ban its instruction, and even scorn its proponents? The present article will address all these questions and seeks to offer a balanced perspective on controversial issues pertaining to philosophy in Islamic intellectual context, drawing upon authoritative, primary sources. The first section deals with definition and terminology, including the disagreement among scholars over which of these is the best appellation: ‘Islamic philosophy’, ’Muslim philosophy’, or ’Arabic philosophy’. This will be followed by a discussion of the main sources of Islamic philosophy and its impacts, as well as the aims and benefits of studying philosophy according to its exponents. The final section provides a critical appraisal of the arguments for and against philosophy that have been put forward by its defenders and its critics. Furthermore, the article also discusses three current approaches to Islamic philosophy, namely the mystical- hermeneutical such as advocated by Leo Strauss and Henry Corbin, the historical- philological study such as practiced Richard Walzer and Dimitri Gutas, and the philosophical-analytical approach such as espoused by Oliver Leaman and Lenn E. Goodman. A final word about the challenges and prospect of Islamic philosophical studies is in order, taking into account recent developments in various parts of the world following revival of interest in Avicenna, Averroes and al-Ghazali.

Abstract

Science and technology bring people to a more advanced life. However, this modern life can not be separated from the serious problems that threaten mankind. Technological advances are widely misused so as to cause damage and destruction. Technology that originally aims to solve the problems of mankind, turned into the problem itself. Modern science legitimizes any action in society, even if it is contradict to the values and norms of truth. If examined carefully, this issue departs from the worldview that underlie the science. West and Islam have different ways of understanding the nature of science, its epistemology, and its usefulness. In Islam, the physical and metaphysical felds are indistinguishable, while the West distinguishes them. The West with its secularized worldview regards religious values as unimportant. This is actually inseparable from the trauma of Western society towards religion (Christian) in the past. This article tries to answer the problems posed by modern science. The study of this article begins by discussing what modern science is and its relation to European history. From there the study found that the fundamental problem lies in the realm of philosophy of science. At the end the researcher offers “Islamization or integration” of religion and technology, in answer to the problems posed by modern Western science. From this, it is expected to create a sustainable civilization, because science is no longer a threat to the survival of human life.

In the view of Qardhawi, Islam has practiced democracy to lay on the principle and norms of democracy itself. A Muslimah supports democracy with consideration that democracy is a mechanical authority to actualize the political principles of Islam, such as in the leadership election, organizational consultation, a media of commanding the truth and avoiding the false, against tyrannies and avoiding the vise , particularly at the unbelieving in Allah. Even though, the political participation of a Muslimah has faced many obstacles external as well as internally.

Abstract

Religion does not come at once as can be seen today. Religion comes with the following level of human’s intellectual development and condition. So that, religion is always suitable to human in all ages and times. The process and development of religion can be traced through the history of the religion itself such as Prophet Adam, as to which is perpetuated by the Quran, which is very simple and not with a lot of roles of shari’ah. Shari’ah brought by the prophets are increasingly developed so created religion as brought by Prophet Muhammad which we can see his teachings today. Nevertheless, the Prophets’ struggle in carrying and introducing religion to bring the people to a better life is not simple. The prophets had to fight hard and even risked their life themselves. But they are not an ordinary man. They are an elected man to run the heavy duty. They have the durability and above all suffering far beyond what ordinarily people do. The process of proselytizing of prophets always shows the resilience and tremendous fortitude. Thus the heavy duty that God gave to them can be done well. However, not all of the prophets have the same success. The series of prophets is closed with the advent of Prophet Muhammad with Islam. This paper focuses on how the development of religion until it becomes a perfect religion passing through the prophets in a very long period of time.
