Abstract

This article contributes to the analysis of the “madani society” discourse and its development in Indonesia as a form of a struggle and dialectic of intellectual Muslim to interpret Islamic teachings in its relationship to modern life, especially to politics and nationality problems. The Islamic basic concept about the democratic principles such as justice, equality, freedom and deliberation, including the attitudes of tolerance and recognition of human rights actually had been developed well over the Apostles and the Khilafat ‘al-Rashidin political and social life. This Islamic political concept is tried to be reconstructed back by Muslim intellectuals with the idea of madani community. The presence of this discourse in Indonesia seems externally to be affected by the discourse of civil society that had been becoming a global currents of thought since the 1990s, and internally cannot be separated from the condition of the nation at that time, especially the unavailability of public space, besides as the impact of the model static approach developed in the New Order political reality.

Abstract

This article addresses issues related to the interfaith dialogue, focusing on the historical context from which it emerged and uncovering the tacit assumptions underlying the idea. It is argued that interfaith dialogue is part and parcel of the Christian mission which seeks to promote inclusivism but also eventually leads to pluralism and relativism. In addition, the article also discusses the three approaches taken by Muslims throughout centuries in dealing with people of other faiths. Abstract

Factually, liberalism in social sciences and politics in Western Civilization has marginalized religion or separated religion from social lives and politics step by step. When liberalism became parts of religious thought of Christianity, Catholic and Protestant, it had subordinated the church under the political interest and humanism, and reduced its theological role in almost all aspects of social lives. Therefore, in liberalism of religious thought, the main problem to be argued is the concept of God (Theology) then doctrine and religious dogma. After that, liberalism argued and separated the relationship between religion and politics (Secularism). Finally, liberalism of religious thought became secularism, and influenced by the wave of postmodernism thought which enhances pluralism, equality and relativism. In its expansive movement, through globalization, modernization, and westernization, the West subsequently becomes the challenge of all nations and other civilization include Islam. Specifically, Western Civilization could be seen from three cultural sources; missionaries, orientalism, and colonialism. These three movements essentially disseminate the principle or element of Western way of life.

Abstract

Husserl has introduced intuitive consciousness in order to see directly the complexity and reality without devise and perspective. In Western thought, Husserl’s view is considered as strange up to the present time. The basic problem of Suhrawardi is similar with Husserl, indeed validity of knowledge, in which the only authority is at the Peripatetic logic. The main characteristics of this scientific model are the truth of syllogism, proposition, concept and problem of definition. This article tries to relate between Husserl’s view on intuitionalism and Suhrawardi’s view on illumination, even still based on preliminary experiment. The unity of Husserl and Suhrawardi seems to be gigantic power. “Intuitionalism under the light of God.” Can be an alternative. On the other hand, it also may be as a solution for the ontological view on reality which nowadays tend to be materialistic and mechanical. The view of this mechanical materialistic factually raises various crises on the modern life. Ontologically, the light of Intuitionalism can be the basis of the development of thought at different aspects of life, such as ethic, esthetic, anthropology, epistemology, etc.

Ibn Rusyd’s critics in this case are in order to purify Aristotle’s philosophy from infiltration and distorted ideas. So then he could present the philosophy of Aristotle genuinely. In this article, the writer wishes to present the analysis of Ibn Rusyd on the views of Al-Farabi, Ibn Sina and Al-Ghazali. Among the philosophers except al-Ghazali, he criticized both two from their views on the existence of God through the theory of wajib al-wujud (necessary being) and mumkin al-wujud (possible being). Ibnu Rusyd also rejected the theory on emanation of al-Farabi and Ibn Sina, because not derived from Aristotle. Ibn Rusyd concerned upon the al-Ghazalis Tahafut Al-Falasifah (Incoherence of the Philosophers) not represented all philosophers views, but the views of philosophers on Neo-Platonic which destroys the thought of Aristotle. In this point Ibn Rusyd judges, that Al-Ghazali’s criticism is incoherence.
