Abstract

The objective of this paper is to examine how ESL student teachers identify their own learning needs, analyse, evaluate and expand their professional engagement as an individual or as a community of practice (CoP) through reflective writing. In addition, the written discourses of their reflective entries are studied to illuminate the macro and micro elements of the reflective entries. This study mainly employs a qualitative study with some descriptive quantitative analysis. The participants are 27 ESL student teachers in their 6th semester. The instrument used is primarily the student teachers reflective entries and the content analysis was carried out to analyse for convergent and divergent ideas which were then generated into categories and themes based on the research questions stipulated. The findings revealed that the reflective entries have addressed some pertinent issues related to the student teachers’ learning needs and how they have extended their understanding of those issues.    The reflective entries discourses have exhibited in-depth professional thinking which served as a platform for student teachers to meta-cognitively think about teaching. This study implicates the importance of such professional learning engagement activity in order to assist student teachers to be thinking about teaching.

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the selection of outstanding teachers to the determination ranking on professional and intellectual managerial performances. A qualitative research was used where 91 teachers were selected based on the level of education from kindergarten to secondary school and vocational education.  The results showed there are three data categories of professional and managerial performances of teachers, namely, high, medium and low. The three categories of data describe the various factors that affect the ability of the management professional and intellectual teachers among the demands of interpersonal of the profession, carrying out the task of teaching a high quality produces professional development, encouragement and motivation from leaders in the school, and a special confidence in the development of professional, as well as using the four dimensions (the assessment of emotion-self, appraisal of emotions of others, use of emotion, and emotion regulation) in improving the performance of teachers and the determination of the personal goals of the teacher in the academic achievement.

Abstract

Considering the students’ emotion is essential in having the students to learn. Most Minangkabaunese students do not like being dictated for any activities with a thousand words. This paper is aimed at finding out some techniques of using intertextuality to balance lecturer-students’ power relations when communicating learning tasks. This research is qualitative with content analysis. Data were collected from six lecturers, teaching at Sekolah Tinggi Keguruandan Ilmu Pendidikan, Persatuan Guru Republik Indonesia (STKIP PGRI), selected purposively. Techniques of observation and video recording were used in collecting data. The discourse was transcribed and categorized into some techniques of using examples based on the content called content analysis.A contextual analysis was used to show lecturer-students’ power relations and formulated proposition.   Findings show that the techniques of using intertextuality includeShowing Techniques of Doing Tasks (STDT), Giving Example of the Task Topic (GETT), and UERS. Using STDT  had an impact on students’ readiness to learn. Meanwhile, Using GETT enhances students’ language development. Finally, Using Example of Real Situations (UERS)  gives students’ opportunity to have a learning experience. Moreover, the techniquescause the lecturer and students to have a balanced power relation. The findings are significant for teachers or lecturers as guidance to communicate with students efficiently and effectively. They are expected not to dominate communication when interacting with them, especially to those who have excessive individualism. Other researchers who are interested in studying this topic are expected to be inspired to research this area viewed from other viewpoints.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the structure and function of the oral poetry Meurukon. This research uses a qualitative approach. The source of research data is the text Meurukon edited by Rahman (2010), Harun (2012), text and recording of Meurukon at the 7th Aceh Culture Event (Huda, 2018). The research data are all sequences relating to the structure and function of Meurukon. Data is collected by using the techniques of listening, recording, and reading. The research instrument consisted of handy cam, stationery, and the researchers themselves. Data analysis was conducted through five stages. The stages are carefully and critically reading Meurukon text, sorting data into Meurukon structure and function, analyzing data comprehensively, verifying research results, and concluding research results. The results of the study indicate that the Meurukon structure includes the opening part which consists of greetings and preface. It also includes the content section which consists of discussions on religious issues, especially about bismillah, problems with prayer, water problems, and problems of faith (aqeedah). Then, the structure of Meurokon is the closing that concern on apology and farewell. Last, the Meurukon functions are religious learning, entertainment, and interactive-dialogical learning model.

Abstract

The study aims to produce feasible a contemplation-based learning model based on the aspect of validity and practicality for Biology prospective teachers. Research and development (RD) using ADDIE model was used where the participants in this study were three Biology Education lecturers, three experts, and 35 students who enroll at first semester at Biology Education department in Batusangkar State Islamic Institute (IAIN) as experimental subjects. The instruments used is observation, interview and questionnaire. Means and standard deviations were calculated for finding the level of validity and practicality of the prototype. The results showed that contemplation-based biology learning model meet the characteristics of the learning model and characteristic of contemplation. The contemplative approaches used through deep reading essays and paid attention to figures related to the subject matter of General Biology courses. The values cultivated are values contained in the subject matter. The values that contained in the material are islamic values, it is alasma’ ul husna. The contemplation-based learning model developed is feasible to be applied in the biology classroom with the most valid and very practical category. Thus, the contemplation-based learning model is a solution for overcoming the gap of serving science with self-knowledge and is an alternative learning model to integrate science and religion at Biology Education Department.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a statistical module for the students of Islamic colleges and universities in South Tapanuli. Research and Development (RD) with Instructional Development Institute (IDI) model was implemented. This research consists of three stages, namely, the front-end analysis stage, the prototype stage, and the assessment stage. The results of the study showed that the statistical module that was designed was valid including content validity and construct. The result also showed the use of statistical modules in the learning process does not experience significant obstacles, in the practical sense of their use according to the assessments of observers and students and lecturers. It indicated that the statistical module has been effective which is shown from the results of observations on the implementation of the learning process, the results of interviews with lecturers and students, as well as higher student learning outcomes using modules in learning.

Abstract

The study aims to determine the strategy used in forming religious characters on the deaf children in Elemantary Special School. A qualitative method was used where the data taken from observation, interview and document analysis. The result showed that the learning strategy of Islamic religious education in the development of morals for children with special needs in special schools is by implementing expository strategy, adding hours of study using the habituation method. The finding also showed that the supporting factors in the learning process to form moral guidance are the involvement of school’s principal who is very concern on the development of students’ morals; the teachers who have great patience in dealing with children with special needs. Then, it was also found that there were some inhibiting factors that faced by the school. They were on the absence of a special curriculum for children with special needs, Islamic education teachers who are not teachers who are graduates of special service schools, as well as the lack of supporting facilities as learning media, doing the learning process run monotonously.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate code mixing and code switching used by English teachers in EFL classrooms. There are two major focuses in this study; the type of dominant code mixing and code switching used by the teachers. A qualitative study was used where the data were teachers’ language classroom gained by observing their classroom practices and utterances obtained through in-depth interviews. The result shows that there were three kinds of code mixing found in teachers’ and students’ utterances in EFL classroom. They were intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and pronunciation shifting. The study also found that there were four kinds of code switching found in teachers’ and students’ utterances. They were random mixing, English-Indonesian translation or vice versa, English precedes Indonesian or vice versa, and English sentences precede Indonesian sentences or vice versa. It indicated that code mixing and code switching cannot be separated in English language teaching and learning process. This study has proved that the English teachers used code mixing and code switching in teaching speaking in some types.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the type and function of lecturers’ speech acts in the interaction of learning Arabic at UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Where in the classroom, the lecturers had important roles in the teaching and learning process. They always use speech as medium to convey ideas to students. Lecturers are also expected to function as active communicators in Arabic lectures. The interaction that is built by lecturers and students is inseparable from the speech act. A qualitative approach was implemented where the data taken from lecturer utterances in Arabic learning interactions were obtained from Arabic lecturers. Data collection was taken by using non-participant observation technique. Mechanical devices and stationery are positioned as data collection aids. Data analysis includes data reduction, data presentation, and data collection/verification results. The finding showed that the lecturers use five types of speech acts in Arabic learning interactions, namely directive, assertive, co missive, expressive, and declarative acts. The finding also showed that there are social and educational functions used by Arabic lecturers. Social functions consist of four categories, namely, competitive functions, convivial functions, collaborative functions, and conflictive functions. While, the educational function of lecturer speech acts consists of nine types, namely, giving a positive impression of the material, directing focus, inclusive learning situations, exclusive learning situations, expressing specific things, encouraging students to build conclusion, controlling the learning situation, and providing motivation to students. The results indicated that the lecturers' speech acts deal with social problems and learning objectives.
