Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the effect of provincial minimum wages and education levels on labor absorption in Kalimantan Province. Design/methodology/approach: The study used secondary data from 2019 to 2024 with a panel data regression method. The estimation was conducted using the Random Effect Model (REM) approach to examine the effect of independent variables on labor absorption. Findings: The results show that the provincial minimum wage does not have a significant effect on labor absorption, while the level of education has a significant effect on labor absorption. Simultaneously, the provincial minimum wage and education levels have a positive and significant effect on labor absorption as indicated by an increase in the number of workers absorbed in Kalimantan Province. Research limitations/implications: This study is limited to the period of 2019-2024 and only covers the Kalimantan region, so the results cannot be generalized to all regions in Indonesia. Further studies are recommended to expand the variables and coverage area in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding. Practical implications: These findings emphasize the importance of establishing a balanced minimum wage policy and improving the quality of education and workforce skills as strategies to strengthen labor absorption and reduce unemployment rates in Kalimantan Province. Originality/value: This study provides empirical evidence by analyzing the effect of provincial minimum wages and education levels on labor absorption using cross-provincial panel data in Kalimantan from 2019–2024. The study contributes to the literature on regional labor markets, particularly in natural resource–based regions such as Kalimantan. Paper type: Research paper.   Keywords: Provincial Minimum Wages; Education Level; Labor Absorption; Kalimantan Province.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the Food Security Index at the regency/municipal level in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province and the Riau Islands Province, focusing on the effects of harvested rice area, rice productivity, and food distribution accessibility. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs a quantitative research method, aiming to describe the food security conditions in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province and the Riau Islands Province using numerical indicators and empirical data. The data are analyzed using panel data regression analysis to examine the effects of harvested rice area, rice productivity, and distribution accessibility in both regions. Furthermore, this analysis allows for a comparison of the factors that most significantly contribute to food security vulnerability in these two provinces. Findings: The results indicate the existence of structural differences in food security between the Riau Islands Province and the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. The Riau Islands Province is highly dependent on external access, particularly inter-regional supplies and trade, whereas the Bangka Belitung Islands Province remains reliant on local production. Harvested rice area has a negative effect in both provinces, indicating that an expansion of cultivated land does not directly contribute to food security unless accompanied by improvements in productivity. Rice production exhibits markedly different effects across the two provinces. In the Riau Islands Province, rice production has a negative and statistically significant effect, while in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province it has a positive and statistically significant effect, highlighting a key structural difference between the two regions. Road accessibility does not have a statistically significant effect in either province; however, its role is relatively more pronounced in Bangka Belitung than in the Riau Islands. Overall, food security in the Riau Islands is primarily determined by external factors, such as inter-island supply chains and trade, whereas food security in Bangka Belitung is more strongly influenced by internal factors, particularly local agricultural production. Research limitations/implications: Further research is recommended to expand the study population to include archipelagic regions across Indonesia by employing spatial analysis, thereby enhancing the understanding of food security dynamics and inter-island linkages. Practical implications: The results of the study show that each region has different characteristics, whereby the Riau Islands Province has a smaller island area compared to the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. so that the Riau Islands Province is very limited in terms of rice production and rice harvest area in supporting food security. However, road access has a positive but insignificant relationship, so the government must be able to guarantee access to imports from outside the region to meet the needs of the region. Meanwhile, in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, rice production and road accessibility have a positive correlation, meaning that the government must strengthen local production and improve road access in order to maintain food security in the region. Originality/value: this study compares two provinces, namely the Province of Bangka Belitung Islands and the Province of Riau Islands, both of which are island regions that are equally vulnerable to food price volatility, making it important to examine food security in these two regions. It also examines whether rice production, rice harvest area, and distribution accessibility can affect food security in these regions. Paper type: This article is a study to examine how the food security index in the regencies/cities of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province and the Riau Islands Province is influenced by rice harvest area, rice productivity, and distribution accessibility in these regions.

Abstract

Objectives We examine how renewable energy transition, energy dependency, and energy use influence economic growth across five ASEAN industrial economies Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam over the period 1990 to 2022. The goal is to measure the impact of renewable energy transition on GDP per capita in these six countries using panel data modeling. Theoretical Framework Grounded in the energy-growth nexus, our study explores how varying levels of renewable energy penetration and fossil energy dependency might shape long-run economic outcomes. We carry out the analysis within the transition theory of energy sustainability, highlighting disparities among the six ASEAN member countries. Method We make use of big data SAS software to conduct static panel data regression with real-time updates from World Bank Open Data. Our model includes pooled OLS, random effects, and fixed effects estimations to measure the hypothetical relationships between energy use (kg), energy net import (%), renewable energy output (%) and GDP per capita (USD). Results and Discussion Our analysis indicates that energy use (EU) positively affects GDP per capita with a strong and statistically significant coefficient (β = 4.29, p < 0.0001). Net energy import (ENI) also contributes positively (β = 5.50, p = 0.0014). Notably, renewable energy output (REO) shows a positive significant relationship at 10 percent level under the fixed effects model (β = 48.95, p = 0.0807). A closer look reveals that Vietnam and Philippines are leading in embracing renewable transition, while Brunei lags behind with a near-zero REO. This finding may reflect policy inertia and uneven energy investment across countries in the South East Asia region. Research Implications and Originality/Value Our findings contribute to both policy design and theoretical refinement by revealing how clean energy development influences inclusive economic growth. The novelty of this research lies in its use of panel econometrics integrated with real-time big data analytics, offering a replicable model for energy monitoring in developing regions. This study also provides ASEAN policymakers with targeted insights for accelerating the clean energy transition through data-driven governance.
