Abstract

This article examines the problems of inequality in the process of social and cultural changes as consequence of big industries development in Aceh Utara, especially at the region called ZILS (Industrial Zone of Lhok Seumawe). The development itself is recognized to be a successful effort to lift up economy condition of the region. However, it also becomes a drive force for the birth of inequality phenomena among groups of society (i.e. industry, in-migrant and local people) in this region. Some important aspects of the inequality are caused by the imbalance patterns in fulfilment necessity of the groups, the inappropriateness of social and cultural considerations at industry planning and, last but not least, lack of harmonious communication between the people of industry, regional government and local society.

Abstract

This paper aims to understand the change of the farmers’ struggle movement from physical into symbolic in a region namely Jenggawah which is located in Jember Regency in 1998-2005. The struggles of the farmers are divided into physical and symbolic struggle. The way of the struggle has changed since 1998. The farmers’ symbolic struggle was conducted through some exhortation and insistence in the form of statement letter for the government or related institution concerning about the land status. Symbolic struggle is an unseen struggle and it can only be recognized through its aim in order to get acknowledgement from other group. The mechanism of this struggle movement tends to be smooth. It is expressed in the form of scientific discourse in written text. The factors that change the movement are the change of political system from New Order Regime into Reformation Era in 1998 and HGU release. The legality of land owning, in the end of this long symbolic struggle, was noted by the gradually launching of land certificates in 2001 from BPN Jember for the farmers.

Abstract

As nation which multiethnic, Indonesia has potency of conflict. From perspective of intercultural communications, inter-ethnic conflict can initiate from cultural identity differences which communicated ethnocentrism. Analyse for ethnical conflict of Dayak and Madura in West Kalimantan show that stereotype - representing the part of self perception through ascription process - as most potential property of cultural identity that generate internal issue in intercultural communications. This Stereotype was afirmed through conflict historically and culturally developed; built by both bloodthirsty tradition "carok" of Madura and "red mug" of Dayak. In order to intercultural communications yield effective intercultural interaction, hence stereotype have to be avoided exposed oneselfly to things actual which is being faced, conflict history should be closed, and the both parties have to assume that communications can assist to finish their problem. Empathy must be opened by both parties to measure communications situation freshment. Equality should be found and developed, as far as that facilitate the solving of problem. If even also still there are difference, hence the oppressive must remain to be avoided.

Abstract

Previous studies indicate that the complexity of malaria transmission in certain areas is influenced by the indirect impact of climate change as well as non-climate factors, such as population mobility, behaviour and their access to health services. This paper aims to discuss the knowledge, understanding and health behaviour of rural community related to malaria and climate change. Information presented in this paper is mainly based on field research conducted in Kebumen District in 2010, and supported by a desk review of secondary data, related documents and previous studies. The study shows that several areas (village or sub-district) in Kebumen are vulnerable to malaria. Trend of malaria tends to increase during the last three years (2008-2010), meanwhile malaria outbreaks occur almost every year in different places. Even though local people are aware of the weather and temperature changes in their areas, they have not linked it with climate change phenomenon. People’s knowledge of malaria in terms of the source of the disease, the tranmission of malaria and the various method of malaria prevention is relatively limited and has not been practiced in their daily life. Therefore, an active participation of the government, the private sector and the local community is needed to address this situation. Keywords: malaria, climate change, knowledge and behaviour, rural community, Kebumen district
