Abstract

This article aims to explain the presence of mosque in Ambarukmo Plaza which is categorized one of the leading shopping center in Yogyakarta. The presence of mosque in the shopping center is a unique and interesting phenomenon because the mosque becomes one of the essential elements of the marketing strategy that the management of the mosque is directly under the management of Ambarukmo Plaza. So that the mosque becomes an integral part of the market system which takes place in the shopping center. In view of the business, providing public facilities are part of the service to the consumer. The mosque which is used as a public facility, in addition to having the function as a means of worship, is also functioned as a means of social activities and other activities. In terms of methodology, this article was written by using a qualitative approach that produces descriptive data about the presence of mosque in Ambarukmo Plaza, Yogyakarta. Based on the analysis of field data findings by using Bourdieu’s concepts such practice, habitus, and arena, as well as market and capital, it can be drawn the conclusion that the presence of mosque in the shopping center opens a new space related to the religious capital, and it encourages the owners of religious capital to compete and to win this relatively new arena. Instead, the owner of the economic capital that intentionally creates this new arena is also competing to increase their capital accumulation through the same arena. Thus, the implication, if any shopping center or mall uses the religious capital to win the market, then it will indirectly strengthen the thesis from some social scientists predicted that this is the age of religious resurgence in the public sphere. Keywords: mosque, mall, bourdieu, religious capital and religious resurgence.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to understand the religious essence of fishermen by: (1) Explaining the ideological and religious transformations that occurred in Brondong from time to time, (2) Understanding the social construction process of the Brondong fishermen community in interpreting religion. Both issues will be approached with the perspective of PeterL.Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s Social Construction and Pierre Bourdieu's Social Practice, with a phenomenological approach. From the analysis results obtained the following conclusion. First, the transformation of ideology and religion that occurred during the Mataram Kingdom until the social movement in 1965 influenced the ideological and religious dynamics of the fishing community Brondong. Second, the social construction of the religiosity of fishermen shows the existence of religious differences in the structural and cultural levels due to competition of social capital and symbolic capital which is fought in the realm of fishing society of Brondong.

Abstract

This article is a part of research findings on fishermen, conducted in 2009 at fishing village of Bendar in Pati Region of Central Java Province. The study shows that fishermen basically face a number of handicaps or problems, concerning with regulations that forbid operating cantrang nets and sale of fish over the sea, bureaucracy difficulties in terms of officials’ negative mental attitude, lack of capital, market system based on middle man, and instability in income generation. As a means of production, cantrang nets are extremely prohibited to operate due to considered similar to trawl nets in the way of operation. The study is basically a qualitative research in which informants and key persons come from fishermen themselves and informal leaders in local community. A number of questions as listed in interview guide have been addressed to all of them and designed to get information in-depth as primary data. In addition, the study also collects some data from other sources as secondary data to support primary data. In coping with such problems, some actions have been done both by fishermen and government. Regarding to regulations on cantrang nets operation, Fishery and Marine of Central Java Office enforces a special policy that allows such gear to operate only by vessels with 29 GT or below in size. However, in sight of fishermen this policy is not a real or an expected solution. Therefore, as a preferred kind of gear they want all cantrang nets in any size are allowed to operate without any limitation. In connecting with other barriers, fishermen get loans from local banks to overcome the lack of capital, bridge good communication with middle men, and offer profit sharing system to the crews. Keywords: Fishermen, fishery barriers, regulations, capital, marketing system, income generation.
