Abstract

Natuna in Riau Islands is one of outermost region of the Republic of Indonesia, which is considered to have disintegration potential. Malaysia once claimed that Natuna should be part of its territory. This paper aims to answer the following questions: What is sense of nationalism of people in Natun? Is there a potential disintegration of Natuna community, to choose to be a part of Malaysia? What is government's effort to protect Natuna, so it cannot be separated from sovereignty territory of Republic of Indonesia? The purpose of this paper is therefore to indicate factors that determine nationalism; to describe disintegration potentialsy; and to know government's efforts to safeguard Natuna as an area of sovereignty of Republic of Indonesia. This paper is based on a qualitative research, that data collection techniques employed through in-depth interviews, observations, and literature reviews. The results showed that geographical closeness of economic and socio-cultural with Malaysia does not decrease sense of nationalism in the Natuna community. Natuna community views Indonesia as a large country with a wider area and more population than Malaysia, and is a respected country in Asian region.

Abstract

This is a study to identify and discuss socio-economic impacts of forced-displacement in the course of Lapindo mudflow in East Java. The main conceptual framework of this study follows previous study which views Lapindo mudflow case as ?disaster of development? for has caused massive forced-displacement of the populations (Novenanto, 2015c). Main themes of discussion of this study will concentrate on migration patterns, loss of access to land and buildings, changing type of work, disruption of access to public facilities and services, and social ties. This study relies on data collected from a community-based research to identify multidimensional impacts of Lapindo mudflow into 6 (six) partner-communities. The data is collected through questionnaire-based survey, focus group discussions, and observations. The research process involved members of each community from research design, collecting data, and data analysis. Such involvement is an implicit strategy to empower them through a continuous practice of critical thinking and logical reasoning which could be additional cultural capital for them in self-empowerment and advocation to the fulfillment and recovery of basic rights in the aftermath of the disaster.

Abstract

Abstract Geertz?s religious characterization underwent drastic change since the ?65 event. Western influences and the use of Wahabi-salafism as instruments of religious politics have changed the open model of religious life. After that event, the model of religious life turns into closed; formed on the basis of a political security agenda and limited to five official religions.. This article views the model as the basis for the formation of an authoritarian religious character, among others, which gives space to modernists to control the political infrastructure of religious and state religious resources, strengthen limited official religious arrangements, allow pressures and threats to work on religious conversion, purification of traditions and labeling untruth. In addition, the model is used to produce a discourse of tolerance which has the following tendencies: the discourse of tolerance originating from Western political philosophy is contradictory to the religious norms that are growing in Indonesian society, and the discourse operates in a limited manner among official religions as the dominant discourse that is dominant creating formal-exclusivism that strengthens the authoritarian religious character. Key words: diversity, authoritarianism, tolerance, religious dialogue, reconciliation, marginality

Abstract

This study addresses the issue of working mothers who give exclusive breastfeeding to their babies. During this time, public overlooks breastfeeding activities by considering breastfeeding merely as a mother's duty and a mundane matter. The involvement of her husband, family, community, and government to support the success of exclusive breastfeeding is still lacking. Workers' mothers have a dual role, domestic and public duties. Breastfeeding is often a barrier to women's performance in the public sphere and indirectly it impacts on household financial conditions. On the other hand, exclusive breastfeeding provides many benefits, primary for health and economic benefits. Therefore, this study wants to analyze breastfeeding activities through the development paradigm and finds the proper strategy for stakeholders to navigate breastfeeding as a development activity. The approach used in this research is qualitative by conducting interviews with stakeholders and literature review. The concepts of gender and development are applied to analyze the involvement of partners, families and communities in supporting the achievement of exclusive breastfeeding. The government also has an essential role in ensuring women and men have equal rights in the workplace and in the domestic sphere to do the household chores and bearing the children. The social movement also proved effective in providing an understanding to public that ensuring exclusive breastfeeding is a responsibility for all stakeholders.

Abstract

Since 2016, there have been several cases in intolerance towards minority groups in Yogyakarta and Bandung. Those actions were triggered by conservative-extremist religious groups which are seemingly becoming powerful source for disintegration as well as threats to the freedom of expression and diversity. With the lack of protection from regional government apparatus, initiative grassroots movements tend to find alternative ways that open possibilities to create a space for minority groups. In Yogyakarta, there is Pemetik Buah Khuldi, a community which provides alternative critical public education related to diversity issues and democracy. Meanwhile in Bandung, there is Panggung Minoritas, an initiative that creates a safe space to gender and sexual minorities meet, share, learn and discuss about gender and sexuality topics. Both groups have similar purposes which cultivate awareness and support minorities rights through education, support groups, and creative activities. By examining both independent community?s activities through ethnographic approach, we analyze how these groups are becoming prevalent in the area of Java where have high numbers of intolerances and the reason why they prefer grassroots movement to government-approved groups to support minority groups. Furthermore, this article seeks to contribute a relevant perspective on recent situation of marginal groups and part of our critical reflection on responding of common project failure to recognise diversity.

Abstract

Abstarct For Kodi's people in Southwest Sumba Regency, their economy is still based on social kinship organizations, which can be seen from the belief system in Marapu, that is a father and a creator and a guardian of life (Ama Mawolo Ina Marawi). Therefore, both the father and mother's kinship lines, each creatively revealed for the sake of the morality of exchange, that is the continuation of the Uma-economy. Symbolically the exchange is ritualized at a traditional ritual. This article can be treated as a reflective fragment of footage from a continuous participatory research process that has continued since 2015. The process is related to the effort with community members to choose and reproduce food exchange modes, without being a beggar (mandara uang), on small islands in Maluku and East Nusa Tenggara for their food sovereignty. Therefore, in this article Southwest Sumba will be connected comparatively with other districts and islands.
