The strong use of the languagecan be observed in the villages of Meok, Apoho, and Malakoni, while in the last three villages it has begun toerode due to interaction with ethnic immigrants. This qualitative research was conducted on Enggano Island,Bengkulu, as part of the 2015 LIPI expedition called the Widya Nusantara Expedition (EWIN) which involvedvarious disciplines, both natural and social sciences. In collecting data, observation and in-depth interviews wereused to determine the linguistic situation, especially language contact and the symptoms of language extinction. This study shows that language contact between the Enggano people who speak Enggano and the immigrants withtheir respective languages is very strong in the villages of Banjarsari, Kaana, and Khayapu, causing symptomsof language extinction. Meanwhile, the Enggano language in the villages of Meok, Apoho, and Malakoni is stillquite able to survive because the population is homogeneous with Enggano people and has not been mixed withimmigrants much.

Abstract

Art collective is a form of artistic subjectivity that has become increasingly common in Indonesian urbanlandscape in the last two decades. By focusing on seven collectives (Gudskul, ruangrupa, Forum Lenteng, Serrum,Graphic Huru Hara, Gardu House and Cut and Rescue), this article is a mapping of the discursive evolution onart collectives in Jakarta during 2000 – 2022. The method used were distant reading and social network analysisof the interactions of these art collectives on social media (Twitter and Instagram) as well as a number of journalsand books they publish. Social network analysis were applied to examine the pattern of mentions between socialmedia accounts in discussing art collective issues. Distant reading were also applied to the posts of these accounts, the various journals, and books published collectively. Through these method, three main things were found: 1)the emergence of art collectives in Jakarta in the early 2000s was not accompanied by a conscious consolidationof collectivities based on multiplicities, but rather on individuality, 2) the shift of focus from “alternative spaces”to “ collective” and “lumbung” (the commons) emerged from the need for network consolidation and communalresource management, and 3) the focus on “lumbung” led to a return to a number of traditional features of sanggarand a more programmatic conception of art

Abstract

This research aims to examine the geographic conditions of Mahakam Estuary and its relation to the existence of settlements, the forms and development of settlements, and the factors that cause settlements to be concentrated in the Mahakam Estuary area. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data is collected through interviews, observations, documentation, and literature studies. The snowball sampling technique is used to obtain in-depth information and data. This research uses spatial analysis overlay support in creating settlement development maps. Data validation is done using the triangulation technique. The sedimentation process of the Mahakam River forms an elongated delta (bird−foot) shape. The community widely uses the Mahakam Delta area as fishponds, agricultural land, and settlements. The houses are built on stilts and permanent structures. The morphology of settlements includes elongated, clustered, dispersed, linear following transport routes, and surrounding certain facilities. The settlements grew from Kutai, Dayak, and Bugis ethnic villages that migrated. The concentration of the population in the Mahakam Estuary area is influenced by the availability of job opportunities, adequate infrastructure,  security, gentle topography, location close to the city, and abundant natural resources potential.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all walks of life in Indonesia, forcing society to adapt. As one of the gender minority groups in a relatively conservative country, the pandemic might impact the transgender community differently. The purpose of this research is to analyze transgender individuals’ adaptation during the pandemic. We employed the qualitative descriptive research method by conducting in-depth interviews with 10 informants from several cities and regencies in Indonesia. Transcription, categorization, and theoretical review were performed to analyze the data. Our results show that transgender individuals in Indonesia have faced unique difficulties and discrimination during the pandemic, a decrease in income, and limited employment opportunities. Our informants’ adaptation strategies vary, for example, financial planning, socializing with friends, professional counseling, and many more. We conclude that relentless advocacy toward the people and government is required to ensure their rights to equal treatment despite their gender identity. Several suggestions to improve their well-being starts with educating the public to use gender-neutral pronouns, politely asking for people’s pronouns, and understanding transgender issues from their perspective. The government should guarantee antidiscriminative public access, further acknowledge transgender people’s civil rights, and increase social assistance to marginalized communities impacted by the pandemic.

Abstract

This paper departs from the lack of historical studies that discuss the issue of ecofeminism in Indonesia. The purpose of writing this article is to describe Samin women and nature in the concept of ecofeminism, the rejection of cement factories by Samin women, and the balance of the roles of women and men in the domestic sphere when Samin women resist. This study used a historical method consisting of four steps: 1. Heuristics is the collection of historical sources. 2. Verify sources. 3. Through external and internal criticism. 4. Interpretation of data that has been obtained through the process of data synthesis and analysis. 4. Historiography is writing history using descriptive analysis. The results of this study show that ecofeminism first developed in the West in the 1970s—1980s. Historically, the people’s movement began during the Dutch colonial government. The motives of the Samin community movement are based on social, economic, and spiritual factors. Samin women show the concept of Samin women with nature, and nature has a fairly respectable position. This is reflected in the view of the Samin people, who represent the earth as “mother”. This shows the close relationship between the earth and women. The driving factor for the transformation of Samin women from the domestic sphere to the public sphere is the green revolution of globalization. The post-reform Samin women’s movement is evidenced by her involvement in rejecting cement development in the Sukolilo area, Pati, Central Java.

Abstract

Women in the Batanghari watershed experienced changes and lost their livelihoods due to conversion of plantation. Women worked in rubber plantations and agriculture and had to stop working altogether, or worked in plantation companies as daily laborers. Land conversion did not only change the pattern of livelihoods, but also changed the way of life of women. Some women even encouraged their husbands and sons to mine gold in the river to provide for the family. This research was conducted in two villages; Teluk Kuali and Melako Intan were opposite and separated by the Batanghari River. This research aimed to answer the question whether women in the two villages had knowledge about the climate crisis, and how rural women respond to the ongoing climate crisis. In collecting data, this research used interview techniques and direct observation. Ecofeminism is used to analyze this research.
