Abstract

The assessment of undernutrition status in toddlers was conducted using the weight-for-length or weight-for-height index (WLH or WHH), with a range of -3 to < -2 standard deviations (SD). This study aims to analyze the relationship between maternal age at pregnancy, mothers' nutritional knowledge, and parenting practices in complementary feeding (MP-ASI) with the incidence of undernutrition in toddlers aged 6-23 months. This research employed a cross-sectional design with a population of toddlers aged 6-23 months. A total of 98 toddlers were selected as samples through a cluster random sampling technique. Data collection was conducted through anthropometric measurements, including the weight and length/height of the toddlers, along with questionnaires to assess mothers' knowledge levels and MP-ASI parenting practices. The collected data were analyzed using the chi square test. The results of the analysis showed that maternal age at pregnancy did not have a significant relationship with the incidence of undernutrition in toddlers aged 6-23 months, with a p-value of 0.152 (p > 0.1). However, mothers' nutritional knowledge and MP-ASI parenting practices showed a significant relationship with the incidence of undernutrition in toddlers, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.1). In conclusion, low levels of maternal nutritional knowledge and inadequate MP-ASI parenting practices are associated with undernutrition in toddlers aged 6-23 months. In contrast, maternal age at pregnancy, whether below 20 or above 35, does not show a significant relationship with toddler nutrition status in this study.

Abstract

High cholesterol levels will cause blockages in blood vessels so that circulation is disrupted. The incidence of hypercholesterolemia is still quite high. The Food Cholesterol Detect application is one of the screening tools that can be used to determine the amount of cholesterol intake consumed through food. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using the Food Cholesterol Detect application on the total cholesterol levels of patients with hypercholesterolemia. This research design uses quasi-experiments before and after using the application with a one group pre-post test design. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis to see the relationship between the dependent variable (total cholesterol levels of hypercholesterolemia patients) and the independent variable. The characteristics of respondents were mostly in the age group of 30-49 years, approximately 44.3%,. Most of the hypercholesterolemia patients have normal nutritional status based on BMI, namely (50%). Cholesterol levels are mostly female, namely (62.9%) having high borderline total cholesterol levels of 200-239 mg/dl. Cholesterol intake in food consumed shows that all respondents, both men and women, 100% have a high intake of cholesterol in food ≥ 200 mg / hr. There is a difference in the average total cholesterol levels of hypercholesterolemia patients before using the Food Cholesterol Detect Application, which is 234.432 mg/dl, while after use it is 203.892 mg/dl. There is an effect of the effectiveness of the Food Cholesterol Detect Application on reducing total cholesterol levels.

Abstract

Children with Down's syndrome have delays in language development, particularly in vocabulary acquisition. Home-based programs offered by parents play an important role in improving the vocabulary of children with Down syndrome. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of home programs on the vocabulary development of children with Down syndrome. This study used a quantitative method with a “quasi-experimental” non-equivalent control group design. The sample was divided into two groups: the intervention group, which received the home program, and the control group, which did not receive the treatment. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test and an independent t-test. The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the intervention group and the control group. The results of the paired T-test in the intervention group showed a p-value = 0.016, while in the control group p = 0.080. The independent T-test showed a p-value = 0.005 (p < 0.05), demonstrating a significant effect of the home program on vocabulary improvement in children with Down's syndrome. In conclusion, the more parents are involved in the home program proposed by the speech therapist, the more Down syndrome children improve their vocabulary.

Abstract

Stunting is a form of malnutrition in children under the age of five that remains a global health problem. This condition is influenced by various factors, including parenting in feeding and low maternal self-efficacy. This study aims to analyse the relationship between parenting in feeding and maternal self-efficacy with the incidence of stunting in toddlers in Kramat Jati Village, East Jakarta. This study used a quantitative design with analytic observation method and cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 366 mothers who had toddlers aged 12 to 59 months, with the sampling technique using Non-Probability Sampling through the Quota Sampling method. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-square test. The results showed a significant relationship between feeding parenting patterns and the incidence of stunting (p = 0.009; p < 0.05) and between maternal self-efficacy and the incidence of stunting (p = 0.007; p < 0.05). From these findings, it can be concluded that inappropriate feeding parenting and low maternal self-efficacy contribute to the incidence of stunting in toddlers. Therefore, family-based interventions are needed to improve feeding skills and strengthen mothers' self-efficacy to reduce stunting in the region.

Abstract

Papanicolaou staining is routinely used in staining ascitic fluid to identify malignant cells. However, pale nucleus arise as a problem associated with Harris hematoxylin, causing the sample to be hard to see under microscope. Methylene blue can be an alternative stain targeting nucleus in fluid sample. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of methylene blue in Papanicolaou staining for the cytology of ascitic fluid. The research uses an experimental approach by preparing four smears from each of 6 ascitic fluid samples obtained from the Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, at Airlangga University. The four smears were stained differently, consisting of Papanicolaou staining as control, and methylene blue replacing Harris hematoxylin with concentration of 5%, 10% and 15%. Slides were graded for its morphology with quality scores of 1,2,3 and 4, followed by statistical analysis. Based on the results of the Kruskal-Wallis test, the Sig value was 0.001, which was <0.005, showing difference between control and experimental group. Quality assessment revealed slides stained with 5% methylene blue solution to have clear shape of the cell nucleus, cytoplasm and the shape of the cell compared with slides stained with 10% and 15%. Hence, it can be concluded that 5% methylene blue solution can be used as an alternative solution.
