Abstract

Ammonia pollution in the Musi River resulting from domestic, industrial, and agricultural waste threatens aquatic ecosystems, necessitating effective and eco-friendly adsorbents such as water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) leaves. This study aims to analyze the effects of activation time and temperature variations on the characteristics and efficiency of water hyacinth leaf-based activated carbon in adsorbing ammonia from Musi River water. Synthesis involved carbonization at 400 °C, chemical activation with H₃PO₄, activation time variations (60, 90, and 120 minutes), and activation temperatures (400 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C). Characterization included FTIR, PSA, moisture content, ash content, and specific surface area analysis. Ammonia concentration reduction was quantified using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at 640 nm. The activated carbon exhibited a surface area of 162.08 m²/g, moisture content of 4.27%, ash content of 10.98%, and mean particle size of 1199.3 ± 64.7 nm. The optimum condition was obtained at 60 minutes activation and 600 °C, decreasing river water ammonia absorbance from 0.309 (initial concentration 0.00722 mg/L) to 0.082, achieving the highest removal efficiency of 73.46%. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests confirmed that activation time and temperature significantly affected adsorption performance (p < 0.05). In conclusion, water hyacinth leaf activated carbon is highly promising as a sustainable bio-adsorbent to reduce ammonia in polluted waters.

Abstract

This research was conducted to address the issue of high iron (Fe) levels in borewell water in Sungai Kupah Village, Sungai Kakap District, which adversely affects the community’s clean water quality. The primary objective is to analyze the effectiveness of the slow sand filtration method in reducing Fe concentrations and to determine the most optimal composition of filtration materials. The study employed a two-stage experimental approach, utilizing shell sand, zeolite, and coconut shell charcoal as filtration media. The test results indicate that shell sand was able to reduce Fe levels from 24.78 mg/L to 0.21 mg/L, while coconut shell charcoal reduced Fe levels to 0.32 mg/L. Zeolite showed fluctuating results, with a final Fe concentration of 7.28 mg/L. The combination of shell sand, charcoal, and zeolite yielded the most effective Fe reduction, lowering the concentration from 4.64 mg/L to 0.14 mg/L in Dusun Sepakat. Other parameters such as pH increased from 5.8 to 6.8, and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) remained below the safe limit (<300 mg/L). The study concludes that slow sand filtration with the appropriate material composition can serve as a practical solution for communities to obtain safe and usable clean water.

Abstract

The energy crisis and the rise in waste production have prompted the adoption of organic biomass waste, plastic waste, B40 biodiesel fuel (comprising 40% biodiesel and 60% diesel), and used oil as alternative solid fuels. This research sought to enhance the integration of additives and waste oil into different blends of organic biomass and plastic, with a focus on the calorific value, moisture content, and ash content of fuel pellets. The biomass used consisted of materials sourced from wood branches and dry leaves, while polyethylene (PE) served as the plastic component. The mixture variations included 100% biomass, 90% biomass with 10% plastic, and 80% biomass with 20% plastic, with B40 added in concentrations from 200 to 400 ppm and volumes between 50 and 300 mL/kg of the mixture. The pellet production process involved drying, shredding, mixing, compacting, and testing the final product according to specified parameters. Results showed that incorporating plastic and a small amount of additives decreased moisture and ash content while increasing the calorific value. The optimal blend was determined to be 80% biomass and 20% plastic, which achieved the highest calorific value of 5568 kcal/kg and optimal combustion quality. The use of biomass, plastic, and used oil waste as sustainable alternative fuels is highly recommended to promote environmentally friendly waste and energy management.

Abstract

High levels of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) remain a major challenge for Drinking Water Supply Systems, particularly in island regions. The study aimed to analyze the water distribution system condition, water loss level, and institutional performance of the Yapen Islands Regency Water Utility (PDAM) in supporting sustainable water supply. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach with an evaluative method through field observations, interviews, and document reviews. NRW analysis was conducted using water balance with WB-EasyCalc, while institutional performance evaluation referred to the BPP-SPAM Guidelines. Results showed the NRW level reached 33.23% or 1,072,022 m³/year and was dominated by physical losses caused by pipeline leakage and inadequate distribution control. The institutional performance evaluation yielded a score of 3.01, indicating the PDAM is categorized as “Healthy”. Nevertheless, indicators such as billing collection efficiency and human resource training still require optimization. Therefore, distribution network rehabilitation, District Metered Area (DMA) implementation, improvement of distribution monitoring systems, and strengthening of institutional and human resource capacities are required to support sustainable water supply management.

Abstract

Mass transit stations generate domestic wastewater from passenger, employee, and food tenant activities; therefore, wastewater treatment plants need to be evaluated to ensure process performance and compliance with environmental quality standards. This study aims to evaluate the technical and environmental performance of four wastewater treatment plants, consisting of three underperforming units, namely I1, M5-2, and L1, and one best-performing unit, C1, used as a comparison. The technical evaluation was conducted through field observation, design criteria analysis, operational analysis, and evaluation of standard operating procedures. The environmental evaluation was carried out through inlet-outlet laboratory testing, removal efficiency calculation, and daily pollutant load calculation. The technical evaluation results showed that WWTP I1, M5-2, and L1 still had parameters that exceeded the quality standards, particularly ammonia, TSS, COD, and total coliform. The main causes included unstable aeration, excessive hydraulic loading, short detention time, insufficient biofilter media, sludge and scum accumulation, and the lack of detailed procedures for abnormal conditions. The environmental evaluation showed that WWTP M5-2 had the lowest environmental performance due to an increase in TSS load by 0.02 kg/day and ammonia load by 1.14 kg/day at the outlet, with effluent values exceeding the quality standards. Short-term recommendations focus on process control and operational improvement, while long-term recommendations are directed toward increasing WWTP capacity for L1 and M5-2.

Abstract

Sandblasting waste is a by-product of the shipyard industry. Large quantities of this waste are generated during surface cleaning and preparation process. This waste classified as hazardous and toxic waste. Usually, this waste is disposed despite containing a substantial amount of silica. Valorization of sandblasting waste offers a sustainable approach to reducing environmental burdens while promoting resource recovery. This study aimed to extract silica from sandblasting waste using the alkali fusion method. It also characterized the physicochemical properties of the silica as a basis for its potential use as a precursor material for adsorbent. Silica was successfully extracted with an SiO2 of 92,05%, as determined by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the presence of silanol (Si–OH) and siloxane (Si–O–Si) functional groups, which serve as active adsorption sites. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX) revealed a porous surface morphology with SiO₂ as the predominant composition. Furthermore, BET–BJH analysis demonstrated a specific surface area of 278,721 m2/g , average pore diameter of 7,317 nm. A type IV isotherm indicates the formation of a mesoporous structure. These characteristics suggest that the extracted silica possesses favorable physicochemical properties for adsorption processes.

Abstract

The land application system for treated wastewater has a specific hydrogeological carrying capacity that is highly responsive to seasonal fluctuations. This study aims to analyze the hydraulic impacts and contaminant transport risks resulting from the infiltration of treated domestic office wastewater (7,4 m³/day) and healthcare facility effluent (11,2 m³/day) on the reliability of groundwater monitoring wells. Three-dimensional numerical simulations were conducted using MODFLOW and MT3DMS codes to evaluate four flux-loading scenarios under transient-state conditions. Hydrodynamic simulation results confirmed that the spatial placement of the existing upstream (control) and downstream (impact) monitoring wells is scientifically valid along the regional hydraulic gradient. During the rainy season, when the natural water table is exceptionally shallow (2–3 m), implementing Scenario 1 (100% Maximum Capacity) triggers a local Groundwater Mounding of up to 1,45 m, significantly reducing the unsaturated vadose zone thickness. Consequently, the travel time of dissolved solutes, such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), accelerates rapidly, penetrating the downstream well screen within 45 days at a concentration of 18,45 mg/L. Conversely, adopting Scenario 3 (50% loading with a two-day watering rotation) reduces the spatial extent of the contaminant plume by over 70%. This scenario is recommended as the optimum environmental management strategy to preserve the water quality integrity of the unconfined shallow aquifer.
