Abstract

The increasing waste due to increasing population and consumption in rural area led municipal wastemanagement in rural area essential. However, most of rural area did not have well developed municipal wastemanagement for some reasons. This community service intended to provide a contribution to society to manage municipalwaste in rural area. Action research is implemented in this community service. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) wasapplied to identify what are the main problems and decided what actions will be conducted during community service.From the first FGD, we concluded that the activities should be prepared were providing information related to negativeimpact of disposing municipal waste illegally, understanding on the type of municipal waste and how to separate them aswell as training to manage municipal waste in simple way through Takakura method. Those activities, then, conductedthrough a workshop on municipal waste management in household level

Abstract

Program pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk menyediakan akomodasi bagi perkembangan motorik anak stunting melalui pendekatan arsitektural. Mitra abdi merupakan anak stunting yang tinggal di perkampungan padat penduduk di wilayah Sidotopo Surabaya, wilayah di Kota Surabaya dengan tingkat prevalensi tertinggi di kota Surabaya. Metode yang dipergunakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah program edukasi dan revitalisasi hunian. Program edukasi dilakukan melalui model personalized coaching atau pendampingan individual mengingat kasus stunting memiliki persoalan yang spesifik, dan revitalisasi dilakukan dengan membenahi dan menata kembali hunian tempat tinggal anak stunting . Pengabdian ini telah menghasilkan model hunian rumah sehat bagi anak stunting dan memberikan media digital video sebagai materi edukasi terhadap upaya mendorong perkembangan motorik anak stunting melalui pendekatan arsitektural. Dari kegiatan ini, telah dihasilkan beberapa luaran yang meliputi luaran utama yang terdiri dari artikel abmas, model rumah ramah stunting sebagai produk abmas, dan video sosialisasi akomodasi bagi anak stunting melalui pendekatan arsitektural. Selain itu, ada luaran tambahan dalam bentuk buku referensi berISBN yang telah terbit dan siap menjadi rujukan bagi penelitian dan pengabdian pada area yang sama. Peluang keberlanjutan dari program ini adalah terbukanya kesempatan untuk pembenahan sanitasi dan elemen furnitur hunian anak stunting.

Abstract

Perumdam Tirta Tarum as a BUMD with healthy performance and has FCR (Full Cost Recovery), but the NRW (Non Revenue Water) score is still quite high at 32.16%. The Karawang branch is the largest contributor to the volume of water loss, around 33% of the total water loss in 19 Branches/IKK units in other service areas. This study uses water balance analysis methods and NRW performance indicators to formulate recommendations for NRW reduction programs. Annual water loss during the period April 2022 to March 2023 was 23.96% with a loss volume of 2,343,756m3/12 months. The percentage of physical water loss is 18.49% and non-physical water loss is 5.47%. When converted to cost values, the annual loss of non-physical water is Rp.2,610,791,315.- and the annual loss of physical water is Rp.8,640,197,936.-. Physical loss is classified as category C performance (severe leakage) and the overall ATR performance indicator is classified as category C (poor ATR condition). Recommendations or strategies for handling NRW efficiently at study locations can be formulated after understanding the causes of NRW and the most influencing component factors.

Abstract

Recently, a problem which often experienced by the Environmental Agency is to monitor the quality of industrial waste. The problem comes from manual monitoring of wastewater and the high cost of laboratory tests for each variable for the waste. This system is intended to develop a wastewater monitoring system considering the state of the environment and technology. This system uses 5 types of sensors to measure the quality of wastewater. The sensor will display measurement data both offline via liquid crystal display (LCD) and online via the website. For the pH sensor test, we obtained an error value approximately of 1.32% and accuracy of 98.68%. For the oxidation reduction potential (ORP) sensor test, we obtained an error value of 1.4% with 98.6% accuracy. We obtained an error value of 0.22% with 99.78% accuracy for the temperature sensor test. For the total dissolved solid (TDS) sensor test, we obtained an error value of 1.02% with 98.98% accuracy. The color sensor is validated using a spectrometer to measure the variation of color in remazol waste concentration. For the Client - Server communication test, the system has a delay of 2 seconds. One of the advantages of using a web server is the system has minimum network traffic.

Abstract

Pengelolaan air limbah yang efektif sangat penting untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidup masyarakat dan menjaga kelestarian lingkungan. Untuk mendukung hal ini, Tim Pengabdian Masyarakat (Abmas) dari Laboratorium Teknologi Pengolahan Air, Departemen Teknik Lingkungan, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), bekerja sama dengan Dinas Cipta Karya Kabupaten Gresik, mengadakan pelatihan bagi Kelompok Pemanfaat dan Pemelihara (KPP) Instalasi Pengolahan Air Limbah (IPAL). Pelatihan ini mencakup penyampaian materi, diskusi, dan praktik langsung terkait sistem pengelolaan limbah domestik, pemanfaatan hasil olahan, serta perawatan IPAL komunal. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman peserta, yang diukur melalui sesi diskusi. Sebanyak 40 peserta menunjukkan antusiasme tinggi selama kegiatan. Program ini berkontribusi pada peningkatan akses sanitasi yang aman di Kabupaten Gresik, sekaligus mendukung pencitraan daerah sebagai wilayah yang peduli lingkungan. Kesimpulannya, pelatihan ini berhasil memberikan pengetahuan dan keterampilan yang relevan kepada peserta, sehingga dapat menjadi model bagi daerah lain dalam mengelola air limbah secara berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Permasalahan sanitasi, khususnya pengelolaan Sistem Pengelolaan Air Limbah Domestik Terpusat (SPALD-T), menjadi isu penting di Indonesia. Tantangan utama mencakup kurangnya pengetahuan, keterampilan, dan pemahaman pengelola SPALD-T, yang menyebabkan pengelolaan air limbah belum optimal. Dampaknya termasuk penyebaran bau dan risiko penyumbatan. Untuk mengatasi hal ini, diadakan pelatihan dan edukasi bagi pengelola SPALD-T di Surabaya. Pelatihan ini bertujuan meningkatkan pemahaman tentang pengelolaan air limbah, prinsip operasional SPALD-T, metode pemeliharaan, serta langkah pemantauan. Melalui pelatihan ini, peserta diharapkan memperoleh pengetahuan lebih baik dan keterampilan praktis yang mumpuni, sehingga mampu mengelola air limbah secara optimal. Hasilnya, kinerja SPALD-T dapat ditingkatkan, dengan mengurangi masalah bau dan penyumbatan serta mendukung keberlanjutan sistem pengelolaan. Program ini juga mendukung pencapaian target pemerintah dalam menyediakan akses sanitasi layak dan aman. Dengan pengelolaan yang lebih efektif, manfaat sanitasi yang lebih baik dapat dirasakan oleh masyarakat.

Abstract

Excessive ammonium and phosphate levels in aquatic environments potentially cause eutrophication, leading to water quality imbalance, algal blooming, and disturbance of biodiversity status. Electrolysis using a sacrificial magnesium anode effectively removes and recovers ammonium and phosphate, producing struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O). The present study investigated the optimum current density and the effect of the ammonium/phosphate molar ratio on struvite production. The current density was controlled at 10, 50, and 100 mA/cm2. An artificial wastewater containing [NH4+]:[PO43-] in a molar ratio of 1:10, 1:1, and 10:1 was used as the test solution. The optimum current density was determined as 50 mA/cm2. The ammonium and phosphate reduction ratios at a 1:1 molar ratio was approximately 46.91% and 74.26%, respectively. Increasing the ammonium molarity in the test solution to 10:1 increased the phosphate reduction ratio to 96.38% while decreasing the ammonium reduction ratio to 26.28%. The maximum precipitation of 4.1914 g was generated at a molar ratio of 10:1 with a specific energy consumption of 0.011 Wh/mg-P, out of the three ammonium/phosphate molar ratio variations. Microscopes and SEM-EDS were used to characterize the precipitates produced, and Visual MINTEQ 3.1 was then used for modeling.

Abstract

This study examined the synthesis of nano-MgO via a precipitation method involving technical-grade magnesium chloride (MgCl2) as the starting material and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) as the precipitating agent. The objective of this study was to fine-tune the synthesis procedure by altering the concentration of NH4OH (0.5% and 1%) and to assess the properties of the resulting nanoparticles in terms of their suitability for applications. The properties of the synthesized nano-MgO were identified using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), iodine number adsorption, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis to evaluate the oxides content, minerals formed and the crystallinity, adsorption capacity, surface area, and porosity. The findings show that, compared to 1%, a concentration of 0.5% NH4OH produced a superior MgO. A nano-MgO with 87.1% purities (of dominantly periclase phase), with an average crystallite grain size of 11.383 nm was formed. The iodine adsorption capacity of 243.01 mg/g, BET surface area of 43.4298 m2/g, and average pore diameter of 9.0002 nm were achieved, indicating formation of nanoporous structure, well-suited for a wide range of industrial use. Whereas when using 1% NH4OH, the purity only reached 83% (of the same dominant phase) with an average crystallite grain size of 11.691 nm, and iodine number of 197.98 mg/g. This research findings indicate that the precipitation method using 0.5% NH4OH is the effective method for producing high-quality nano-MgO from technical grade precursor with improved adsorption capabilities and suitability for large-scale fabrication. Abstract

Phosphate contamination in aquatic environments has become a serious issue due to its role in eutrophication, leading to excessive algal growth and degraded ecosystems. Anthropogenic activities such as agricultural runoff and wastewater discharge significantly increase phosphate concentrations. Among treatment technologies, adsorption using iron-based adsorbents has shown high efficiency, especially at low concentrations. However, performance is influenced by adsorbent type, particle size, and hydrodynamic conditions. This study evaluated the phosphate adsorption performance of Granular Ferric Hydroxide (GFH) and Bayoxide E33 with particle sizes of 74–149 µm, 37–74 µm, and <37 µm. Batch experiments were conducted with 0.3 mg P/L phosphate solution. The isotherm study was performed over 180 minutes, and the kinetics study extended to 240 minutes. Surface morphology was characterized by SEM, and specific surface area was analyzed using BET, which confirmed that smaller particles exhibited higher surface areas. Results showed that GFH <37 µm achieved the highest adsorption capacity of 7.5 mg/g, while Bayoxide <37 µm reached 6.18 mg/g. The Langmuir model best described the isotherm data, and the Pseudo Second-Order model indicated chemisorption as the dominant mechanism. Abstract

IPLT Keputih, the only fecal sludge treatment plant in Surabaya City, plays a critical role in the city's sanitation infrastructure. Its operation is critical to manage the fecal sludge generated by Surabaya residents, ensuring that the effluent is effectively treated before being safely discharged to the environment. According to previous studies, IPLT Keputih still has significant untapped potential, especially in the Solid Separation Chamber (SSC) and Grease Trap (GT) units, which have idle capacity that can be optimized to improve overall efficiency. The study involved primary and secondary data collection. Primary data was collected through comprehensive field observations and measurements, while secondary data was obtained from relevant agencies. Data analysis showed that IPLT Keputih currently treats an average of 97.71 m3 of septage per day. However, the facility has an idle capacity of 139.89 m3/day, which indicates a great opportunity to improve utilization. The calculation of the existing idle capacity was conducted based on the maximum discharge of sludge entering the IPLT Keputih in 2022. Several scenarios were developed to fully utilize the idle capacity of the SSC and GT units. The scenarios include the optimization of the SSC unit through improved desludging services, the optimization of the SSC and GT through improved non-fecal sludge management services for restaurants, as well as the implementation of a blended approach to improve the overall service of IPLT Keputih.
