Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze students’ perceptions and difficulties in doing online English exercises by using Quizizz. The researcher used an online questionnaire and interview as the instrumentation. The researcher used cluster random sampling to choose the sample. The sample of this research consisted of 35 students of K3’2018 English Education at Universitas Negeri Padang. In this study, the researcher used descriptive quantitative as a research design. There were two aspects of perception used in this research: perceived ease of use and perceived enjoyment. Findings from data analysis show that students perceived positively both aspects. It shows that students agree that Quizizz is easy to use, easy to access, interesting and fun, and can be used in daily online English exercises. The difficulties faced by the students were duration, slow internet connection, and uncomfortable features.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the listening, speaking, reading, and writing obstacles faced by PGSD international class students 2019 in using English as a medium of instruction. Data was collected from 21 international class PGSD students in the 2019 entry year at Universitas Negeri Padang. In collecting data, the students were asked to fill out a questionnaire consisting of 41 questionnaire for 55 minutes. The results showed that these students had many obstacles in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In other words, students are classified as having obstacles in using English as medium of instruction. In this case, the lecturers were asked to pay more attention to the student learning process such as often listening to western music, trying to talk to each other between students, reading texts, and writing things down about English texts.

Abstract

This research purpose to examine students’ perceptions toward the use of short videos based social media in learning English. The writer used an online questionnaire and interview for this research, which included 33 statements for questionnaire and 8 key questions for interview. The participants were 34 students from third year at English Department Universitas Negeri Padang. The findings from the data analysis, most of the students give a positive perception on the use of social media in learning English. The students used social media for learning and improving their English skill. They chose YouTube as the most frequently used application to improve their English skill. Then, they stated that using social media make them happy, challenged and helped when learning English. The students also mentioned that learning English can add new knowledge, develop their skills in speaking and writing and social media can improve their listening skill. Besides, there were several perspective faced by students, they get confused when learning English and do not know who to ask and they feel bothered with advertisement suddenly appeared when their learning English in social media.

Abstract

This research was intended to find out the translation acceptability made by English department students about pun in humour text. this research is descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research were students of translation class, selected by using cluster random sampling techniques. The technique of data collection was using translation test. The finding of the student acceptability was scored by using Nababan’s TQA model. the result of this research show that students’ translation in translating pun as humour were mostly in less acceptable.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the types of self-revision done by the English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang in translating an analytical exposition text from Bahasa Indonesia into English and to find out kinds of online resources used by the English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang in doing self-revision in translating an analytical exposition text this research used a descriptive qualitative method. The participants of this study were three English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang in academic year 2020-2021. The data in this research were the translation process collected by using Translog II and Camtasia Studio 8. The findings of this research were (1) the type of self-revision most frequently used by the students was word substitution with the frequency f 30.1% and (2) Google translate was the kind of online resources most frequently used by the students in doing self-revision in their translation process. From this research, it is concluded that self-revision has an essesntial role in the translation process.

Abstract

This article deals with the use of google form as an assessment tool in english subject at SMAN 2 SOLOK. The research undertaken aimed to know how do teachers and students perceive about google form as an assessemnt tool in english subject. This study was descriptive qualitatie research. The participants of the research were  70 students as representative of Natural science class in XI grade at SMAN 2 SOLOK. The instrumentation of this research were collected from interview with teachers and questionnaire for students. As for the points to the instrumentations there were aspect of validity, reliability, efficiency, economical, direction, and interest. The findings of this research shows that both teachers and students have good perception about the use of google form as assessment tool in english.

Abstract

A number of morphological errrors can be found in students’ English compositions of application letter. The errors were possibly caused by a lack of students understanding about the rules in morphology.The purposes of this research were to explain the (1) morphological errors, (2) the frequencies of morphological errors,  and (3) the sources of errors in students’ English compositions of application letter. The research applied a descriptive method. The data from students’ compositions of application were collected by using documentation technique. The research results indicated that there were two categories of morphological error, specifically noun morphological errors (indicated by the problems with noun plural –s) and verb morphological errors indicated by the  problems with present third person singular –s). The most common errors were noun morphological errors. Furthermore, there are two sources of errors found in the application letters of students. They were interlingual errors (transfer of morphological elements) and intralingual & development errors. (overgeneralization & ignorance of rule restriction).

Abstract

This study aims to find out professional development strategies done by English teachers’ to improve their pedagogic competence and professional competence during online teaching at SMPN Batang Anai. There were 8 English teachers as the research subject of this qualitative. They were interviewed by using the semi-structured interview. The result of the study found that English teachers at SMPN Batang Anai implemented several strategies to improve their pedagogic competence, including team teaching, peer coaching, analyzing critical incidents, and teacher support groups. While to improve their professional competence they have done: self- monitoring, workshop, keeping a teaching journal and case analysis. While, to improve both the pedagogic competence and professional competence of English teachers, it is suggested to them to implemented more and professional development strategies.

Abstract

This study was aimed to describe students’ common errors in constructing passive voice in explanation text by English Department Students of Universitas Negeri Padang who took Academic Writing class. It was aimed to find students common errors in writing explanation text. This research was descriptive method research. The sample of this research was the K2-K5 2019 students. The research was taken based on simple random sampling. This research was conducted by using students’ final writing test in academic writing from 27 students in order to find the common error in students’ writing. The finding show that the most common error made by the students’ in constructing passive voice were omission error with 47 errors with 22 omission errors in auxiliary be, 20 omission errors in auxiliary to be and 5 omission errors in preposition. Misinformation errors 24 errors in total with 18 errors in misinformation auxiliary, 5 errors in misinformation past participle

Abstract

This research is an experimental research. This research employed pre-experimental design using quantitative approach with one group pre-test and post-test design. The quantitative data are obtained from the teacher's final video recording. The research aims to determine the effectiveness of reflective practice with video recording on English teachers’ teaching performance in UNP. The population of this research was English teachers of PPG participants of Universitas Negeri Padang in Academic Year 2021. The research sample was 19 In-service English Teachers of Teachers Certification Program (PPG) of Universitas Negeri Padang. As this is the quantitative research, the researcher used the Paired Sample T-test in SPSS 22 for Windows to analyze the data. It is found that the mean score of teachers’ teaching performance has decreased by 4.21 points, bringing the average score down from 83.49 to 79.28. Therefore, the degree of significance of 2.5% or 0.025 was used by the researcher, hence, it is found that the significance (2-tailed) value on teachers’ teaching performance was 0.029 > 0.025 which means that H0 was accepted and Ha was rejected. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the use of reflective practice with video recording has no significant effect on English teachers’ teaching performance.
