Abstract

The process of designing motifs is one of the stages in making batik work before processing. This process requires creativity and knowledge in making something into a motif. In the batik design competition held by the City of South Tangerang in 2023, one work was won with the title "Triasih Nawasena". The aim of this research is to examine aesthetics and describe meaning through a semiotic approach. The research method uses descriptive qualitative with data collection through observation, semi-structured interviews and literature study. The interview was conducted with Septi Rahmawati as the winner of the competition and owner of the work. The research results show that the "Triasih Nawasena" batik design has three motif elements, namely the main motif, complementary motifs and filling motifs or isen-isen. These motifs complement each other with the main motif being made larger but the number is not too dominant compared to the complementary motifs. Meanwhile, isen-isen is used to create texture in certain motifs. So that the overall design has design elements such as points, lines, shapes, textures, space and color in each motif and becomes one unit. All of the motifs on this batik have meanings that represent typical objects in South Tangerang City.

Abstract

This study examines how Javanese traditional aesthetics are preserved and recontextualized through costume characters in the Gadis Kretek film series. As visual media increasingly shapes contemporary fashion discourse, film operates as a cultural agent that constructs and communicates meanings of traditional dress within specific socio-cultural contexts. In Gadis Kretek, costume design is not merely decorative but is deeply embedded in the narrative, representing Javanese women’s identities within the socio-historical context of kretek culture. The series portrays women across different social positions, from aristocratic figures to female laborers in the kretek industry, where costume becomes a key visual element in expressing class distinction, gender roles, and cultural expectations. This research employs a qualitative approach using visual semiotic analysis, focusing on denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings of costume elements. The analysis explores how visual elements such as kebaya, batik motifs, textile materials, and accessories function as cultural signs that reflect social hierarchy, femininity, labor identity, and historical context. Particular attention is given to how variations in material quality, silhouette, and styling construct contrasting representations of Javanese women. The findings show that costume characters function as cultural signifiers that articulate Javanese femininity, class distinction, and labor identity, while also reinforcing cultural narratives rooted in tradition. At the same time, the use of traditional materials and craftsmanship reflects values aligned with sustainable fashion practices, particularly in terms of cultural preservation, local knowledge transmission, and continuity of artisanal practices. This study highlights how film, through costume design, not only preserves Javanese traditional aesthetics but also actively reinterprets them within contemporary visual culture.

Abstract

The national batik industry faces challenges in increasing production efficiency without sacrificing traditional values and environmental sustainability. One of the current challenges lies in the limited flexibility of conventional canting cap tools in accommodating diverse motif variations, which may affect production efficiency and material utilization. This research aims to develop a canting cap based on a modular design that allows batik artisans to arrange, replace, and combine stamp elements as needed. The research method uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with a design thinking and participatory design model. The process includes problem identification, prototype design, testing, and evaluation with batik artisans. The research results produced a prototype of a modular canting cap made from recycled duplex paper with three mechanism configurations: modular Mechanical interlocking, modular light magnetic locking, and modular strong magnetic locking. The strong magnetic locking configuration proved to be the most ideal because it is stable, precise, and supports the principle of zero waste. This innovation contributes to production efficiency, waste reduction, and supports the transformation of batik into a sustainable creative industry.
