Abstract

Title: Architectural Conservation Perspective In Javanese Community Traditionally, Indonesian, with tropical climate, use wooden material for their building. The consequences of that material and the tropical climate is building cannot durable compare stone material. The building needs renewal more frequently and sometimes reconstruction. This study focus in Java building (houses) and their culture. In Javanese manuscripts (primbon), repairing the house is the same level with build the new one. To repair or to build the house for Javanese is not only the technical aspect (like structure or the form), but also about the connection with nature and their expectation in the future. Based on that understanding what the meaning of the conservation in Javanese culture? The subject for this study is architectural Javanese manuscripts (Primbon, Kawruh Kalang, and Kawruh Griya). This study uses hermeneutics method by Paul Ricouer. There are three steps: step one is to build the conservation understanding in Javanese culture, using content analysis. Step two is validation. This step using Ngibikan Village for case study. Step three is discussion. This step exploring the philosophical aspect in Javanese culture and compare with Ricouer thinking about „history, memory and forgetting?. The result of this exploration studies that for Javanese culture, conservation not only discuss about building. Based on Javanese philosophy that live only „stop? for drink (urip mung mampir ngombe), the conservation is a process, not result; the conservation is dynamic or change, not permanent or unchanged.

Abstract

Title: Study on the Location of Surakarta's Forts (1672, 1743, 1756, 1832) The Fortress in Surakarta (Vastenburg) was established in 1745 (Soedarmono, Kusumastuti, 2002). Some documents mention that the fort was built in 1743 referring to it as the De Grootmoedigheid (De VOC Site, 2015).The purpose of this paper is to discuss the possibility that there might be some other fortresses in Surakarta. This argument is based on descriptions given by William Barrington D'Almeida in Java documented in his book Live in Java: with Sketches of the Javanese, Vol. II in 1864 in which it is stated that a fort was established in Surakarta in 1672, that was built based on Vauban and Descartes design ideas. There is further evidence: A map of "geprojecteerde fort van Soeracarta" dated to the year 1756 which turned out to be matching closely to the fortress?s remains that can be seen today on the aerial photographs of the suburbs of Bengawan Semanggi. An analysis will be applied to proof the locations of several fortresses in Surakarta build in 1672,1743,1756 and 1832 based on documents, maps and aerial photographs. The result of this paper is a list and description of fortresses in Surakarta.

Abstract

Title: Urban Signage as Philosophical Reinforcement Main Axis of Yogyakarta The history search of space-forming structure of Yogyakarta shows an axis or pivot that forms the main hall corridor of the city. The axes are connected to the point of the city elements in the form of buildings starting from the White Pal Monument (Tugu Pal Putih) building in the north of the city, the Sultan Palace in the middle of the city, and Panggung Krapyak in the south of the Palace. The axis series are called as philosophical axis of Yogyakarta. These axes have a very important value considering to its position in the main pivot of the city. It will certainly bring its consequence on all of the physical elements that form the region. One of these referred elements is the sign elements. The definition of the sign elements is landmark buildings, gates, nodes, billboards, traffic signs, information boards, art media (murals), monuments (sculptures), and the installations of three dimension art in the public space. The result of the identification in the field shows that, the first, the presence of the signs along the axis tend to be without special characters (distinct character), so the formed character of the space is closed to the other locations. The second, the existence of advertisement media or information boards whether commercial, social, or information from the government tend to be unorganized and dominate the available spaces. The specific elements in the form of work of art installation, monuments, gates, and heritage buildings that have already existed and form a special character to the region that impressed overwhelmed by the presence of advertising media and information boards so it is felt to be lost from the sight. The rearrangement of the advertising media and information boards, also the development of sign elements that have a good synergy will contribute to the value strengthening of philosophical axis of Tugu Pal Putih and Panggung Krapyak of Yogyakarta.
