Abstract

Title: The City of Probolinggo: From Panopticon to Fragmented Power The City of Probolinggo, was designed during the Dutch colonial administration. It is very clearly shows the pattern of the city as a city-scale panopticon, as it is mentioned in the theory of Jeremy Bentham. The city layout could be explained as follow: the resident's office (regional leader) becomes the center (as well as the supervisor) of a linear and straight government environment from the south (Jalan Raya Pos) to the north (Probolinggo Lama port). The Probolinggo resident office can spatially "over look" the area to the direction of north, starting from the square, then train station, then the warehouses until it ends at the port located in the Madura Strait. The power of the panopticon is not just a matter of political space, but also includes it as a defense space, economic space, social space and even cultural space. When compared with current conditions, so now the power has changed the pattern from the centralized to more fragmented, as Richard Rorty's understanding of 'the breaking of the great mirror of the universe'.There is no longer a dominant center (and at the same time overseeing), all have their own strength to show themselves. Central to the current administration is the office of the mayor of Probolinggo, whose position has shifted from the old resident's office (now the Kodim 0820 headquarters) to the west. The area of the square was then only a mere symbolic area. The train station has turned into a means of transportation, especially for humans, it is no longer a semi-passive international commodity transporter, its relationship with the port has also been severed. The weakness, between the elements of the city to be like not connected, there is no synergy between one another.

Abstract

Title: The Development of Residential District based on Local Identity on Waterfront Area at Pasar Lama Tangerang The waterfront edges along Cisadane river considered as one of the environmental assets in the area of Pasar Lama (Old Town Market) in the city of Tangerang. However, such valuable asset is neglected due to current urban planning issues specifically on the placement of residential district and land-use planning within Pasar Lama adjacent context. This might caused disintegration between the residential and the commercial areas as the objective of a city to create a sense of place– it’s also diminished the identity of Pasar Lama (Old Town Market) as a Chinatown on the banks of the Cisadane River. This research study aim to raise several questions, namely: what are the criteria for a proper residential neighborhood in the context of the waterfront area, what is the function of residential district that has its own particular identity and how does it suitable for the particular context of waterfront area in Pasar Lama (Old Town Market), and how does the concept of identity could be applied on the waterfront area, in the Tangerang’s Pasar Lama (Old Town Market). This research study based on data collected from literature studies, field observations and on-site interview. The literature study discuss the functions of identity for a residential district, waterfront area and Pasar Lama (Old Town Market). Field observation studies were carried out to examine the theory and analyze the function of residential neighborhood, building accessibility, supporting facilities for residential areas, and Pasar Lama (Old Town Market) identity. The results of this study are finding the residential functions in which aligned with the parameters on residential design in the waterfront area and the local identity of the Tangerang Pasar Lama (Old Town Market). It aims to make the Pasar Lama (Old Town Market) areas to create and establish the local identity reflecting tourism, commercial and residential neighborhood, in addition to the mixed-use development on the waterfront area around the banks of the Cisadane river. Lastly, this research study also attempt to re-configure the land- use planning as well as strategize on how to locate the residential district that supports the relationship to its adjacent commercial areas.

Abstract

Title: Streetscape as a Formation of Area Character in Rungkut Madya Street Surabaya Urban areas are always dynamic where some regions develop more rapidly than other regions. Rungkut Madya street as a collector road has undergone many changes along with the construction of MERR road and OERR road plans by the Surabaya City Government and East Java Provincial Government. There is no integration of area arrangement at Rungkut Madya street that is able to characterize and provide visual - spatial quality that is able to improve the physical condition of the area. Meanwhile landscape quality (streetscape) needs to be considered in road design, referring to good streetscape criteria (Moughtin, 1999). The research method chosen is exploratory and descriptive. The description is focused on the authenticity of the shape and character of the area in Rungkut Madya street to explore existing city elements. Data collection more describes the conditions of reality and potential on Rungkut Madya street which are arranged in a mapping. Furthermore, these results are explored using Character Appraisal Research. The analysis is carried out qualitatively and supported by simple quantitative analysis. This research is expected to be able to produce an urban treatment that can identify the quality of the environment to be a special criterion in improving the quality of the environment and the identity of the Rungkut Madya street as an education, trade and service area.

Abstract

Title: Development of Inclusive Hanger Design to Facilitate Clothes Drying Activities Laundry activities, including drying are still recommended to be done by the elderly independently. However, the decline in the physical condition of the elderly, including a decrease in the balance of body position, cannot be avoided. In the observation at the GKJ Gondokusuman nursing home, the drying place is uses a rope on the roof or pole that is quite high from the reach of the elderly hand. When drying clothes, the elderly must stretch their arms and tiptoe because of the differences in height of the clothesline. This condition can increase the risk of accidents for the elderly who lose balance. This study aims to develop a product to dry the laundry and reduce the distance between the users with a high clothesline. This product development was using design research and product design. The research method was based in ergonomics knowledge through an inclusive design approach. The techniques used were behavioral observation, assessment of body activities, like Nordic Body Map (NBM) and Rapid Entire Body Assignment (REBA). The results of the NBM stated that the elderly experienced pain in the right side of the body, while the results of the REBA assessment showed a score of 10. This condition showed that the elderly posture while drying still had a high risk of injury. As the results of these studies, the product is designed with a function to hang laundry that make user's body position more balanced because there is no need to stretch arms and tiptoe too high. Users also easily put clothes on the hanger because there is a grip feature for both hands.

Abstract

Title: Study of Space Changing and Soundmark in Tamansari Heritage Tourism Area, Yogyakarta Tamansari area is an area of historical value. Until now, this region has been conserved and used as a heritage tourism. The Tamansari site, which has not been used anymore since the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono III, has caused the growth of residential areas around it. This causes a change in the solid void of the Tamansari area. Changes in the existing building structure create differences in the soundscape of the area that was once the location of the palace retreat and is now a heritage tourism area. In this study will discuss the changes that occur in the mass management of buildings in the Tamansari area that will affect the environmental acoustics of the area. This research method uses qualitative deductive method by comparing the shape of the space during the active period of the building as the resting of the Keraton family with the current building mass discussed with the theory of space and acoustic environment. The results of this study are changes in ground figures and linkages showing changes in the soundmark of the Tamansari area. Changing ground figures make the impact of increasingly diverse activities appear. Soundmark changed from the dominant calm voice to the nois dominant. The soundmark area changes from sounds that support a sacred atmosphere with sounds that are due to building density. This change in soundmark creates a change of sense of place from the Tamansari area.

Abstract

Title: Village Preparedness Against Landslide Disaster Disasters that have previously occurred can almost be guaranteed that they would most likely reoccur without our knowing when and where they would take place once again. Maximum preparation and understanding about what we should do during events of disaster are substantial measures that we must take. In addition, knowledge or experiences relating to disasters should also be passed down to the next generation. This study employed methods of in-depth interviews and direct observations to acquire data regarding indicators of disasters found in the village of Kebonharjo. The interviews were performed with the villagers, while observations were carried out in a number of locations where landslides had occurred. The acquired results were subsequently analyzed in order to gain an understanding of the most significant indicators that can be used as a standard for the villagers to be prepared in the event of a disaster. The availability of written knowledge and documentation pertaining to these indicators will consequently lead to such knowledge being more widely known by the community and they can also serve as a useful resource for the villagers when they find locations that are considered to show indications of disaster, in which they can then make a quick identification of the situation. Transforming oral knowledge into a written one is admittedly an appropriate choice in order to strengthen the village’s preparedness against disaster.

Abstract

Title: Residential Integration in TOD to Overcome the Transit Problem in Pasar Lama Area, Tangerang The Pasar Lama (Old Town Market) area is known as a highly developing area in the city of Tangerang. This area facilitated with a commuter train station used by people commuted from Tangerang to Jakarta in daily basis – both for transitting and shopping purposes. Tangerang Station is the main train station for commuters’ from-and-to Jakarta; therefore, urban issues arise in the main urban nodes of the area, specifically the main boulevard near the station and the market. Issues such as transportation traffic, pedestrian congestion, informal street-vendors activities, and the arrangement of residential areas are major concern that needs to be addressed in the purpose of creating a good urban public space in the region. The solution to overcome this problem is to apply a concept for a TOD (Transit Oriented Development). TOD is a sustainable transportation system approach that provides accessibility and alternative modes of transportation. With the implementation of TOD in the transit station area, it is expected that the entire Pasar Lama area will be developed and created a good urban public space. This research study aims to answer several research questions, for instance: how does the concept of the TOD is able to integrate a residential program into the development and create a successful an urban public space as a transit area in the area of Pasar Lama, Tangerang. This research begins with context analysis based on several theories about urban dimension, human scale and key factors of a TOD. Precedent studies and observations on surrounding site, serve as references in analyzing and proposing draft concepts for this particular neighborhood. This research study will have an outcome in the form of design concept proposal that allow TOD to incorporate residential, parking, commercial, and open space as one district to revitalize the congested neighborhood in the Pasar Lama area, Tangerang.
