Abstract

Title: The Relation of Physical Setting Concept and Behavior Concept in the Front of Rectorate Building, Case Study: Yogyakarta State University Students are the "actors" in the university because of their activities. Students need a certain space in the environment around the university. It becomes interesting when students do their activities around the building that is also the environment for rector and university employees, those happened at the area in front of Yogyakarta State University (UNY) rectorate building. There was a cozy quality (fit) space in there based on perception (cognition and schemata) and adaptation of UNY students for area of the UNY rectorate building. There were some quality factors (property) which is included as environment (physical setting) that affect the activity (behavior) of UNY students. The correlation between activity (behavior pattern) and specific environmental order (physical setting) interpreted as behavior setting. The method used is deductive-qualitative with rationalist paradigm. The data obtained were the result of observation, behavior mapping, interviews, questionnaires, with induction analyzed. The results are: 1) the vertical property provided physical comfort and social comfort; 2) the proximity property provided environmental comfort; 3) the artificial lighting distribution property provided social comfort; 4) the property of which describes the situation of natural protection provided physical comfort and environmental comfort.

Abstract

Title: Postcolonial Study towards Jember Alun-alun Area: Efforts to Explore the Potential of Creative City The Alun-alun is an important area in the city in Java, which has existed since pre-colonial era (can be traced back to the Majapahit era), which was later adapted creatively by the Dutch in colonial era to the post-independence of Indonesia. Studies on the Alun-alun is mostly done historically, symbolic or functional, whereas this study viewed from the perspective of postcolonial, that reverse point of view: from the square is considered passive and influenced, being square is active and can be aligned with the global trend. The research method is qualitative research, with a view creativity of Jember society in the process of changes. This study combines direct observation, observe documents and interview. Alun-alun became a media of "control" by the Dutch (towards Indonesian/Jember society) to the New Order era (towards the people of Indonesia/Jember), society is assumed to be liyan (others). Then look for new forms to imitate and reverse of what has been done by the "authorities" so that an alun-alun will be hybrid, diaspora and transculturation also occur. Jember alun-alun area from postcolonial view has a dynamic and adaptive character. Community and Jember alun-alun are not a passive entity that is marginalized and only accept influence from the outside, but they are the subject of the creative changes, to be aligned with a more advanced entity.

Abstract

Title: The Development of Suburb Residential Area Based on Transit Oriented Development (TOD) The rapid growth and development of the city has impacted on the increasing of city population and traffic density which lead to various urban problems. The development of suburbs as a satellite city is considered as an appropriate solution to reduce the main city‘s load. This area could be developed into residential uses to provide living area for commuters. The railway that connects Solo and Wonogiri is considered as a major potential to create the integration between Solo as the main city and other areas as regional supports. Pasar Nguter Station is located on the route of Solo-Wonogiri railway and has great potential. The aim of this research is to examine and explore possibilities of Pasar Nguter Station to be developed as residential area based on Transit Oriented Development (TOD). This research will assess the existing condition surrounds Pasar Nguter Station based on the principal aspects of TOD such as mobility, land use, intermodal network, etc. to analyze the gap between existing and ideal conditions to formulate the most appropriate regional development strategy.

Abstract

Title: Exploration of Panopticism and Architecture of Control in Building Guidance for Catholic Church Michel Foucault introduces a mechanism to increase surveillance powers through architectural arrangement, referred to as panopticism. The connection between control of architecture and panopticismin the Catholic church is the main problem of this research. The purpose of this study is to determine the panopticism in architectural field, examine the relationship between principles of panopticism with architectural theory, especially the theory of the architecture of control, to produce a benchmark that can be used to analize the regulation in Catholic church. Through descriptive analysis and critique interpretive method, the results obtained are that panopticon and panopticism are also part of the architecture of control. From the theory of panopticon, there are six elements of panopticism can be derived (segmenting, grouping, control activities, orientation, hierarchy and control system); the most influential element in the architecture is the element of Control System. To analyze the church, we are using normative and interpretive criticism methods. The results is that the Catholic church has a system of controlling and regulating the discipline panopticism (especially panopticism supervision from the supervised vision) using the general guidance of Roman Missale as the catholic standard rules.

Abstract

Title: Understanding Interior as a Connector Interior design is a discipline that is very close to the complexities and the needs of human life. However, the intepretation and practice of interior design are often limited to decoration and contents within the physical boundaries of architecture. This paper aims to provide another perspective regarding the concept of interior that is, as a significant connector between humans and their living environment along with architecture, so that the methods and practice of interior design as well as architecture may expand more than what has been observed today. The paper is a result of a qualitative research through literature review and exploration of case studies. Results conclude to several interior and architectural design techniques based on the perception of interior as a ?connector? that could be used, such as the blurring of physical boundaries, programmatic manipulation, innovation of material continuity and configuration of architectural elements into interior elements. Through the physical as well as conceptual manipulation of space, the intepretation of interior design would no longer be limited to the contents within the physical boundaries of architecture but rather a truly important connector along with architecture, between humans and their living environment.

Abstract

Title: Three Dimensional Basic Design Knowledge as Thinking Tools for Understanding the Shape, Space and Volume The consciousness of observing the shape and space of an object, whether large or small, is the sensitivity that becomes a designer of three-dimensional objects. A product form is created with full awareness by the designer, not by itself appearing. In addition to the function of the design object, in a design process there is a styling stage, aesthetic value visually, a form that follows the function or shape that follows the material. Aesthetic value in a design product that can not be separated from the ability of the designer with visual experience. The ability and sensitivity to observe and create an aesthetic visual form should be instilled since someone declares himself to be a designer or planner. Design areas such as architecture, interior, urban design, area and also design product are demanded for their ability to sensitize observing and design a space, volume and shape. This study is based on observations on a group of design students and literature studies. Based on observations over time, the spatial thinking capacity of each person is different, as is the ability to create an aesthetic value in a design. Everyone has different absorbtive power and creativity.

Abstract

Title: Potential Development of Tunjungan Triangle Blocks As Part of Image of The CityMaker Good urban space is created from a good urban planning also. In the planning phase of the city, it is simulated how a good city consists of well synchronized urban components. Tunjungan, as one of the important formers of Surabaya character, is the most dynamic developed block. The gap between good planning and real condition, was become larger due to partially development. The diversity of land ownership, the capabilities of each developer and so on, are some of the causes. Yet the success of an urban architectureis affected by the ability of spatial planning and city planning collectively.Integrated development involving all aspects of urban space constituency is something that is expected to happen. This study attempted to read the conditions of the triangular block of Tunjungan from urban planning theory perspectives, then reflected on the real conditions in the field. The goal is to get a recommendation based on the development potential of urban elements that will strengthen the identity of the city of Surabaya itself.
