Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to separate and identify the main components of essential oils from fresh clove and dried clove leaves through a steam distillation process. The resulting are dried with Na2SO4 and obtained 0.6203 mL of fresh clove oil and 2.2014 mL of dried clove oil. Clove oil was identified using IR and GC-MS. IR analysis shows that fresh oil has a wavelength of 3510.45-3448.72 cm-1 and the presence of an OH group, 2924.09-2846.93 cm-1, there is an aliphatic C-H group, 3070.68 cm-1 the presence of a benzene C-H group and 1604.77 cm-1 indicate the presence of benzene groups. Dry clove oil has a wavelength of 3518.16-3456.44 cm-1, the presence of OH groups, 2931,8-2846.3 cm-1, the presence of aliphatic C-H groups, 3070,68 cm-1 presence of C-H benzene groups and 1604,77 cm-1 indicate the presence of benzene groups. The results of the GC-MS chromatogram analysis of fresh clove oil and dried clove oil showed 7 peaks which showed 7 compounds. Of the 7 peaks produced, the highest peak has similarities with the chromatogram of eugenol and caryophyllene.

Abstract

The synthesis of materials made from FeSO4.7H2O, FeCl3.6H2O, and NH4OH hydrophilic materials has been carried out using coprecipitation method to produce Fe3O4 nanoparticle material. Analysis of the crystalline structure of Fe3O4 nanoparticles seen from the results of material characterization using X-Ray Diffractometer showed diffraction peaks namely (220) (311) (400) (511) (440) with the main peak at the index (311). Samples of Fe3O4 nanoparticles were modified with PEG-4000 polymer, emerging new diffraction peaks such as peaks with index (111), α- Fe3O4 peaks, γ-FeO (OH) peaks and α-FeO (OH) peaks. The emergence of these new peaks is due to the influence of the PEG-4000 polymer which directly shows the bond with the -OH (hydroxyl) group.

Abstract

Laundry wastewater is generated in large quantities will pollute the environment such as rivers and soil if thrown away without any prior treatment. Laundry wastewater treatment methods that have been carried out are easy and inexpensive for household scale and have been proven to reduce levels of organic pollutants. Two parameters that can indicate the presence of organic pollutants in laundry wastewater are Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). This study aims to determine the effect of the use of filtration media in the form of a combination of activated carbon adsorbent, zeolite, silica sand, anthracite and ferolite in reducing levels of BOD and COD in laundry wastewater. Based on the results of laboratory tests on the BOD and COD test parameters, it was found that after the filtration process there was a decrease in the BOD and COD levels in the laundry wastewater samples respectively by 53% and 54%. The results of the statistical analysis also showed that the presence of filtration treatment had a significant effect in reducing levels of BOD and COD in laundry wastewater samples. Thus, it can be concluded that the presence of filtration treatment is proven to significantly reduce BOD and COD levels which can also indicate decreased levels of organic pollutants contained in laundry wastewater.

Abstract

Chitin on crab shell waste can be obtained by fermentation process use Rhizopus oryzae. The objective of this research are to determine the optimum of water content on crab shell waste fermentation by Rhizopus oryzae for chitin production. Fermentation process is carried out for 72 hours, 5 of pH, 37oC, and 10% (v/w) of inoculum addition. Water content on fermentation process were varried whithin 40%, 50%, and 60% respectively. Fermentation process were carried out by 40% of water content reported as the optimum based on the deproteinization degree and the solubility in acidic solution.

Abstract

Geothermal energy depends on volcanic regions or plate subduction. Indonesia has geothermal potential due to the meeting of 3 (three) large plates. North Sulawesi is one of the areas located in the ring of fire. Some areas in the Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi province, were targeted for research because they have manifestations of geothermal such as hot pools, steaming ground, mud pools, and other manifestations. The research location is divided into 3 (three) locations around the Lahendong geothermal area, namely the Lahendong pine forest, the Toraget hot air area, and the hot springs in the village of Totolan. The results of sample and ploting tests in ternary diagrams show that all three geothermal manifestations have sulfuric acid type fluids. This type of geothermal fluid has a high SO4 content, while HCO3 and Cl values are low. Hot springs that have a type of sulfuric acid occur in active volcanic regions. This is supported by the lithology of three areas of manifestation which are composed of basalt resulting from volcanic rocks.

Abstract

Rice bran contained important bioactive phytochemical components such as tocopherol, tocotrienol, and γ-oryzanol, and one of the components of γ-oryzanol is stigmasterol. The aim of the present study was to isolate and identify stigmasterol in native red rice bran extract. The isolation of sterol from red rice bran extract was performed by using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and followed by identification by Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The TLC single spot originated from crude red rice hexane extract was observed at 365 nm UV and the FTIR spectra analysis result showed that the OH group was indicated by 3436,9 cm-1 absorption. While absorption regions of 2931,6 to 2852,5 cm-1 indicate the presence of single bond CH. The data of 1H-, 13C- and 2D-NMR of rice bran sterol indicated that the single spot obtained in TLC analysis was stigmasterol. It can be concluded that native red rice variety of North Sulawesi contained stigmasterol and potential as a native antioxidant sources.

Abstract

Essential oil of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans houtt) is one of the many potentials of nutmeg that has a high economic value although in North Sulawesi it has not been exploited to its full potential. This research was conducted to compare the yield and properties of Nutmeg oil extract from the seeds and mace of Talaud and North Minahasa-North Sulawesi. The oil extract was obtained by distillation and was further characterized in terms of color, solubility in ethanol, density, optical rotation, refractive index. Results of this research exhibited that oil of the mace of nutmeg from Talaud had a lighter appearance in color compared to that from North Minahasa, while the density of oil extracted from North Minahasa was more densed compared to Talaud in both seed and mace (0.923 and 0.938 respectively at 25°C). The reflective index of nutmeg oil from North Minahasa was slightly higher than of Talaud both from seed and mace (1.4834 and 1.493 at 25°C), while the optical rotations of oil extracted from the mace were between +6.90° to +9.80° and from the seed were +20.73° to +22.30°.
