Abstract

Speaking abilities are seen as crucial ability that students must possess. Many students, however, stay away from communicating in the target language due to a variety of causes. Because of the monotony of the educational procedure, many students are unmotivated to learn to speak. Students require a motivating alternative method to improve their speaking skills. As a result, storytelling is seen as an effective teaching approach. To share a story, storytelling combines a spoken narrative, several digital images, a soundtrack, and modern technologies. As a result, the purpose of this study is to assess vocational high school students' attitudes on the employment of storytelling strategies. This research used mixed method research with 26 participants of the XI class at one state Vocational School in Bandung. The research instruments were questionnaires and interviews. According to the findings of questionnaires and interviews, storytelling can motivate students to learn English, particularly in Speaking. Because storytelling is delivered in a captivating and intriguing manner, it can be an effective technique for teaching speaking. As an alternative approach for learning English, storytelling is recommended.

Abstract

In this paper, we explore practical strategies to enhance willingness to communicate (WTC) among elementary school students during English lessons. The study focuses on creating a supportive environment that encourages interaction and fosters confidence in communication. The research also aims to investigate the impact of communication strategy (CS) instruction on students’ attitudes toward communication. Specifically, it examines changes in WTC and confidence levels among fifth-grade students. The methodology involved designing a series of English lessons centered around interaction. Activities included exchanging business cards, sending birthday cards, and discussing timetables. Pre- and interim-questionnaires collected data on students’ self-assessment and reflections. The study focused on six students who exhibited notable changes in attitudes. The results showed that many students enjoyed communicating their thoughts and learning about others. Confidence levels increased as students actively participated in interactions. Successful experiences were linked to the teaching of CS expressions. Moreover, acceptance of others’ contributions played a crucial role in creating a safe space for communication. The study’s implications highlight the importance of fostering an accepting attitude toward others’ communication. Teachers can promote confidence by emphasizing receptive responses. Overall, the research underscores the significance of creating a positive classroom atmosphere for language learning, ultimately empowering students to express themselves effectively in a foreign language setting.

Abstract

The aim of the current study was to investigate the effectiveness of the use of Wordwall on the quality of students’ EFL writing skills. Wordwall, a web-based application, is one of the AI-based applications that is used to facilitate teaching-learning activities. It can help students in improving their writing skills, which is essential for EFL skills mastery. However, a lot of students had difficulty in attaining the skill because of some factors such as a lack of vocabulary and other grammar competencies. The data sources were from the result of the score in narrative fractured text made by students in Sekolah Menengah Atas (Senior High School). The method employed in this study was quantitative with an ex post facto design. The measurement of writing test as the data was measured using several criteria followed by a component of writing adapted from Heaton (1988) in Fitriani, et al. (2014). The components of writing skills consisted of content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. The result of this investigation indicated that a class taught along with Wordwall attained an average score of 16.17. Meanwhile, the average value for a class taught using a printed English textbook was 14.43. The results of the independent t-test had a significant difference of 0.000, which meant that it was significantly less than < 0.05. It revealed that the null hypothesis was disregarded, which implied that there was a significant variation in values of the class with used Wordwall (AI) and that without using the AI-based application, i.e., Wordwall. Therefore, it could be concluded that the students’ EFL writing skills who learned English by using Wordwall were better than those of printed English textbooks.

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the primary obstacles encountered by junior high school students when learning English. Conducted as a cross-sectional survey, data were gathered from 102 9th-grade students in three public schools in Parongpong using a Likert questionnaire and analyzed through mean scores. Findings revealed that the key barriers included students' tendency to use their native language, grammar errors, limited speaking opportunities outside school, fear of making mistakes, and restricted vocabulary. Additionally, challenges arose from listening materials' speed and complexity, unfamiliar topics and words, as well as nervousness. Furthermore, hurdles in reading practice, complex text structures, idea generation, spelling, paragraph organization, grammar, teacher's limited use of learning media, and cognitive attitudes were observed. These findings are expected to aid teaching efforts, particularly in addressing barriers for EFL learners.

Abstract

Figurative language aids the reader in understanding the author's goals in addition to making the material more entertaining to read. The following research questions will be addressed by this study by identifying the figurative language techniques and the interpretation of each figure of speech in the book The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle: Book 7. The following questions were addressed by this study: 1) What is the figure of resemblance or relationship used in the novel; 2) What is the figure of emphasis or understatement found from the novel? 3) What is the figure of sounds found in the novel; and 4) How many imageries are found in the novel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle Book 7 and the meaning? The research methodology used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The data are gathered by the researcher through data collecting from a range of books and library research. Based on the results, there is the figure of resemblance or relationship with 23 kennings, 4 personifications, and 12 synecdoche; the figure of emphasis or understatement with 5 paradoxes and the explanation of the climax; the figure of sounds with 35 onomatopoeias, 74 repetitions, assonance with repetition of the o͞o (u) sound, repetition of the ou sound, repetition of the ā (ei) sound, repetition of the i long sound, repetition of the ə sound, repetition of the ē (i) sound, and repetition of the ai sound; and 17 imageries. The most common use of figurative language categories is the figure of sounds with 35 onomatopoeias and 75 repetitions.

Abstract

This quantitative research investigates the influence of parenting styles on students’ attitudes toward learning English, including the descriptions of parenting styles and student attitudes toward learning English.  The study involved 146 students from public middle schools in Airmadidi District, North Minahasa Regency, selected based on availability and willingness.  Data was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including correlation and regression analysis.  The results showed that parents employ various parenting styles – authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive - at moderate levels, with no extreme preference for any style.  Despite this, students exhibited positive attitudes towards learning English, characterized by diligence and enthusiasm.  The permissive parenting style did not significantly influence students’ attitudes. However, both authoritative and authoritarian styles individually had a significant impact.  When the three parenting styles combined as predictors, permissive parenting remained insignificant, while authoritative and authoritarian styles significantly influenced students’ attitudes positively.  This suggests that a mix of supportive authoritative and directive authoritarian parenting can positively affect students’ attitudes toward learning English.

Abstract

This study examines the critical role that parents play in assisting their children in improving their English-speaking abilities through language learning activities carried out at home using the Narrative Inquiry approach. The research aims to provide a thorough understanding of how parent-child interactions affect language development in addition to formal education. Recognizing the importance of the home environment, the study intends to illuminate the unique contributions parents make to their children's English proficiency, emphasizing the necessity of a thorough approach to language learning. Using in-depth interviews to gather rich, qualitative data, the main technique is narrative inquiry. Parents talk about their experiences and methods for encouraging English speaking in the family. This method enables a detailed investigation of the complex relationships and narratives that emerge in the setting of parent-child language development. Preliminary findings highlight a diverse range of home-based language learning activities, such as interactive dialogues, storytelling, reading English book, watching videos, using online applications, and language-rich routines. The narratives provide insights into the unique strategies parents employ to cultivate their children's language skills, revealing a profound impact on English-speaking abilities.  Therefore, parents play a crucial role in helping their children develop their English-speaking skills.

Abstract

The exploration of factors affecting English-speaking skill remains a cornerstone in English language teaching research. However, a notable gap exists concerning the nuanced understanding of the affecting factors, especially within undergraduate contexts through the lens of Stephen Krashen's Second Language Acquisition Theory. This study explored the determinant factors influencing English-speaking skill among undergraduates studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL), using quantitative and qualitative approaches. By scrutinizing four essential domains – teacher and teaching-related aspects, curriculum and environmental factors, monitoring and linguistic, and affective and psychological factors – this research uncovers pivotal insights. The findings underscore that each of these factors significantly influences students’ speaking skill. The study highlights a need for active learning, authentic materials, and supportive environments to improve speaking skills. Furthermore, the findings indicate potential impediments of excessive grammar focus on fluency during spontaneous speech. Several strategies were unveiled to address the identified issues. The findings offer invaluable insights for educators, curriculum developers, and institutions regarding curriculum, teaching methods, and diverse strategies.

Abstract

Since it was first releasd in 2022, ChatGPT has rapidly become widespread as a well-known and widely used chatbot. This innovative tool has attracted interest from language teachers and researchers for its potential benefits in language learning and teaching. Despite this, there is very little scientific understanding of to what extent and how it is used for language learning and teaching purposes. To this end, this study aimed to investigate university level EFL instructors' awareness of ChatGPT's potential for language learning and teaching, and their perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of using it. A questionnaire consisting of open-ended and closed-ended questions was administered to 153 EFL instructors working in different universities in Türkiye. The study found that although participants were aware of ChatGPT's capabilities and found it very useful for material development and lesson planning, they were concerned about inaccuracies, unreliable information, prompt difficulties, ethical issues, overreliance, and ineffective outputs. The findings of this study present several important implications for the effective integration of AI tools like ChatGPT into language instruction.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the English language skills of junior high school students who have just graduated from elementary school, as well as identify problems in implementing English language learning in elementary school. This research was motivated by the interview result with junior high school teachers who stated that there are a big differences in English language skills among students who had just graduated from elementary school which became an obstacle in learning English process in junior high school, this was believed to occur due to issues in implementing English language learning in elementary school. This research used a mixed method with a research sample of 150 students from two junior high schools in the Sukabumi City and Sukabumi Regency areas. The results of this research show that the English language skills of students both in the city and regency show that more than 50% of students scored below 60 and fall into the category of very low English skills. This study reveals that English language education in elementary schools faces various challenges, including inconsistencies in the quality of English language teaching, gaps in access to English language teachers, limited use of teaching materials, learning methods and media. Despite these challenges, there is a high level of interest in English among students, indicating that with the right support, the implementation of English subject in elementary school will be better.
