Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of Augmented Reality (AR) on students’ vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Palu. Vocabulary is a fundamental aspect of language learning, yet many students struggle to master it due to lack of motivation and conventional teaching methods. To address this problem, the researcher applied AR-based learning using the Assemble Edu application, which provides 3D visuals and interactive features to improve engagement. This study used a quasi-experimental method with two groups: an experimental class that received AR-based instruction and a control class that received traditional instruction. Both classes were given a pre-test and post-test to measure vocabulary mastery. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental class, with an average post-test score of 82.00, compared to 59.80 in the pre-test. Meanwhile, the control class only increased from 63.00 to 72.40. Statistical analysis using SPSS showed that the difference between the two groups was significant (Sig. 2-tailed = 0.001), indicating that AR had a strong positive effect on vocabulary acquisition. These findings support previous research showing that AR enhances motivation, memory retention, and contextual understanding in language learning. The use of AR aligns with constructivist learning theory and supports the Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes student-centered and technology-integrated learning. In conclusion, AR-based learning can effectively improve students’ vocabulary mastery and is recommended as a modern instructional strategy in English language teaching

Abstract

The researchers used this research to identify the forms of resistance and subordination exhibited by female characters. The research utilized a descriptive, qualitative, and feminist approach, focusing on Simone de Beauvoir's concept of Otherness in The Second Sex. Data was gathered by carefully reading and observing Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, including narration, monologue, and character behaviors. Furthermore, the researchers determined that female characters (Estella, Miss Havisham, and Biddy) lose their subjectivity as a result of the subordination of women and societal expectations that required them to conform to traditional norms in the Victorian era. Women are defined as "other" rather than autonomous beings who stand alone, according to Beauvoir's idea of subordination. Therefore, as a form of resistance in Beauvoir's concept, female characters must conduct transcendence to pursue freedom to erase their Otherness. The resistance is found using Beauvoir's concept theory of women's existence. The concept is divided into three main points: women's intellect, being themselves, and concretizing themselves—the result of resistance shaped in the form of dialogue or narration in the novel. Additionally, the researchers use this research to gather relevant information for future studies and develop feminist analyses.

Abstract

This study explores EFL students' perceptions of using the Promova application to learn English vocabulary. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method with 30 XIth-grade students at a senior high school in Medan. Data were collected through Likert scale questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that students perceive Promova as a user-friendly, flexible, self-directed learning application. Interactive features, such as quizzes, flashcards, image illustrations, and AI-based pronunciation feedback, increase vocabulary memorization, enhance understanding, and boost learning motivation. While most students feel confident and enjoy learning with Promova, some remain neutral about its impact on long-term motivation. These findings suggest that Promova is an effective vocabulary-learning tool for EFL students. This study implies that mobile applications like Promova can be used as an engaging and tailored language learning media. This study contributes to the literature review by offering an understanding of students' experiences using the Promova application in Indonesian secondary schools, a topic rarely discussed in previous studies. Additionally, the results can be a useful reference for teachers, application developers, and future researchers when designing vocabulary learning media suited to students' needs and interests.

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the Islamic culture and its influence on the characters in the novel. The novel’s main background story takes place in Afghanistan, where Islam is deeply rooted in the society. The rooted belief in Islam shaped the culture of the Afghans. Through the lens of Clifford Geertz's theory of “Religion as Cultural System,” he observes that the practice of a culture often follows the teachings of a religion in the area. This analysis also draws on the opinions of some Islamic figures as a supporting theory to define the Islamic culture portrayed in the novel. This study found that Islamic cultures are portrayed in some chapters of the novel. Moreover, the results of this analysis provide evidence that Islam in Afghanistan significantly influences the country's culture. Since the religion is rooted in Afghanistan, some cultural values follow the belief of Islam found in the characters' daily interactions. They demonstrate how women should wear hijab, how Muslims perform their worship prayers, how a family stays connected, and how younger people should interact with older individuals.

Abstract

Drama, English Camp, and Tourism are considered effective strategies for improving students' conversational skills in secondary schools. However, studies exploring the integration of these three approaches are still limited. Addressing this gap, the present study aims to explore students’ experiences in an innovative English learning program, specifically through Drama (English Performance), English Camp, and Edutrip (Tourism), and to identify the benefits and challenges encountered in improving their speaking skills. The study is driven by students’ low interest and lack of self-confidence in speaking English in conventional classroom settings, highlighting the need for innovative and engaging learning environments. This research employed a qualitative method with a case study design. Data were collected through interviews and documentation involving six students from a global class at one Muhammadiyah junior high school in Surakarta who participated in the English Conversation Program. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the English Conversation Program offered enjoyable and contextual learning experiences, improving students’ confidence, fluency, pronunciation, and spontaneous speaking ability. The main challenges faced included pronunciation difficulties, anxiety, and limited vocabulary, which were addressed through self-practice, peer collaboration, and vocabulary preparation. This study highlights the importance of experiential learning in enhancing students’ English speaking skills.

Abstract

Formative assessment plays a critical role in supporting student learning by providing continuous feedback throughout the instructional process. However, many teachers have yet to implement formative assessment effectively, particularly in English language instruction under the Emancipated (Merdeka) Curriculum in Indonesia. This qualitative study investigates the implementation of formative assessment in an English class at SMP Daarul Qur’an Ungaran, a junior high school located in West Ungaran District. Data were collected through preliminary observations, classroom observations, interviews, and document analysis involving one English teacher and 28 eighth-grade students. Findings indicate that the teacher partially implements formative assessment strategies, including quizzes, oral questioning, and student reflections. However, certain aspects such as grammar and pronunciation assessments were found to be underutilized. Students generally responded positively to the feedback they received, though some formative techniques were inconsistently applied. The study highlights both the potential and the challenges of implementing formative assessment under the Emancipated Curriculum. It offers practical insights for educators and policymakers on how to improve assessment literacy and better integrate formative strategies into classroom practices to support student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Heroic narratives in literature traditionally tend to be dominated by male characters with physical strength, dominance, and victory characteristics. In contrast, female characters often serve as passive and domestic roles. This study examines the construction of a female hero in Markus Zusak's The Book Thief through Christopher Vogler's (2007) archetypes and the hero's journey. Using a qualitative approach, this study reveals how the character Liesel Meminger builds her heroic identity through courage, empathy, and literacy in the middle of the Nazi regime's oppression. The findings show that Liesel represents a heroine who prioritizes emotional resilience and the power of words over physical strength. Other archetypes support her and follow the twelve stages of the hero's journey. The novel actively challenges traditional hero archetypes by presenting a heroic narrative that ends in loss, not victory, but is still full of meaning and strength. This research enriches literary and gender studies by highlighting the representation of female heroes in contemporary fictional narratives.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of the Lingodeer application as a medium for improving students' vocabulary at a Private Islamic Junior High School in Medan, Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through questionnaires and student interviews. Lingodeer was selected due to its interactive design, accessibility, and focus on grammar and vocabulary, essential components in language acquisition. The results show that students became more enthusiastic, engaged, and motivated when learning vocabulary through the app. They reported improved vocabulary recall, pronunciation, and interest in English lessons. However, several challenges were noted. Some students faced difficulties pronouncing unfamiliar words, and the app's premium version was considered expensive, with limited variety in its gamification features and supplementary content. Despite these limitations, the findings suggest that Lingodeer is an effective and enjoyable tool for enhancing students' English vocabulary. It offers valuable support for language teachers seeking engaging alternatives to traditional instruction.

Abstract

Mental health is an interesting topic to discuss in the digital age. Many media outlets discuss the concept of mental health, one of which is through literary works in the form of music. Music, which consists of various song lyrics, can be a medium of expression for conveying messages about an individual's psychological condition. One of the variables that plays an important role in the realization of mental health is the meaning of life and song titles that describe the concept of meaning of life, such as Teramini by Ghea Indrawari.  This study aims to deeply reflect on the concept of meaning of life in the lyrics of "Teramini," which has a positive impact on mental health, a topic that has not been explored previously. This study employs Viktor Frankl's theory of meaning in life, which explains that the sources of meaning in life consist of attitudinal, experiential, and creativity values. The object of this study is the lyrics of "Teramini." This study uses a qualitative method with thematic analysis as the analytical technique. Thematic analysis was chosen to understand the appropriate themes of the source of meaning in life from each lyric of the song Teramini. The results of this study indicate that the dominant source of meaning in life in the song Teramini is attitudinal values, followed by experiential values. Creativity values was not found in this study. Through the attitudinal and experiential values, individuals are able to accept all difficulties and view them as part of life's episodes, enabling them to endure and face them effectively, which positively impacts mental health. The findings of this study also indicate that literary works in the form of song lyrics can serve as an effective educational tool to provide an understanding of the concept of sources of meaning in life that influence mental health among listeners or community
