Abstract

This research is an analysis of the novel Girl, Woman, Other (2019) by Bernardine Evaristo. The purpose of the analysis is to reveals the issue of structural oppression towards black women and the struggle against the structural oppression in the novel  Girl, Woman, Other (2019) by Bernardine Evaristo. The issue of structural oppression refers to the form of structural oppression against black women and the form of struggle that characters do against the oppression towards them. This analysis is using the concept of intersectionality from feminism study which proposed by Kimberlee Crenshaw. The analysis uses of the concept is based on the interpretation of text and context of the novel. The analysis also uses fictional devices such as plot and setting to expose the meaning. The result of this study shows the form of structural oppression against black women and the struggle that black women show against the oppression.

Abstract

Impoliteness is a bad attitude and occurred when the speaker face attacks the hearer and the hearer receives the face attack from the speaker or both of them. Categories of impoliteness based on (Culpeper, 2016) are bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mocking politeness and withhold politeness. This research is aimed to find out type impoliteness used by the male and female characters in Wolf of the Wall Street movie. This research is descriptive comparative. The data were collected from all texts which are transcribed from spoken ones used by the male and female characters in the movie Wolf of the Wall Street. The result showed that the total of impoliteness is 46, with 31 impoliteness from male characters and 15 impoliteness from female characters. Then, in the category of purpose of power, there were only 13 purpose of power in male characters, but none in female characters.

Abstract

The use of abbreviation is often used in news writing in order to conserve the news space to the readers. So that abbreviation can make the news become clearer, simple and easy to understand by the readers. Abbreviation can be found easily whether it in newspaper or on website such as KOMPAS.com. This research is aimed to figure out the types of abbreviation on KOMPAS.com website especially at technology section. The source of the data of this research is news-text in Bahasa Indonesia which from  KOMPAS.com website, at technology section especially at gadget and hardware sections, which is issued on 1st January 2017 until 30th December 2018. This research uses descriptive method. The data analysis is done based on abbreviation theory which is stated by three experts Schendl (2001), Weakly (2006), Andrew (2007). According to them, there are 6 abbreviation types that are acronym (an abbreviation which comes from the combination of the initial letters of every word), contraction (an abbreviation which comes from the combination of the initial and suffix letters from one word), shortening word (an abbreviation which comes by eliminating suffix of one word), clipping word (an abbreviation which comes by eliminating some parts of initial or suffix of one word), initialism (an abbreviation which comes by taking the initial letter of one word), blend (an abbreviation which comes by the result of 2 abbreviations combined). The result of this research shows that there are 6 types of abbreviation on KOMPAS.com especially at technology section: acronym (23%), contraction (2%), shortening word (2%), clipping word (2%), initialism (70%), blend (1%). So, it can be concluded that intialism is the most dominated abbreviation type on KOMPAS.com especially at the technology section, while another dominated abbreviation type found even it is less from 25% is acronym. While the most rarely found abbreviation types on this website are contraction, shortening, clipping word and blend.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of the novel Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017) by Jesmyn Ward. The purpose of this study is to reveal the issue of surviving child abuse in the novel Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017) by Jesmyn Ward. The issue of surviving from child abuse refers to the type of abuse experienced by the character, the impact of the abuse on the character, and the character's efforts to overcome the abuse. This study uses the concept of life instinct by Sigmund Freud. This study uses the text and context contained in the novel. As a result, the character can go through his difficult time and can rise from the abuse he experienced.

Abstract

The aim of this study to find out how far Sherman Alexie’s novel The Absolutely True Diary of a-Part Time Indian (2007) bring ups and reveals the issue of life transformation which is done by the main character in this novel. It is intended also to find out how the fictional devices; plot (conflict) and setting in the novel give contribution in showing the meaning of life transformation. The result shows that the novel has  represented the Indian’s life by portraying Indian as a poor, an alcoholic, and unwell educated tribe. The writer also finds out another positive side of Indian through the main character who showed in the novel. The common stereotype of Indian is not reflected by an Indian teenager who bring a hope for the future of Indian.

Abstract

Language is always changed by the time that affected human life and vice versa. This research belonged to the descriptive qualitative research to find out lexical change and their factors that occur in Andaleh-Sabu sub-dialect. Based on data analysis and discussion found 243 words which are almost dead since the young generation does not understand at all with the words, while the old generation still uses this word for daily communications. Afterward, the data were classified into three stages of lexical change, semi-lexical change, lexical shift. There were 84 words as the result of lexical change which are divided into 52 nouns, 12 verbs, 17 adjectives, and 3 adverbs. Furthermore, there were 74 words classified as semi lexical change which were refused by the young generation. This phenomenon occurs due to several factors such as the emergence of the Indonesian language, globalization, migration, intermarriage, and decreasing number of the old generation.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out types of address terms based on kinship system and the differences of address terms based on culture and value based on kinship system of Malay found in Kabupaten Sarolangun Jambi. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The object of these research are17 participants with 55 recorded conversations.  The data gather by interview and recording of the source conversation. These data were gather and transcript as the instrument to be analyzed about address terms found in Kabupaten Sarolangun. The research data were gained in the form of interpretations of participant recorded conversations and interviews. Based on data analysis, it was found that in Kabupaten Sarolangun, people use address in everyday life such as in conversation, meeting, letter, messages. Most people address their friends and their families  are differently from those they do not know so well, and from those who are in a superior relationship to them such as the school or the boos at work. The type of address found in Kabupaten Sarolangun are : Title and Last Name (TLN), First Name (FN), Title only (T), Last Name (Last Name), Special Nickname, (SN) Special Name, and Kinship Term (KT).  It also found that people in Kabupaten Sarolangu Jambi have different kinds of address based on culture ad value. Furthermore, Each of address and the difference of the usage of address in Kabupaten Sarolanun bring   the relation between the speaker and the listener.

Abstract

This research is aimed in finding the types of code-switching used by Jang Hansol on Korea Reomit youtube channel. The data for this study are utterences used by Jang Hansol within his conversation from seven videos uploaded in Korea Reomit youtube channel. Romaine’s (1995) theory is applied in this research. The result of this study shows that the emergence of Inter-sentential between Indonesian to English was the most common type of code switching. This research gives the contribution in sociolinguistics fields. It is because the result of this study shows the relation of language and society. The used of code-switching by Hansol as the speaker in the conversation shows the relationship between him and the participants. So, It influenced the speaker’s choice of language in the conversation.

Abstract

This research analyzed the form and meaning of derivational affixes in the headline articles of Jakarta Post Newspaper. The form of derivational affixes is analyzed by morphological perspective and the meaning of derivational affixes is analyzed by using Leech′s (1974). The researcher used descriptive research method. The data in this research is five texts found in Jakarta Post Newspaper. The newspaper was downloaded from internet. The result of the study found that there are 70 words and 89 meaning of the derivational process that found in Jakarta Post Newspaper.

Abstract

Language style is very important to learn to understand a literary work, because everyone has a different language style. The purpose of this study is to determine the type of language style used by Lewis and the social factors that influence the style of language in the novel. The researcher applies a sociolinguistic approach using Martin Joos' theory which divides five language styles, namely frozen style, formal style, consultative style, relaxed style, and familiar style. In this thesis, qualitative method is used to analyze the problem. The researcher found 46 data of the language style, they are frozen style 8 (17.4%), formal style data 8 (17.4%), consultative style data 9 (19.5%), casual style 17 data (37%), and intimate style 4 (8.7%). The findings also show that there were 52 data from social factors that influence the use of language styles, they are participants 20 (39%), setting 2 (4%), topic 22 (41%), and function 8 (16%). In this study, the most dominant style of language is the casual style, while the social factor that most influences the use of language style in this novel is the topic.
