Abstract

This study analyses the dynamics of never-married women aged 30 years and above in India over three periods: 2005-06, 2015-16 and 2019-21 based on different socio-demographic dimensions. It analyses never-married women in India and uses data from three rounds of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS). The analysis examines different variables of interest such as rural-urban differences, educational attainment, types of occupation and wealth index followed by religion and caste. The results are nuanced and capture the intricacies of broad national trends and regional dynamics. Of course, such an overarching trend masks wide regional variation. On one hand, it is the states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim etc., where there has been prevalence of this trend showing an upward trend that marriage patterns are on change. On the other hand, states like Haryana and Bihar are showing a steady decrease which speaks about the effect of regional cultural dynamics. Moreover, the fluctuations in states like Meghalaya, and Assam reaffirm how multi-parameter is determining marital choices. The binary logistic regression used in the study analyses the effect of place of residence, education, occupation, wealth index, religion and caste on women’s chances to remain unmarried. The regression analysis demonstrates the distinct influences of these factors on marital status and yet they still only tell part of the story about an understudied subgroup, never-married women.

Abstract

This study investigates the decision-making processes of upper-middle-class families in Jakarta, Indonesia, when choosing elder care facility (Panti Werdha) for their elderly parents. Utilizing the Rational Choice perspective, the research examines how these families navigate cultural and religious values while considering individual preferences and family dynamics. This qualitative case study explores the experiences of three families consisting of upper-middleclass families who have entrusted the care of their elderly relatives to Panti Werdha. It analyzes the negotiation stages among family members, particularly between children and their elderly parents. The study seeks to understand how these families balance material and moral considerations while adhering to societal norms, ultimately questioning whether their choices are truly rational. It reveals that the decision-making process is a complex negotiation involving rational choices, weighing material and moral benefits, and ultimately driven by the desire to minimize burdens and ensure the elderly's autonomy and well-being. The study identifies a shift in values among these families, suggesting that traditional models of family care are evolving, with nursing homes becoming a more acceptable option for the elderly and their families.

Abstract

This article examines how young Chinese Indonesians interpret and engage with representations in comedy performed by Chinese Indonesian comedians. Using a poststructuralist framework, the article argues that ethnic identity is contingent, shaped by shared relational experiences with the majority, rather than by fixed essential traits, reflecting what Laclau and Mouffe have termed a "regularity in dispersion". Data was collected through a focus group discussion with twelve participants, where they were presented with a preselected set of six video clips containing comedic performances. Two intertwining themes based on the participants' responses to the videos were developed using reflexive thematic analysis: 1) diverging perspectives from the comedians' reductive, stereotypical and homogenizing representations of Chinese Indonesians and 2) converging perspectives on the jokes centered on boundary-maintaining social dynamics between the majority and themselves, such as discrimination and practices of endogamy. These themes present the contingent nature of ethnic identity as primarily shaped by relational social factors instead of determined by inherent traits. This research brings to the forefront the importance of examining the contextual and relational construction of ethnicity.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how families understand and organize their work in agriculture in the midst of modern production challenges and changing agricultural practices, specifically in Madura, Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative research methodology with a phenomenological approach. This study analyzes the responses of informants to understand the lived experiences of farming families. Using the theory of symbolic interactionism, this research shows how farmers negotiate their work and family roles through the active construction and prioritization of shared meanings related to togetherness. These principles include a) a simple way of thinking, b) owning a traditional small farm, and c) not being primarily market oriented. Farmers foster a sense of work-related togetherness by forming strong family ties, resulting in a division of labor and wages based on family relationships. In the Madurese context, traditional agricultural practices are not only a means of livelihood, but also an integral part of the family's cultural identity and social structure. The findings of this study underscore the crucial role of shared meanings related to togetherness and family solidarity in sustaining traditional agriculture in the modern era. It also provides insights into the importance of family cohesion as a fundamental element of the resilience of traditional agricultural practices in Madura, Indonesia.

Abstract

This research examines Balee Inong’s objectives as a women’s struggle community in Banda Aceh City towards increasing the role of women in the public sector. Although Balee Inong has empowered women in Banda Aceh City, one community, to fight for women’s rights, Balee Inong has not shown significant results in involving most women actively engaged in public spaces and decision-making subjects. This study uses a qualitative case study approach to analyze the roles and challenges of Balee Inong, which focuses on empowerment and work programs in Balee Inong. The study findings indicate that Balee Inong’s role has not yet been maximized due to several factors related to women’s political identity awareness, social construction, and patriarchal culture. These obstacles hinder women’s more significant role in the public sphere. This study concludes that although Balee Inong in Banda Aceh City provides opportunities for increasing women’s participation, it has not had a substantial impact on reaching all women in Banda Aceh City. The limitation of this study is that it has not fully reached women in Banda Aceh City who represent Balee Inong because of different perspectives and not yet significantly represented. This study highlights the need for more realistic efforts through comprehensive empowerment to distribute the understanding and goals of Balee Inong in the public domain.

Abstract

This study analyzed the impact of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between Dole Philippines, Inc. and the Labor Employees Association of Dolefil Polomolok Hourlies (LEAD.PH) in South Cotabato, Southern Philippines on the development of workers' capabilities. It used Martha Nussbaum's Capability Approach (CA) framework. It examined how CA enhances employees' capabilities and functioning through economic security, health, education, and work-life balance. A mixed-methods approach was used, analyzing the 2020-2025 CBA and a phenomenological exploration of union members' lived experiences through semi-structured interviews. The results show that the CBA significantly improves health and work-life balance through benefits such as health care and leave entitlements. However, challenges remain in terms of economic stability, access to technical training, professional development opportunities, and wage structures that may not fully meet the evolving needs of the workforce. These constraints can affect workers' agency and their ability to enjoy the life they value. Despite these challenges, the study highlights the importance of incorporating comprehensive development into CBAs, addressing both the personal and professional needs of workers. This study underscores the need for CBAs to prioritize employees' well-being and skills development to ensure they have the opportunity to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Abstract

This study examines the persistence of death rituals in Cirebon amid the pressures of modernity, focusing on how these practices continue to hold deep social and spiritual significance within the community. The research explores how changing values and economic challenges, particularly concerning food preparation and distribution during post-funeral events such as tahlilan and slametan, reflect tensions between religious teachings that discourage wastefulness and local beliefs surrounding purity and respect for the deceased. Employing a qualitative case study design, fieldwork was conducted in Trusmi Village, Cirebon, through in-depth interviews and participant observation involving ritual custodians (kuncen), family members, community leaders, and elders. Data were analyzed thematically via Blumer’s social action theory to interpret how symbols, social meanings, and modernization interact in shaping ritual practices. Findings reveal that while death rituals maintain their function as expressions of religiosity and social solidarity, modern consumerist tendencies have transformed certain practices into displays of prestige, often leading to food waste. The study calls for cultural adaptation and education to align these traditions with Islamic principles of moderation (wasatiyyah) and sustainability, reducing waste while reaffirming the rituals’ essence as expressions of piety, compassion, and solidarity, ensuring they remain spiritually meaningful and socially relevant in Cirebon society.
