Abstract

This research was motivated by the delivery of criticism towards the government which is considered less polite by some circles. The purpose of this study is to explain the politeness in the language of RG political observers when criticizing the government. This type of research is qualitative research. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The main instrument is the researcher himself. The data of this research is in the form of speeches by political observers of the RG which contain criticism of the government. The data source for this research is the RG YouTube channel. The data collection technique used is the observation and note taking technique. The data validation technique used in this study is triangulation. Technical data analysis is carried out by analyzing data according to the theoretical studies used to answer research questions that have been formulated. The research results show that. First, GM political observers in criticizing the government tend to use speech acts of direct criticism, although they sometimes use indirect criticism. Second, in criticizing RG, the dominant uses the maxim of praise, then agreement, and wisdom. However, RG tends to violate the politeness principles, especially the maxims of praise. This is because the criticism given tends to be direct without paying attention to the face of the speech partner or being criticized by RG.

Abstract

The animated film Encanto, which told the narrative of a magical Colombian family, introduced a new paradigm in the representation of women in the film industry. The unconventional female characters in this Disney-produced picture drew public notice and helped it win Academy Awards.  The multiple feminisms represented by these female figures are investigated descriptively and qualitatively. Data were gathered by watching the sequences of Encanto's film and paying attention to how feminism is depicted; taking pictures of each scene that depicts feminism; and then inventorying the acquired data. The data was evaluated and classified according to the feminism depicted in the scenes and discussions using John Fiske's semiotic theory. Existentialist Feminism, Postmodern Feminism, Psychoanalytic Feminism, and Ecofeminism Feminism were discovered to be the feminism streams portrayed in Encanto's animated films. These diverse streams of feminism are a breath of fresh air, breaking the preconceptions of female protagonists in prior Disney animated films.

Abstract

Despite various efforts to enhance reading comprehension, a preliminary study revealed that tenth-grade students at Pekanbaru's State Islamic Senior High School faced challenges comprehending narrative texts. This quasi-experimental study aimed to determine whether Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) instruction could improve students' narrative text comprehension. A total of 202 students were randomly assigned to two groups: a control group receiving traditional instruction and an experimental group receiving CSR instruction. Pre- and post-tests were administered to both groups to assess their comprehension abilities. Data analysis using SPSS version 20 revealed a significant difference between the two groups, indicating that CSR instruction effectively enhanced narrative text comprehension. The effect size, however, was relatively weak (η² = 0.111). These findings suggest that incorporating CSR into English language instruction can positively impact students' comprehension of narrative texts, even though the effect size is relatively small. Future research is needed to further investigate the effectiveness of CSR in enhancing reading comprehension across different genres and grade levels.

Abstract

This research takes two advertisements for Maybelline Green Edition beauty products as the objects of analysis, as Maybelline is a globally recognized cosmetic brand. The product emphasizes an environmentally friendly label, reflecting consumer awareness of environmental issues. Through a pragmatic approach, this research identifies illocutionary speech acts used in the ad slogans based on Searle's theory of illocutionary speech act identification, namely assertive, commissive, directive, and declarative illocutions. Using a qualitative method, primary data is obtained from words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in the slogans of Maybelline Green Edition beauty product ads. The research shows that assertive illocution is the main strategy in influencing consumers of this product. The analysis results indicate that assertive illocutionary speech acts dominate both posters, with a focus on directly delivering product information. This research provides a profound understanding of the types of illocutionary speech acts used in Maybelline Green Edition beauty product ads, with findings that can serve as a reference for marketing practitioners to enhance the effectiveness of beauty product advertisements in an increasingly environmentally conscious market. Therefore, understanding illocutionary speech acts can form the foundation for more effective and relevant marketing strategies in the cosmetic industry.

Abstract

This research examines social reflection in the novel Bergolak: Derita Anak Negeri by Armini Arbain and Ronidin, focusing on the forms and motives of youth participation in the PRRI events (1958-1961). The descriptive qualitative method and the Sociology of Literature approach are used to analyze the text of the novel. Data were analyzed by data reduction, classification of forms and motives of participation, and review of social reality with Ningrum's theory. The results showed that the youth and students, represented by Bahar, Sarman, and Karman, joined PRRI for various reasons. Their forms of participation included becoming spies, soldiers, and guerrillas. This participation comes without coercion, and the motives vary between characters. The social reality depicted in the novel is in line with the PRRI events written in historical documents. In conclusion, the novel Bergolak: Derita Anak Negeri presents a strong social reflection of the PRRI event through the forms and motives of youth participation.

Abstract

This study examines the patterns of speech transfer in the YouTube series "SORE-Istri dari Masa Depan," produced by the Tropicana Slim channel. The primary objective of this research is to comprehensively identify and describe the diverse modalities of speech transfer embedded within the series' dialogues. A qualitative-descriptive approach incorporating non-involved observation technique for data collection was employed. The analyzed data comprised conversation exchanges between characters within the series. Speech transfer analysis was guided by the theoretical framework of acquiring, stealing, seizing, creating, and continuing. The findings revealed the presence of all five speech transfer patterns, excluding the replacing speech pattern. This discovery significantly contributes to the understanding of the variation of speech transfer patterns in the context of serial dialog, with potential implications for linguistic and popular culture studies.

Abstract

Tokopedia, as one of the leading e-commerce platforms in Indonesia, presents a variety of products with interesting descriptions. This research analyzes the phenomenon of code-mixing in Tokopedia product descriptions, especially in the footwear and clothing categories. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of code mix used, and understand the underlying factors. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling technique. Data were collected from 25 product descriptions uploaded between August 22, 2022 and September 12, 2022. Data analysis refers to the theory of code-mixing from Musyken (2005) and the causal factors according to Hoffman (2017). The results show that there are three types of code-mixing, namely insertion, alteration, and congruent lexicalization. The underlying factors include topic need, lexical, group identity, and emphasis. This research contributes to the understanding of the use of code-mixing in the Indonesian e-commerce context, and opens up opportunities for further research related to its implications for consumer behavior and online marketing strategies.

Abstract

Javanese politeness theory and language learning lack comprehensive understanding of politeness principles in ordering speech acts outside Java island. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing politeness strategies used by Javanese parents in Kenagarian Sungai Duo when giving orders to their children. Employing a mixed-methods approach with qualitative and descriptive statistics, the research uncovered six politeness principles employed in parents' speech: generosity, humility, sympathy, wisdom, praise, and agreement. Notably, parents prioritize generosity (16.66%) and other strategies to soften their commands, creating a highly polite communication environment (97% compliance). These findings suggest a nuanced understanding of parent-child dynamics and Javanese politeness beyond the island's borders, opening doors for further investigation into regional variations and their impact on family communication.

Abstract

Language politeness is the key to good communication, including in communication in student WhatsApp groups. However, violations of the principle of language politeness often occur among students, especially in WhatsApp course groups. This study aims to discuss violations of the principle of language politeness among students in Indonesian language course class groups. This study uses a qualitative method with research data in the form of WhatsApp message media. The results showed that there were four violations of the maxim of wisdom, one violation of the maxim of sympathy, five violations of the maxim of generosity, and one violation of the maxim of humility. These violations occur because students think that WhatsApp groups tend to be informal and pay less attention to language politeness. The results of this study are expected to increase students' awareness of the importance of language politeness in communication, especially in WhatsApp groups.
